  1. Hi - I need to replace the front door support pillars on my 90. Welding not my scene so can anyone recommend anyone in the East Sussex (Uckfield) area ? I know the pillars and brackets are about £45 but also anyone got any experience of costs for the labour part (I am respraying her soon so not worried about that) ? Ive read through the forums and dont fancy trying it myself but took heed of the need to get someone who knows what they are doing if I am ever to have doors that hang straight again !! cheers.
  2. ok so fitting new springs solved the problem of the shoes rubbing so thankyou one and all. But now I note that if I jack the back wheel up and spin it forwards it rotates perfectly, if however I try spinning it backward it goes about a turn then gets really stiff i.e. it needs all my lardy bodyweight to turn it even slightly. Push it forward and it frees up again ! Its not the brakes as ive tried it without any shoes in and it still locks up. Any ideas, should it do that ?
  3. Western - the 'brakes again' thread refers to a drum unit with a snail adjuster for both shoes, mine only has an adjuster for the front shoe and the springs are also different ?
  4. thanks folks - ive ordered some new springs so hopefully that will do the trick. The drums I got were Britpart and were actually a good fit so no probs their. not a Landie question but how do you change your signature settings on thsi forum as when I go into edit profile there is nothing shown for signayure or location etc ???? probably me being thick !
  5. yes its all running freely as I stripped and cleaned it all - ive re used the old spring so maybe its past its best. I will try new springs as that wont break the bank.
  6. Restoring my first Landie !! 1989 Def90

  7. I have a Def 90 (1989) with Rover rear diff and what I believe are standard rear drum brakes which I am renovating. Ive just replaced the pistons, shoes and drum as the originals were completely shot but ive hit a problem. The unit only has one snail adjuster for the forward facing shoe and no whole for another so its not just missing. The bottom spring runs shoe to shoe and the top one runs front shoe to rear stud but nothing on the top of the rear shoe to pull the shoe in. Subsequently the rear shoe is resting out on the drum and rubbing. Ive tried putting top spring from shoe to shoe but that mucks up teh piston. Any ideas anyone please ! thanks DJ
  8. I have just completed replacing the knackered disco 200tdi that was in my Defender 90 (no oil pressure) with a newly rebuilt disco 200tdi lump. All gone in great and she fired up just fine and for a week has been running brilliantly, then yesterday she was a cow to start and when she did wouldnt rev for about twenty seconds and exactly the same again today. Ive checked all the intercooler pipes all ok, new glow plugs (and yes I did the hold ignition for ten seconds bit), drained and primed fuel filter etc. Once she is started and allowed to tick over for 10-20 seconds she revs great ! When she is warm she starts and runs perfectly. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. The only thing ive done in the last week was add a turbo gauge and I have checked all the pipes are fine - although forums suggest that these wont effect reving and starting.
  9. many thanks - really appreciate the advice. Just lost all my oil pressure so will be swapping the engine for one ive rebuilt so a great opportunity to sort the transfer box too !
  10. is there a specific part number or model number I should be looking for in a Disco 1.2 transfer box ?
  11. dont know what was in it before I assume it was a standard 2.5d Defender lump though.
  12. I have a 1989 Defender 90 which has a Disco 200tdi lump connected to the original Def gearbox and transfer box. I can only get 55/60 out of her before she is screaming and a local mechanic recommended fitting a disco gearbox and transfer box. Ive waded through the forums and there seem to be conflicting stories / advice over what needs to be done. I am no mechanic just an enthusiastic amateur wanting to learn. So in simple terms should I buy a disco gbox and tbox and if so can I assume these will fit straight onto my current engine and bellhousing ? or do I just buy the disco transfer box and will that fit straight onto my currrent def gearbox. The engine side is sorted i.e. the disco engine is already in so dont need the guidance on that part. Please someone give me simple answers or point me to where I can find them as my poor small brain is fried from wading through forums and working out the conflicting guidance! Thanks.
