  1. I was unable to and it's not just this site others are having the same problem. Could I suggest something, we (or I) run a forum and often have connection problems we also have a blogspot and let people know when they register. Then if a problem just post a bit telling people whats the problem. Keeps people informed and don't lose goodwill.
  2. found this blog again for makeing boxes, i use them for storage of nuts and bolts http://juiceboxstorage.blogspot.com/ Its from waste cardboard, made a metal template, just make them now when needed, takes me only 30 secs.
  3. I use a SDS cheapo one purchased from aldi couple of years back for about ~£20 use blacksmith drills for getting though thick plates about 6mm, set does up to 1 inch holes drill a pilot hole first using 6mm drill Yes i know about when the drill jams while breaking though, i use a bar over the handle to get proper grip nor will i hold the speed on lock
  4. Both this house and my last had inspection pits, very usefull and saves the back, most points covered already but i would certainly recommend drainage if needed, concrete sides, use replaceable concrete slabs as a base with a kind of ditch underneath. Current one is 18 feet in length, concrete with spencer steel reinforcement, white wash sides, ladder access both ends, concreate slabs with a drainage ditch running whole lenght underneath, this so possible to power wash from inside, portable light fitting, 1 metre wide. Over the years had problems with the boards, used to use railway sleepers but they are heavy, now use 18mm ply with strenghtling beams underneath. Oil spils are the worse hence the replaceable slabs the floor does get very dirty with time, also keep a supply of sand to mop up spils quickly, the smell can be overpowering. Don't go down with engines running, watch out for fuel leaks If you do make it get a digger and a big skip plus plenty of shoreing wood to support the sides
  5. purchased a set of stepper drills last time, brill they are for large holes in thn sheets might get another set at that price plus the weld rods, hammer set.
  6. excellent posts, over the years done a fair bit of drilling, in the end plain HSS bits seem to work the best, with the right drill corrctlty sharpened I've a copy of one of those pre war (2nd) engineering books, well 3 volumes. there is 3 chapters on drilling alone in pillar drills and a couple more on the lathe, and a whole chapter about how to sharpen one, plus how to make "flat" ones, would like to say the bit about sharping is correct. I use one of those Jigs up against a grineing wheel, plus a water wheel to keep some cool, get them sharp and the correct angle and almost any drill will do including some of the bench mounted hand ones. For accurate work or plastic they are about the best, but take time. I've made a few flats, mainly to remove spot welds, they are great but takes time and some skill to make them
  7. well that seem to be the general attiude of glass and others round our way, and yes you mostly likely have heard about the "spashy six". After taking videos of spashing thought a ford in wales (on the wet road site) and posting on youtube someone in the 4x4 commuity got "upset" and informed the Local Police, warning letters or some other ASBO warning was sent and one of the members of the group went to court having refused to accept a caution. It never got to court having gone though a "pre trail" review the CPS dropped the case, but it left a bitter feeling names got mentioned. Now it was not Glass, but people within it who used Glass name as a kind of crediablity in dealing with the authorities. In another incident a group i was with got stopped by a well know member one of these organsiations and questioned in a rude and threating manner as to how we got lots of mud on our vechicles. On the day in question it was out first meeting with anyone and quiet taken back by the attuide, no.plate details were taken and had the usally rant about off road driving. On the weekend we had camped at a local farm the farmer let us drive and play in certain areas, basically bog holes, he had also asked us to drive over moorland tracks, he owned to check some fenceing which might have been damaged in the recent storms, thats how we got the mud. No concern of these interfering townies.
  8. very strange, but generally true, i go out most weekends, often the whole weekend (camp the night) and been doing so since the NERC ban, on the whole meet nobody on often popular routes in Wales. Do keep a kind of log, and one can often name the persons i've meet this last 6 months and it's very few, more likely to meet the odd small group of laners than anyone else. Yes i do on occessions meet the odd rambler, but nearly always near the UCR of tarmac road they have parked. Do visit the odd "ale" house and speak to the staff/owners they say the same, very few people about. most country pubs now reliey on the "Sunday lunch trade", nor does the weather make much difference, on sunny days still dead, even the cross country main roads are quiet.
  9. if you mean artist's valley near Taly-y-bont on the west coast near machynlleth then your right, spent a whole week wild camping and doings as many lanes as we could both ways and certainly some of the best lanes in the country. I used to like the one which went over the pass to the next valley, high steep and no-body about, as said spent a whole week and never meet a sole, some lanes just took all day. When we got tired just stopped pitch up camp and stayed the night. Never meet anyone, farmer, rambler nothing apart from the trip to get supplies
  10. Interesting point, not a member of Glass or crag, but i do pass rupps now and again and the small little not so long ones have fallen into dis use by everyone. They were not popular with ramblers walkers as often remote unknown and little used if at all. In the years before the ban i meet nobody and i mean nobody, farmer, walker anyone. Many are still "open" no gates or notice and from what i can see no use whatso ever. Its a bit like the footpaths and odd rupp near me, spoke to the odd farmer and those working on the land and they are surprised to see me (still on the legal row), years ago they would think i was lost but now just wave. Speaking to one landowner recently he said he had not seen anyone on the footpaths for years, i notice this to, ramblers seem to stick to sunday afternoon organised walks starting from converinet car parks (often packed) do a few odd miles. Most seem to be there 50's & 60's bobble hat mob, rarely walk more than 2 miles, take in pub on way and circle route, avoid these (few are motor row) and you might never see one. Yes you might get a few locals (often holiday home owners) walking there dogs but they stick close to "home", as for meeting them on lanes very rare more likely meet you lot. So its such a shame, so many gone for what ?
  11. I meant on my last thread would be a nightmare vertical always getting mixed up
  12. I've used them for over 30 years and well worth the money there are different types and sizes metric imperial and if you can still get them whitworth, the whitworth ones even now seen to fit better than he others esp. on older vechicle. Undoing them i reckon is an art, once you hear the rust seal crack, use some wd 40 or peneration oil on the pipe close to he join, this avoids twisting the pipe as the union nut is undone hope this helps
  13. LOL mate, theres a fire, heres a extinguisher, pour on the oil
  14. if you read my other thread was used to keep together the seem in place were the wing "clamps" round the false A post The wing on 200tdi disco is in two parts, normally use a Door skinner tool to clamp but in this case too much distoration had occured Could use it as a filler on body repairs, deep cuts etc, but its very runny when liquid i'll try some hozzational welding but it might just run off. Cause could tip the car over on its side
  15. Looks just like the Alutight stuff in the other thread i started 2 threads on welding in one day, popular eh looks cheaper than the other glad i only brought 50 cm of the stuff still saved replaceing 3 radiators would cost me a lot more so saved a bob or too might not be the same but i will still try some
  16. Very well said serendipity, its what i carry now as a matter of course plus a sleeping bag even in summer it get cold up high at night. Its not just alone but i've come across, or gone to the reasue of a few groups, yea it happens, one gets stuck then the others trying to help him do, and then they all get stuck. If in a convoy then a golden rule is to make sure at least one truck can get home. As for moblies most places in wales have no signal, they do exist but again local knowledge can tell you were to get one, just moving over a brow of a hill and perfect signal. Again Wales is slightly different there are some long lanes and very very remote where the nearest homestead or working phone could be a good 3hour hike over rough ground. So don't forget a good pair of walking boots and water proofs in fact think like a well prepared rambler
  17. Ayone used Alutight for welding alumium Its expensive stuff but for small amounts well worth it, there was a Dutch bloke at billing selling the stuff @ £20 per meter, It uses a low heat then introduce the rod while still hot, then scratch (breakes the oxide layer) the joint and the stuff fills the joint. Its a strongish joint, idea for radaitor holes, but recently used it for keeping together a Aluminium seam on the front wing of a disco, the bit where the side posts join the "A" frame and the wing itself. There was slight distrotion, so the "a" post would not stay in, could of "MIG"ed it but the time and hassle of changing the wire put us off, also could us pop rivets but look awful on the out side Weather it will last only time will tell could post pics but still cannot get the photos to post (too big). As for the use takes a bit of practice but once the the layer breakes you scratch like mad to get good peneration, advantage also is less heat so paint layer less affected, can undo with heat, no safely gogs and all that, and no need for a mig welder and gas, just use a gas blow lamp, have welded extra tie down points on series tub. Since the price of gas gone though the roof and the ease which it seems to work, does anyone know where i can get more of this in the UK, got some left, but need to keep some in resever for raditor repairs, done 3 this year, and 1 heater matrix, it works and were pressure tested after.
  18. Some clubs tried it in the past but got into all kinds of problems As stated and i agree with most of the comments, local up to date knowledge is the best, but it needs to be up to date n even within seasons they change, what could be overgrown one week is cut back the next. hence why its differcult to grade, with newer shiner ones people perfer clear mountian moors, but even here gorse bushes can T-cut a side very well, they grow fast too. In north wales there is some good blog sites written and keep up to date shared among the commuity and not just a few in national clubs, at least some attempts to name the lanes as some have serveral names. Luckly in the area most are hard rock, open all year round and don't suffer the mud pluggers as much, very few go though bogs so getting stuck is less of a problem, your more likely to breakdown and been remote you take others along to help
  19. Well i considered it, and a few years ago would have gone without a though Instead went laning on some days, group mumbers were up and lots of groups out, consideing a bank holiday thats what i would expect But i was also invited to other things which clashed on the weekend, about 4 non advertiesd private events all within North east Wales where groups (some within clubs) rent a farm, cottage with land, whole small campsite or a quarry for the weekend. Could not stay with them all but did visit them, most went laning on the day but some where using the sites as private play day, mini motos everywhere, no rules, good family atomsphere all enjoying themselves. Meet a few ex trailers from the past all said the same and similar to whats been said, too many silly little rules, fun element has gone, too expensive, kids like it here cause allowed a bit of freedom, like the camp site fire atomsphere. Now i'am not knocking the ARC i've enjoyed it in the past and still have lots of friends who do it, but have noticed times are changing, one group I counted 22 vechicles asked how much told £5 camping for the whole weekend. Ask the campsite owners and there happy, they know them, coming for years, close the site to the general public and let them do what they want within reason.
  20. me, just the sound of bacon cooking, well the mig woking ok then
  21. Quite agree said it in the previous post which some how has got chopped. What i was geting at was i turn up in a bog standard slightly battered series 3 petrol with no mods, just the recovery point and spring, and get told cannot complete cause the bumper slightly bent and the standard seat belts are not good enough, argue the point and let me have a go but would'nt get any points. I assumed a RTV stood for Road Tax Vechicle, other comptetors where not bothered, but because i didn't have the right "gear" the organisers assumed i had no idea and was a risk to all concerned, cause offered a job as marshal. Then try other clubs within the ARC and find i'am ok, rules it seems are applied differently. As for bad behaviour we were asked by the organisers to stop recording the rant on video, but they allowed the rant to go !on.
  22. That happened to me which was fair enough really only wanted the experance and ****** the points, but some clubs not as willing its seems a bent bumper (Series front end bent up) which past an mot was considered and avantage so prevented from compteteing, so would you be prevented from finshing if you did it on a trail.
  23. Thats how i started basic landy, 2 recovery points and a return spring, recent MOT & insurance, then found did'nt have the right seat belts, the "wrong roll bar", the bumper was bent, my kid higher than me could sit with us cause of H&S, the floor did'nt have a rubber seal. the handbrake seal had a hole in, the springs looked old, too long travel on the brake and various other points. Got my money back but it ws a waste of a day, tired a few other ARC clubs and did a few trails but varoius problems over membership cards was the family covered or not etc, still after a few goes still could not get the truck to there varing standards, but i did get to have a go, often though it was a ploy to get marshalls as they were always short. Did a bit of marshalling but i'am not suited as a spector, family found the bad language, bad tempers of losing comptetiors, restrictions on photographs, restrictions on movement, lack of site information (ie where it is.) a complete pain in the a** Also found the booking rules not clear some required driving licence, different prices quoted, timing changed at last minute one club wanted me to do a tyro although i booked a RTV, camping restrictions, then finally found events canceled on 2 occasions, then started laning and never looked back.
  24. Hope this in the right section been looking for some time a new MIG welder as the price of gas from BOC has gone though the roof Wife came home with next weeks Aldi leafet, 130 AMP gasless welders £100 anyone with experance of "Gas less" use argon at present but costing ~ £150 pa (rental 2 bottles) would prefer 150 AMp but would anyone with 130AMP let us know how thick can you weld. (present one about 100 amps but its old)
  25. Just been out and measured me truck, seen the other thread, well it would not pass and i'am not going to bother to amend it. Its got a 4 " lift nice wide tyres and i like it, it does the job, got a winch too. So thanks to all those supid rules decided to give it a miss and organise something else, ther critics are right the ALRC are just destroying there own hobby, any one with an ordinary disco would not even risk some of the courses i've seen yet attempts to mininise damage is banned under the rules
