It seems poignant to ask this after reading yet another, "I'm stuck on a lane, bogged to the axles, oh and it's 10:30pm", post. For those who don't do Facebook, you are spared the despair of reading such posts. But I don't get it, why go out; a) at night b) ill equipped c) driving unfamiliar terrain at night I go solo laning exclusively, much less hassle with other parties enjoying the countryside just as I am, been out in groups but it's not my bag, I like to bimble along in 1st/2nd gazing through the trees or admiring the views of our diverse landscapes, too many drivers believe they're in a rally or something which defeats my objective in going laning. I think my vehicle is well maintained and suitably equipped, winch, rope, strops, axe, bow saw and a shovel, I also have normal gear stowed like a torch with spare batteries, extra boots, spare clothes and a charger for my phone, essentials like bulbs, first aid and fire extinguisher live permanently in the car. Can anyone understand why these folk go off (commonly with female companion) to green lane at night and in vehicles with little more preparation than bigger wheels and snorkels that aren't connected. Sign of my age noticing indifference to others perhaps?

If it's anything like Sean's D2, he took tank off just as advised by me and ended up replacing the rear chassis rails from the rear springs back and is 6months into saving for a galvanized chassis to replace the whole thing.Bargain D2 for £1800 turning into endless money pit rapidly.

Just be mindful of what you actually want from your new vehicle. Don't get too excited over add'ons, the best thing to do is to bring it first upto scratch mechanically, things like replacing clutch fluid, replacing brake fluid, gearbox fluid has an overly long service schedule, as do the diffs and transferbox. The Discovery 2 has a reputation for rotten rear chassis, spending time removing the fuel tank and applying preservatives, painting and chassis internal waxing is time better spent than mooning over the must have in this months LRO. Making your new vehicle uber reliable should be top priority

Isn't it odd how JLR is following BMWs philosophy with the X series vehicles, different sizes of the same thing. Progress is a must but the latest gimmicks are just that, even more stuff to go wrong

Best advice is go to a book shop buy a few Ordnance survey maps for your area and surrounding and look them up, great fun, I prefer to lane solo, although some feel it's irresponsible to go out alone I find much less animosity to be had when encountering walkers and such. Just make sure you're well prepared and go off with your flask an baitbox an have a good time. How well prepared is your truck?

The advice I was given was to do a partial rebuild, as in, cross drilled input gear, input seal, do the intermediate shaft O rings(look for "intermediate shaft bodge" as you only change one!) output bearings and seals.Apparently it's not that hard Not got my spare apart yet to say for sure!

Since buying some cheap ones whilst grocery shopping in Lidl I wonder what I did without them now! These look like good replacement tools as the cheap ones are wearing out, especially the 10, 13, 17 & 19mm ones.

James, I never understood the whole dodging road tax thing over here when series became exempt in 96, if we paid taxes here like I did in NL I could, but a couple hundred quid is a tenth of what I paid there!Ironic really that they pay over the odds for tax exempt vehicle, spend more than it's worth getting it to be the Defender they actually wanted and do so mostly knowing they are breaking the law just to save a few quid. But in a way you're right, VOSA tug and a bit of publicity might scare a few into doing the right and legal thing? Although, I considered trying to cheat the system in NL it would have paid itself within 2yrs, I worked out a guy doing the same here would be waiting 11yrs before hs tax exempt conversion started paying him back.

Quite true, also there seems to be a growing idea that the countryside should be open to everyone, and that it is socially acceptable to enjoy outdoor life and pursuits, just not vehicular users (quite sure this has been this way for a long time but i am seeing it more than ever lately)
