  1. Thank you everybody; that is all most helpful. Those vehicles that have DPFs ought then to present themselves for test before 19 May … and at least get a year's worth out of the system. Best, David
  2. Yes, it's me again. I understand that diesel vehicles with a factory build date after 2008 are required to be fitted with DPFs. So pre 2008 builds are presumably exempt from the visible smoke fail test. It would be nice to have an authoritative answer on this important issue.
  3. I have done a little research after posting this topic. It seems that vehicles fitted with DPFs will fail the MoT if they emit visible smoke. I infer therefore that older vehicles without DPFs will presumably get through as normal. Can anyone tell me when DPFs were fitted to our Defenders or 90s? My 1987 90 engine has been changed for one from a Disco 200tdi but I suspect that makes no difference.
  4. New rules from 20 May indicate that visible exhaust smoke means a fail. Anybody got up to date info on this topic which would appear to be designed to take the majority of older diesel vehicles off the road?
  5. It seems that more Land Rovers are being stolen than ever before, bundled off to some remote depot, stripped, containerised and exported. Other instances of them being used for ram raids, ripping ATMs out of alls etc are prevalent. What is the best security to prevent our vehicles being stolen? I understand that despite security devices of various types it only takes about 4 minutes to get in and drive off. Tracking devices are good but expensive (and only of use on motorways where cameras and other measures can detect them) And expensive at £700 or so.
  6. JUst to clarify my post above (AA insurance). It is for comprehensive cover. Good hunting folks.
  7. Hi. Insurance - just renewed mine. AA quoted £195 for the year for myself and wife as named drivers (max no claim discount) and with 4000 miles and business use. Mine is a 1987 "90" with a 200 tdi Disco engine (12L) which is declared. This quote was a lot higher than last year's so I challenged it and got it down to £175. I also asked Footman James (now Aon) to quote. They declined to quote as the car had been modified (the engine change). Good luck folks. Interestingly my Mercedes (E320 estate) insurance has reduced this year.
  8. Roof bars too high off the ground; the logs were HEAVY! Only driven on my land so no danger to shipping. This was about the 7th load. Going to be stacked on racks in the traditional manner for multiple chain-sawing in due course
  9. Gathering firewood for cutting. Note distance pieces for bonnet protection.
  10. Hi My wife and I have just returned from a week's break, staying in a B&B in a village the other side of Ghent and guess what we found in the woodshed! Enquiries of the owner revealed that he acquired it from a close neighbour who had fallen ill and whose wife wanted the space. The present owner has repaired it (parts on Internet from the UK) and has converted it to LPG (see gas bottle behind the front seats). Unfortunately I could not read the vehicle number on the dash (too faint/worn). Any ideas what year guys? 12. Thanks Les! I will give you a call during the week. Best wishes, David
  13. Thanks v much Western. LRM numbers are different to the ones you quote but are the same. LRM 047, 048, 049 and 050 seem to correspond to their 161, 162, 163 and 164. Onward and upward!
  14. Hi and thank you for the very prompt response. Very helpful suggestion. I will try and identify what I need and get it sorted. It is the long post/pillar to which the door hinges are fixed. Les Henson told me that I will need new bottom hinges too as these will be rusted solid to the post and will have to be cut off. Cheers!
  15. Hello. Having replaced the rusted front bumper and completely shot rear cross member on my 1987 "90" it is time to replace both door posts. Can anyone please advise me where I can obtain replacements and also what I should be looking for (eg part numbers)? Many thanks.
