  1. Clean it up as much as possible given a reasonable budget and timescales. Even if someone is going to do a total restoration, a tidy product is more likely to get them to part with cash.
  2. Could it be a mistake? If not, then that is outrageous.
  3. I did calc, assuming all the big end slop ends up on the circumference, it results in 0 .18 degrees.... so it makes no difference in the practical world.
  4. As red90 says, the crank position will be slightly different for same piston position depending on which way you turn the engine. The two positions should be taken with the engine turned in the same direction as when its running. I suppose i could attempt to calculate it but i really dont think its significant unless you are F1 team aiming to squueze every ounce of power out the engine.
  5. For example. Take left hand and touch end of thumb with end of first finger to make a circle. Take first finger from right hand and put it in the circle. Now move right finger in a circle clockwise. At all times your right finger is pulling on your left hand. Now move right finger anti clockwise. Unless you have fat and stumpy fingers, your right finger moves across the gap before it touches your left hand. This is the backlash, albeit on a much bigger scale, obviously dont do this in public else youll get strange looks. There will be tiny gaps in thr places mentioned (needed for lubrication) so the reverse movement will need them to be taken up before the piston moves.
  6. Yes. Backlash. There is tiny clearance at both ends of con rod as well as crank bearings Turn it one way the clearance us taken up, turn it in reverse there will be tiny gap that needs to be taken up so esults in no con rod movement. Is it significant? Dunno, my guess is maybe 1 or 2 degrees on new engine, depends on how accurately you want to set the timing. It is a faff but is for a reason.
  7. Ah, but with all the compo you get you can afford a chauffeur and a philipino maid to put your socks on. Or sew a shoe lace on each side of the sock and use them to pull them up:)
  8. Me? Im guessing piston stop is bolt on end of spark plug that stops piston? I suppose there is small chance of leaving tiny indent in the piston that but at tdc crank can move a some degrees without piston movement, hence you need to take two positions. As explained here, scroll down page. http://www.burtonpower.com/tuning-guides/tuning-guide-pages/camshaft-fitting-timing.html
  9. removing the head is best but a lot of faff. I've only ever done it with a dial gauge and head off but I reckon the following may work: - take an old spark plug and drill a hole in the centre so a thin rod e.g. piece of coat hanger wire can slide freely - fit an angle gauge to the crank - you can find pdfs to print off on the web - take two points, before and after TDC where the rod is same distance - a dial gauge would be best and mark the angles - TDC is midway between the two marked points you wind the engine in one direction to avoid any backlash as you already noticed, at TDC, engine can turn a few degrees without any piston movement hence why you need two points.
  10. As Tommy Cooper would say, don't go to those places. Blinkin' flip, every day is a bonus as in theory you could have been easily killed. ATB for a speedy recovery.
  11. You know what they say: those who can, design analogue, those who can't design digital, those who can do neither, write software IMO that is an overkill. an arduninino is probably more powerful than the computers on the Apollo space missions!. ... but if it gets the job done, who am I to argue, we live in a crazy world.
  12. Ring counter, see [url=http://www.allaboutcircuits.com/textbook/digital/chpt-12/ring-counters]http://www.allaboutcircuits.com/textbook/digital/chpt-12/ring-counters[/url You will have four stages, the first is not usex so will be the power off position. The clock is the debounced pulse from the switch.
  13. You can use relays to wire then so they are latching. I think three states is probably possible but would need some thought. PIC is a solutuon but needs develoipment kit and some programming skills but then again it can be done with logic gates. If you are stuck, let me know and ill think about a non pic solution.
  14. So the bores must spin round, that must use power, how is it sealed at the top?
  15. Re. We have a great motoring heritage in this country of old men with beards in sheds making great things, that would all be lost, and the motoring aftermarket industry with it. Something like this http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/forum/4/viewthread.php?tid=178173
  16. Another product to try is leather dye, the plastic may be porous enough to be stained.
  17. Regarding groove on pulley, trick i was told to get around that was not to tap the seal all the way in so the lip on the seal runs on a less work section of the pulley.
  18. Remember power is proportional to square of voltage, using the two minimum values, thats 15 W difference. Coils do run hot, youd struggle to hold one for long.
  19. But is it insurance company problem? Client who had car stolen will pay higher premiums and the rest of us will see a small hike. When was the last time you heard an insurance company go bust, i cant think of any The kand rover should be left with a chaffed petrol hose under drivers seat and some worn wiring to accidentally set the petrol on fire after a short time the ignition is on before the extinguisher systen turns on.
  20. I'd be interested what exhaust system you are going to fit. Is it going to be a cut down RR or Defender or something else?
  21. Could it have come undone and the head caught on the bolts behind it and then snapped off?
  22. Yes. Two HUNDRED THOUSAND!!!!!! Fek, it hasnt got original engine and is as close to concourse as youd like to be to the zika virus.
  23. On ebay at the moment. Aint got original engine, chasis and general condition poor, missing original parts. So guess how much (be sitting down for this)
  24. Im sure you are aware but flash rate depends on the load i.e. the resistance of the filament bulbs. Led lamps have lower resistance so the flasher wont flash else flashes at a slower rate. So you need a flasher relay. This requires additional 12v supply but is independent on any load, meaning its ok with any type of bulbs and any number of bulbs e.g. a trailer . Obviously the flasher relay contacts have a current limit but that doesnt matter for what you are doing. If your dashboard has a led indicator lamp, then it may not work, the indicator stalk reverses polarity istr, fixed by fitting 4 diodes as in la bridge rectifier.
