  1. Ok great to know, I can add that hazard light in then. I haven't got a timer relay with the glow plugs, it was originally powered off the ignition key but i moved it to a normal relay as it had melted the wiring to the key. I am currently feeding both the relay coil trigger and the warning light off the same feed (12V from a toggle switch), and this means the warning light is on constantly except for when the glow plug relay is triggered. Therefore I guess I need to switch the earth instead for the glow plug light. I'll give it a go using the relay and see what happens. Thanks Ralph for the pictures.
  2. Hi all, I have just finished retrofitting a new Raptor binnacle and td5 warning light set into a 1986 2.5NA (I know old but....), all looking snazzy however there is a slight problem. When the ignition is on the glow plug warning light comes on with the oil pressure and charge lamp. This is when the plugs are off then when I switch the plugs on the light goes out. Now i know that the light is earth switched and i assume that is the problem, unlike the simple warning lights from the 2.5NA this is a bit more involved. I was thinking to use a relay to earth switch the light, i have some v.small Schneider Electric relays that do both NO and NC, i think these will do the job. Will this work? And if it does/doesn't is there a better way of dealing with this? As an aside, what happens when a TD5 puts hazards on? does just the hazard lamp come on? or the other menagerie of lights (both L & R indicators and trailer light)? if they all come on then i will use the same small relays to make up an AND set up to power the hazard lamp. FYI: starter, fuel cut off, ign switcher power, glow etc is all on a starter switch panel, hazard light switch is a contura II switch in a dash console. Ollie
  3. I understand that fitting a complete axle is easier but seeing as I can get a 300tdi casing and I can supply the parts for little money the actual fitting is also not a problem. Just simply wondering regards to compatability. Does the 300tdi disco case have the caliper mounts that I need to fit defender 90 rear calipers
  4. I understand that the complete axles themselves would swap easily yet may also be different regarding PCD etc however it is only the axle casings that i can get a hold of. I was thinking that i could take the axle casing from a 300tdi disco 1, fit it with my diff from my current axle. add the correct hubs, stub axles, flanges, calipers, rotors etc and then fit it. Reason for buying casing only is i can get it for £40. After more thought i will fit new 90 calipers all round, 2 pot rear, 4 pot front (standard) with vented front brakes. Will i be needing a beefier master cylinder to deal with newer brakes?
  5. Another thought is that as i will eventually when money and time permits be doing an engine swap, so perhaps uprating the brakes now isn't a bad idea, and for that i suppose 110 calipers front and rear with vented front rotors and 110 rear rotors. don't know if I'll need to change the master cylinder or not. any thoughts would be great.
  6. Looking a bit further, would it be possible to use one of the casings mentioned, fit parts from my current rear axle and then replace others with parts listed below: 90 Rear Calipers and Discs 300Tdi stub axles 300Tdi hubs heavy duty terrafirma drive flanges 300Tdi half-shafts. ? The caliper brackets
  7. Hi All, I am currently able to get hold of either a TD5 discovery axle casing or a discovery 1 200tdi casing. I want to change the drums on my 1986 defender for discs and was wondering which of these axle casing will let me do that. Can I just swap the internals over and maybe new hubs and calipers etc. will just different axle casings be enough? Couldn't find a definitive answer online yet. Thanks
  8. Brilliant help guys, thanks for such speedy useful replies!!!
  9. Hi, I am due to fit some stronger lamps and upgrade generally the headlamps in my 1986 90, however i have realised that aside from the loom being bloody old the new lamps are more powerful and i would like to fit some relays, one for dipped and one for main beam. i am fairly competent with electrics but relays are a new area so could i get some advice on how to wire them etc. With my current understanding i think i need to wire the 12V feed (blue & white for dipped) and the headlight output into the switched circuit (30 & 87 on diagram)but what do i feed to the switch circuit? (85 & 86) i would like to retain the current fuses and i will try to mount the relays close to the fuse box. a circuit diagram would be awesome, any advice is also appreciated thanks
