  1. Business as usual, 24 hours in few areas with gps points. Points "scored" with digital camera. Had great fun, we finished 11/24 in Modified class. We took too many breaks (grilled sausage and drank coffee ) and towed few suzukis too Atleast we won "fair play" award, somekind of toolset I heard. (we left before prize ceremony) Pictures here, post #141 onwards. http://forums.offipalsta.com/showthread.php?t=55516 lr4x4 doesn't allow dynamic pages in -tags, so I can't link pictures from there. Few direct links to pictures: http://koti.mbnet.fi/t-5/kuvat/Luumaki/ http://forums.offipalsta.com/album.php?albumid=1431 http://www.ruijanpallas.com/moottoriurheil..._Bonehill_2009/ Results: http://kayttaja.1g.fi/Suunnistus%20cupin%2...onehill%202009/
  2. "Lost In Frost" 2005, I was codriver in original daihatsu rocky. Our racer at front. Stock daihatsu rocky 2.8TD with stock studded tires, only accessory was toyota pto winch. At the back is Margus Peets with UniJeebik, proto-class We drove ~200km to the race, then 24hours of racing and back home. Few times we winched downhill because there were so much snow First and only podium place, there were only 3 participants in original class and we came second
  3. Two popular manufacturers http://wup.defa.com/en/wup_products_preheaters.html http://www.calix.se/consumer/index.asp?lang=UK That genuine block heater in roverparts.com looks like a toy.. Heater element costs 50-80eur, installation kit 20-40eur and wiring 40-50eur. Wiring for inside heater 50-70eur. Installation is something else, than just "Simply pop out a freeze plug and insert the coil permanently in its place." Webasto/eberspächer ~1000eur + 250-400eur installation. Atleast in nordic countries some diesel cars have webasto/eberspächer installed in factory or by importer. Modern diesel engine just doesn't generate enough heat without extra heater for car to warm up. So everytime when temperature goes below +5C (?), webasto runs when engine is running. I had clock switch and remote control installed afterwards and I love that remote control
  4. Webasto/eberspacher have their problems, and you don't want to wait spare parts when it's -25 season Electric block/coolant heaters are 100% reliable, atleast when you have something to connect to. Get electric heater first for reliability, then add fuel-powered heater for extra comfort.
  5. Two years ago in Lost in Frost 24h trophy competition I remember it was -24C in the night and -20C during the day. I smashed drivers door in the beginning and it didn't open, so i climbed through window for the rest of competion. I really hurt every time I forgot to wear gloves and touched something metal We went for a warm cup of coffee in the middle of competition, and it was most painful thing to come back to outside after that! Our friends 3.3 diesel nissan patrol had its glowplug relay jammed in the night before competion, so all six glowplugs broke. After over an hour of heating with gas torch and one can of aerostart it finally started. At first it only ran when aerostart was burning in intake manifold and engine sucked that flame I really thought they would break the engine, but it's still running great! Our volvo fl7 truck didn't even promise to start when were to go home, fortunately one friend had big alternator and batteries in his 24v C303 volvo, so we managed to start our truck. It wasn't that much fun then, but afterwards I can only think it was great experience. Next Lost in Frost is in the beginning of march, so welcome to Finland
  6. American way of doing stuff: Get miscellanious pictures, invent a story and give directions for building a road in a terrain you have never seen.
  7. I understand that 50/50 mixture is best against freezing? No point to add more antifreeze? I have heard from people who have used non-studded M/S tires (which came under imported cars) that they are no good in real winter conditions. So there really is difference between M/S tires and winter tires! Here in Finland you have to have winter tires at least in december to february, meaning at least M/S markings and 3mm tread depht. Almost everyone has two sets of wheel, and I guess more than half have studded tires.
  8. I'm going to try more next year, only 1 comp & 1 playday this year Goal is to participate in all trophies in Finland. Fall seems to be quite busy, but if nothing big is broken, why not. I think I need a better car to go to estonia, not to mention russia
  9. Hmm that sounds like a plan. I just need to speed up my post count so I can choose my new ride Business aside, are you going to compete in Finland next year?
  10. Maybe hydrobooster from chevrolet for brakes?
  11. This was quite scary. Fortunately bolts flew away just before I was going to test top speed on tarmac Those tires were new to me, first time on the road. And nobody checked if the beadlock bolts were tight. This time we had to use inner tube, because the tires were old and had suffered some damage. With tubeless you notice immediately if beadlock bolts are loose..
  12. And this is how we make things even more complicated in Finland. You have to pay annual tax, and that tax depends on your vehicle. Base-tax is 0,26eur/d or 0,35eur/d. If you use diesel, you pay 0,067eur/100kg/d extra. UNLESS you have for example van/pick-up or service car meaning 3 front seats only. Then you pay only 0,009eur/100kg/d extra. Examples: pre 1.1.1994 gasoline powered, gross weight max 3500kg: 365x0,26 = 94,90eur/year after 1.1.1994 gasoline, max 3500kg: 365x0,35 = 127,75eur/year after 1.1.1994 diesel, big 4x4 with rear seats, gross weight 3150kg: 365x(0,35+32x0,067) = 910,31eur/year after 1.1.1994 diesel, big 4x4 without rear seats, 3150kg: 365x(0,35+32x0,009) = 232,87eur/year Over 3500kg trucks don't have base-tax, annual tax depends on weight, amount of axles and type of a trailer hitch. 12 different figures and of course per 100kg per day. So, gasoline has cheapest tax. Small diesel cars are relatively cheap and so are all vans etc. with max 3 seats. Diesels with rear seats have big tax and of course tax increases with weight. Small trucks are cheaper and can have more seats, but they need speed limiter etc. So pick up your calculator and decide what you want Gasoline costs 1,169e/litre (95E), 1,199e/litre (98E) and diesel 1,039e/litre. Of course it's not that simple; 4x4s, campers, service cars, vans, pickups and trucks all have their limitations, depending about their import tax. Import tax can be lower, depending on age of the vehicle and construction And we have our own fuel, "heating oil". It's diesel with red colour. It's meant for heating houses etc. Then we have "heating oil for motors", it's also red diesel, meant for tractors in farm use, excavators, forestry machines etc. If you use heating oil in your car and get caught, you have to pay HUGE fines and taxes. There is a temptation, heating oil costs 0,6-0,9eur/litre Hope you find this interesting..
  13. It took me almost 2 years to write 10 posts (now 11), most of them in members vehicles forum, in my rangie topic If mvf would have been "secret" two years ago, I think I would not register or post anything.. Don't know if that is a good or a bad thing? Don't be afraid, it's too difficult for me to steal your cars and deliver them here (Finland)
