  1. hello, i am considering transplanting a v8 into my 1991 3dr 110 200 tdi defender... first and foremost, which v8 engine is going to give maximum grunt in standard form ? do i need a conversion plate to connect to the lt77s gearbox ? is the standard gearbox ok to use with the v8 ? etc etc .... alternativly, has anybody got a v8 90 who wishes to swap for my 110 !
  2. hello, i am sorting out the ariel system on my defender, and wanted to know what the ally tuning ring does thats fitted to the rubber mount, the ring sits between the rubber ariel mount and the top of the ATU box. its a racal " base, antenna element mk 3 " if it helps and has some sort of tuned circuit in the base. i am intending to fit a cb radio, and wanted to use the military ariels, the problem i am having seems to be related to a poor groundplane when i fit it to the side arm. i have an earlier rubber mount on a side arm, and it dosnt have a tuning ring, but it also connects the coax differantly any ideas ? cheers...
  3. hello, providing the voltage isnt a problem, however as i dont have the lead to connect the ATU to a power supply, i still need the pinouts to power the ATU up ( so i dont fry any circuits ) anybody got a power lead or can confirm which pinouts do what ? cheers...
  4. hello, ..to see if it works I would assume that they can be tested on the bench etc without being connected to a full radio setup and thought there maybe a way to provide 24v supply, using either two 12v batteries or a converter etc. the hunt for a solution goes on cheers...
  5. hello, Has anybody got any of these securing plates ? MRC 9423 +MTC 4049 I am assuming they are galvanised, so that the metal plate ( MTC 5081 ) dosnt react with the ally sides of the landrover cheers...
  6. hello, i wish to power up my Racal 543 ATU, however it takes its supply from a 24volt radio, but my defender is a 12 volt system,as is my radio..any body got any wiring diagrams/pinouts etc or workable solutions for these ATU's. Cheers...
  7. evening, your camera has a macro mode, which will enable you to get very close to the subject material, from checking the specs :Min Focus Range: 50 cm - Macro Focus Range: 10-80cm if the flash is being used, standard batteries never last long, and re-chargeable batteries will last far longer. tripods will almost elimate blurry pictures, it may have to close to focus, if you wernt in macro mode. hope this helps. Cheers...
  8. evening, i also drive and maintain various coaches, volvo b10ms mainly, as well as a couple of dafs, and are all fitted with brake exhausts, and i also find them very useful, generally for steep downhill gradients, but you obviously need to be in a low gear to get the rpm up, then select the ex brake, very effective, dont know what effect they would have in a 2.25 landy, i know my defender comes slows down considerably, just by letting of the throttle. i wouldnt think it would take to much effort to graft one onto a landy..best bet is to ask at your local coach depot, and have a good look at them. cheers...
  9. i bought some 2 inch closed cell insulation,(from a diy store) stuck it to the inside of the door bottom, bought a sheet of 2mm ally, (from a steel stockists) cut/fit and rivetted it to all 3 doors, it was non chequer plate, is i dont need any grip on the inside of a door panel, then applied the militarys finest paint ! cheers...
  10. evening, try the following link, there seems to be any amount of differant configurations, depending on your needs, laptops, gps, phones, etc i bought a mount for my garmin e-trex, very sturdy and can be angled pretty much where you need it. http://www.ram-mount-uk.com/ cheers...
  11. evening, the "safe speed " will be dictated by the load/road/weather conditions etc maybe a post in the international section will yeild an answer from a more experienced towing type person ? cheers...
  12. evening, without digging out the sankey manual, i think the military recommended a top speed of 45 mph, but thats not to say you cant tow one at the legal towing speed limit of the country you are in. towing isnt about how fast you can go, more, what happens if you need to brake quickly, road surfaces, side winds, load stability etc, safety should be paramount, for yourself, and other road users. cheers...
  13. evening, looks like i am missing a good 10 mm from my vent panel ! i have looked at hundreds of airportable pics, but most are all botled together, so its not easy to gauge profiles etc, an ideal situation would be a complete picture of just a vent panel from various angles. thank you for taking the time to measure your vent panel for me, i can at least now get started on making a new one. cheers...
  14. evening, i use tyre levers to change the tyres on the coaches we have at work, its quite easy once you have done a couple, mind you, its just as well they last for years ! the trye levers are about 3 ft long ! I put my 235's tyres on disco rims without any problems, just used liberal amounts of duck oil. cheers...
  15. evening, just wondering if you could go outside and measure the vent panel depth B)
  16. evening, for " general use/ greenlanes " keep it as it is, it will do the job intended perfectly. and being a cheque book mechanic, you could always use the cheque book to buy some manuals ...dont get a 90, keep the series and have a vehicle with more character and charm !! cheers...
  17. evening, all that salt and sand..Arghhhh ! B)
  18. evening, i had a full length brownchurch roofrack fitted on my defender 110 when i bought it, i sold it about a month later ! i found the following.. 1) increased fuel consumption 2) increased noise levels 3) increased body roll, cornering etc 4) you can't carry alot of weight on them (safely) 5) have you ever lifted one up ? there are very heavy ! 6) the suspension bushes and suspension also have extra burden on them, but i guess there are pro's and con's to most solutions :-) i think roof bars would probaly be a better bet, and when you go on your hols you could mount a peice of ply inbetween for the camping equipment etc, and remove it on your return, leaving the roof bars fitted for you house diy projects B) cheers...
  19. evening, could somebody measure the depth of the vent panel ? (top bulkhead) i need a measurement from the top of the panel to the bottom. (the top being where the windscreen sits on, and the bottom being where it sits onto the top of the bottom bulkhead ) the base of mine has rotted away across its entire lenght, but before i can fabricate a new one, i need accurate measurements, my vent panel (top bulkhead) is approx 1510 mm long, and have taken a rough measurement of its depth of around 135 mm ? cheers... :-)
  20. evening, my airportable vent panel is complete scrap,as far as its role in being a vent panel ! but i intend to either replace the vents with sheet steel, and make the panel solid, or try and fabricate one from a series 3 bulkhead ( cut down of course ) you can still buy them new for a few hundred pounds, and i dare say that somebody may have one for sale, but i am guessing they wont be cheap. i am near to completing a complete rebuild of the airportable bulkhead, and the next item on the list will be the vent panel, i will be posting pictures, as and when bits are finished. i could have simply bought a new bulkhead and vent panel, but at around £1000, it was a little out of my budjet :-) you could ring some of the following, maybe they could help ? http://www.jakewright.com/default.aspx http://www.paddockspares.com/ http://www.pablanchard.co.uk/ you wont find a vent panel on their websites, you will have to enquire. cheers...
  21. evening, who in there right mind would pay £125 for a land rover steering wheel ? i fitted a leather range rover item, instead of the old 4 spoke..cost me a fiver !
  22. evening, i have the same door tops, with the same handles...and the same problem with the sliding windows, i.e being able to slide the windows open even in the locked position. you could fit the other type of window lock, but i found them to get in the way, as they are alot bigger. my door tops have all new handles and have been reglazed and new felt fitted. to stop the rear one from being forced open, simply drop a length of ally in the front channel, with a raised section, so you can put it in and out, (or fit the series lock ), but this still leaves the front sliding window, my series 3 109 safari has a sliding loch mechanism fitted on the rear windows, but then if you have the military glass fitted, its 4mm thick and reinforced, so cutting a series one down would be much use. on the front slinding glass window there is a recessed black peice of plastic for sliding the window open and shut, maybe that recess could be used to hold the front one closed ? its something i am still pondering myself, if i find a proper solution, i will post my ideas. cheers...
  23. evening, i wonder how many mpg that ship of theirs does....
  24. evening, having traveled from cumbria to southern spain, last year, covering nearly 4500 miles in my 110 defender, the following points maybe of use. i serviced the landy fully from top to bottom before departing. made 3 photo copies of all my documents ( leaving one set in the safe at work ) bought 2 new updated maps of spain and france ( ring binder versions are better ) carried 2 x jerry cans full of fuel ( although filling them once in france is a good idea, as alot of ferry companys dont like you carring extra fuel ) took 40 litres of water the toll roads are not as expensive as alot of people will tell you ( for mileage covered ) the speed limits are lower than in the uk, on normal roads, which can, in places take ages to get anywhere most shops shut around 1pm ( french time ) and reopen later in the day fitted a fire extinguiser, never used, but everything gets that little bit hotter, especially on the plains of spain, where it hit nearly 100 degress ! i had to be real careful as i have a 110 hardtop, when joining motorways etc, but i adjusted my nearside mirror to help with the blind spot rechargeable batteries and 12volt charger, (for torches, cameras etc ) spare wire and connectors a short wave radio is a nice option, in case you get homesick ! some things have been mentioned on previous posts, so in all, i would say most things have been covered, spare parts are a personal thing, some people would have you taking everthing, others nothing, common sense should prevail. i camped on various sites, but avoided the bigger municipal sites, as i wanted a quiet holiday. I have just come back from touring scotland,to the tune of 2000 miles and took the same things as i went abroad with. the rest is your adventure ! cheers...
  25. evening, i realise this, but thought i would use the forum first, there's a chance it wont cost me to much :-) cheers...
