  1. Hi, Caveman - checked pedal, all looked ok. Tried reverse bleeding - filled up quickly but couldn't any resistance at the pedal. Bled it normally, that gave resistance at the pedal but still not as much as it used to have. Really need it sorted by weekend. Called AA. Bloke diagnosed a collapsed diaphragm - would explain the lighter pedal and the no gears. Gave up and had it taken to a local garage for a new clutch, Wow, 3 years doesn't seem v long for a clutch to last. Anyway, thank you all for your help, bye for now
  2. Hi, I'm hoping someone can offer some advice on a discovery 1, 300tdi, clutch problem. Was approaching lights, go to stop, brakes, dip clutch - won't come out of gear. Comes out as slow down. Then won't go back in. Lots of crunchy noises. Limp home. Had a new clutch 3 years ago, new heavy duty fork, new slave cylinder. Can't see any leaks. suspect master cylinder. swap it for a new one. Bleed hydraulics. Got some pedal resistance but doesn't feel like as much as there was before (was really heavy). By passed the clutch damper, took the slave cylinder out (looked fine, not wet under the dust cap, piston moves smoothly) put it back together, bled it and nothing has changed (although there's a new noise come from somewhere!) With the slave cylinder off the rod was sticking out of the housing an inch or so. It feels like it's attached at the other end. It moves in and out smoothly. When it's pushed in as far as I can get it with my thumb, there's sound like something metal making contact with something else metal. Can't push it any further than that by hand. I suspect this is going to sound daft, but it doesn't feel like it's broken (does't scrape, it's not notchy, reluctant, unhappy?) Not convinced that the clutch pedal feels as heavy as it used to. On the bleeding front: two of us, one pressing the pedal, the other opening and closing the bleed nipple while the pedal is being held down. Repeated that until there were no more bubbles. What am I doing wrong? Any advice gratefully received. Need it sorted sharpish for work
  3. Gents, thank you for all the replies. Sorry the picture wasn't the best. NigelW - yes, it looks just like yours. I'll copy your method and take a bit of floor out to get to it. Disaster averted. Thanks again.
  4. Hi - please can you help? Took advantage of a bit of early autumn sunshine to finally get some underseal on the discovery. Happily painting away between sips of tea when the brush...went through the chassis. Hole is on driver's side, just forward of the rear wheels, there's a tubular cross member that connects the two chassis rails, each end is attached to a plate that is then boxed in to the top of the chassis rail by a sloping piece of plate. That sloping piece of plate is mostly gone and so is the top of the chassis rail.) To my naive eyes this looks really (REALLY) bad. Can anybody tell me just how catastrophic it is? Is this going to fail MOT in a big way? Is it save-able? I'd be struggling if it had to go. Picture attached Thanks in advance for any advice can offer.
  5. Gents, Hi. Been having trouble starting disco in the cold weather. Put some new glow plugs in. Three swapped no worries. Fourth will turn but won't come out and won't retighten either. It will wobble in the hole but won't move in or out. Thoughts? Thread gone on the head? Thread gone on the plug? But then why won't it pull out? Any suggestions on what I've managed to do and how I might get the stupid thing to work again would be much appreciated. Thanks
