  1. Ladies, Gents collective. Firstly, Big brother- If this is not allowed i am deeply sorry and feel free to move/ remove this post as appropriate. Now, Recently I gained a new project, 4.6 P38 of 1995 vintage. It was supposed to be a fun project that my son and I could enjoy prior to selling and moving to a new toy. Unfortunately, COVID happened and i am 'Bored' of the project. The engine now runs (fuel pump) and the vehicle moves under its own power. Sadly this means that the 4 height sensors and Black box that sits in the Air suspension system needs to be sourced and fitted, (was hoping to sell the removed LPG kit and Coil spring conversion to pay for these parts. Then to my untrained eye the Rangey could get 4 new tires (replace two air bags) and an MOT prior to being sold. Problem is the V8 now runs and no one wants to buy the bits. Sooooooo. Does anyone want to swap projects? Really i want a defender..... I know.... please stop laughing. I am just trying my luck. Proposing a swap. All my range rover bits and P38 with fun V8 for a defender project. Once you stop laughing i look forward to the replies (i know i will get some abuse but be gentle) Thanks
  2. And it was fuse 1 all along.. now I feel like a complete novice. Still onwards and sideways.. fuel leak and radio not outputting sound. Thanks all

  5. Gents, ladies and collective. My apologies if this has been covered. However... I have been playing with a p38 it has been stood around for quite some time. And so far I have played enough that the engine starts and it moves under its own power 😁 but.... What I now have is the hevac blinking on and off. The dash seems to pulse. The fuel gauge pulses with the hevac. The warning lights on the bottom left also blink all be it dimly. If I turn on indicators the pulsing changes frequency. My first thought was an earth, I checked the one in the footwell and seems ok. Now I am stumped. Equally I have no sound from my radio. If that is related?! It is a 1996 4.6 V8 auto. Any help or suggestions would be epic. thanks in advance Gareth
  6. That's what I thought but there is no obvious place that it fits / reaches. The closest available is the Schrader valve on the fuel rail! I am very perplexed, but thanks for the shot!

  8. And yet, If we were to all add up the amount of money one or two of us have spent on our land rovers over just one year, you will most likely come close. as was said land rover should treasure the more utility side of their family.
  9. I dont know about that! If they were to provide a few of us with free samples! I would like to put my name forward! We could fit them to our vehicel and test. that might make up for it a little.
  10. One thing i neverunderstood, Why a company does not have a loss leader on this forum. The amount of us who require doors could purchase them at a reduced cost, get the sales for the compay up, we get new doors and possibly even have a nice sticker on our pride and joys to show others who produced the parts. Or am i just waisting my days with pipe dreams?

  12. If it is the turbo then you know! If not the list just grows! Injector pump? scored bores? Lift pump? Mine was a mixture!

Remove the rubber hose where it attaches to the turbo (the silver thing on the right hand side of your engine as you look from the front) With rubber hose removed you can now look into the turbo intake (compressor vanes looks like a fan) if you see oil (black fluid) get your finger in (should of said turn engine off first) Try to wiggle the fan, if it moves there is apossibility your turbo is on the way out! win! If not it is the breather pumping oil gas in! There is a potential bodge, butdo that first. Will try to find a pic and attach it next
  14. It could be a bad sign, the 19j is reneowned for feeding off its own oil before dying, Check the intake for traces of oil, hope for none. i am hoping with you
  15. I think the Golden Rule, if you take nothing else away, is Always have a back up. and check everything at least twice. Get used to turning things off. Tell others of your plans and stick to routes and times as best you can. Sounds simple stuff, but it works.

  17. CaptCarrot, Thank you And I deffinately agree about over preparing, which is to say you will think you are over preparing, but god forbid the worst happened, you will know what to do. With regards to repairs, it is an argument to keeping your chosen vehicle as standard as possible, as standard parts are a lot easier to source/ find that the new fandagled one off's! Plus a lot of bush mechanics can easily bodge standard spec. try finding a local who knows what that fancy new double extra long thingy ma bobber is, let alone fix it. Rubber hoses and pipes take a hammering, if it flexes and you have the space, take a spare. virtually every vehicle that has gne on an overland journey has broken a suspension component at least. The wife was one on Some sort of atkins fad diet, and in the process got water flavouring powder. one teaspoon diluted 1L the point being that water that tastes horrid from those jerry cans can be made to taste a little better with flavour. dry pwder is easier to store than a lot of robinsons. even if you like the taste of plain water and the cans you use are taste free, drinking just water day in day out, makes you sick of water. (ask me how i know) And bare in mind, if you are going across any desert. do not panic about the sand... any one who has been in a desert will agree, its the dust that gets you. into everything, so do not take anything sentimentally valuable. I would say on the fuel front always add 10% at least.

Plus to add on to what Dave says, it all depends on what type of overlanding. he admits that space is limited in his 90 which forces his hand in other areas. however if you were to collect your items first and then map your vehicle around that, you will get the best match. that said, compromises will always be made. eg taking a 130 loaded to the gills full of kit just because you have the space, will burn A LOT of fuel and money, plus wear out components like bushes quicker.

  21. Forgot to ask, What country/ countries will you be driving through! because that again will be a major factor in equipment and vehicle suitability, Will you have regular access to clean water. Power. food. The less access you have or greater distnace without, the bigger your vehicle needs to be, in order to carry this equipment.
  22. Start camping a lot now! You will soon realise just how much equipment you will use and can live without. it will also give you the option of getting to know how you live out of boxes/ bags. You will then be able to start building up equipment. Use this as a guide to your vehicle, other wise you risk, a 130 being big for your needs and end up taking too much. Or a 110 being a bit too small and end up forgetting something/ having to leave bits. In the military i deploy into the field often (RAF 11 years and i have never seen our ambulances or any of our landys towing any aircraft.) and living out of a bag you quickly realise what you use often and can not do without. experience is invaluable and it may be, that the way you live on the road, you can cope with a 90 and a roof rack.. I know this post seems a bit all over the shop, but it is how my brain works. So again, get camping (if you both like glamping then a 130 it is) learn what works build a list of what you need and get a vehicl eto fit. worrying about the vehicle first can lead to comprimise. which will drive you crazy after several nights driving and camping.
  23. It is possible that the relays are behaving them selves and that you are just paying more attention to something you would normally hear! I found the best way to test relays are to either remove ones that should not be connected, and or touch the relays and feel the operation (this method can be a little tricky with several relays close together vibration travels) but if in doubt isolate by removing relays and or fuses. no amount of testing is bad. sometimes better to over test.
