Just another quick query on replacing the speedo cable (apologies for the threadhijack Ivan!): When attaching the speedo cable to the speedo cable drive gear on the transfer box I assume that the 10mm nut just needs to be nipped up to hold the cable in place rather than being tightened right up? I only ask as I have just broken a replacement speedo cable and had done the nut up tight - my thinking is that it was tightened way too much and the cable was unable to turn and snapped (it snapped literally at the speedo drive gear end...) Any help / advise / ridicule accepted... Thanks in advance. All the best, Paul

The head is cracked and warped. Garage have quoted a high 'worse case' scenario so I have decided to bite the bullet and order a remanufactured 300TDi from Turner Engineering with a gas flowed head on the basis that the Landy is my car for life and this way I'd know the engine was a good 'un. From what I have heard the Turner Engineering units are superb and my communication with them so far has been excellent. Thanks for opinions and ideas.

Liking the look of this - good find. Regarding wiring up to a warning light - could that be attached to a spare dash warning light? Might be a daft question but I am not electrically minded at all!

Hello all, Being offshore means our internet isn't as reliable as home, apologies for slow response. Thanks for replies so far. Moose - it has shown no signs of spewing large amounts of white smoke. Discomikey - It has slightly increased boost, bigger intercooler, etc. Think next course of action is to get the head pressure tested and go from there. If that's foobar'd then a replacement head, shells and rings and put it back together. If the head is OK then ?? Anyone else offer any opinions?? Cheers, Paul

Hello all, I have a 300TDi Disco engine installed in my 90. It has been trouble free for years, gets regular oil changes every 6 months, it has been using coolant but not litres and litres, doesn't run hot (has aftermarket gauge fitted), is not down on power and doesn't smoke (more than any other 300TDi) but recently it has started to sound quite 'tappety'. The mileage on the engine is unknown but we can safely assume its well over 100 000. As I work offshore on 5 week rotations I left it with my local garage for them to try and assess the issue with a view to fixing it. Consequently, they have removed the head and discovered signs of water in no. 3 cylinder along with uneven wear. One of the pushrods is also slightly bent. Now, I am not that mechanically minded and the garage are saying that the head will need pressure testing and skimming along with the block sending off to a specialist to be assessed and potentially rebored. The crank looks OK visually (not been removed from the engine). Can anyone offer any opinions / help / advice as to how to proceed from here? Thanks in advance, Paul

Good morning all, I hope you can advise; I recently took my 90 to the garage after the alternator wiring loom fried itself amongst other things and, long story short, they fitted a new temperature gauge sender. In itself not a problem except my gauge then read wrong... Some detail; its an ex military 90 (12v) with a 300Tdi from a Disco and it has a TIM electrical water temperature gauge. It normally reads between 85 and 95ish during normal driving conditions. The new sender (the garage said there was a 'black' and a 'green' available) caused the gauge to never read above 45 degrees. I went back to the garage and they fitted the other sender in and the gauge now reads 110 degrees within about 10 - 15 mins of normal driving. I suspect they have used the standard LR temperature sender. I think I need the TIM part but can anyone help me with which part no or description I need. I am working away from home for 4 weeks so I can't check anything and I would like to order the relevant part so I can fit upon my return home. Do any of the wise LR guys on here have any ideas or useful advise.... Thanking you all in advance, Paul

ta for prompt replies, its always good to know who to use for parts but also for some of the larger stuff, like when something goes bang in an expensive sounding fashion (althoug, touch wood, the 90s not thrown its toys out the pram in a long time...) Good afternoon one and all, I've been successful in enrolling on a MSc course at University of Plymouth starting in september so going to be moving down from Newcastle upon Tyne. I'm well catered for up here, can anyone recommend any recommended Landy independants in Plymouth / South West. I know Devon 4x4 are Devon based (I think the name gave it away!), had a look and they are 80 miles away. Devon is clearly bigger than I thought... Any ideas, similarly anyone to steer clear of? Morning all, I have a tidy set of the early 110 & military two piece doors, which have both windows slide & are made of alloy so won't rust (I'm led to believe). Its fantastic to be able to play offroad with no doortops, but there appears to be a rubber seal between the top & bottom parts of the door. Mine are well manky by now - are these a 'proper' part &, if so, can anyone give me the part number or recommend where to get some more? Ta in advance, Paul

Thanks for rapid responses guys, regarding 'greenlanes' I was under the impression that such ROW didn't exist in Scotland, or are we talking unmade tracks that are regarded as roads there?? T'would be sweet if they were... I've been lookng at the Calmac ferry site & they do a ticket which is relatively open in duration so the inner islands could certainly be added to the itinerary. Evening one & all, With the prospect of getting my 90 back soon (resplendant with new gearbox...) I want to get a crack on & finish a bunch of jobs that I have been meaning to do for ages... However, a change I circumstances means I'm long termish temporarily back at my mum & dads & the first thing I want to do is repaint the beast. I'm going to roller paint it (its ex-military) but want to sand it down & do a good job. They are adament that I can't do it here Sooo, I need to rent short term (a few weeks) somewhere like a barn or outbuilding but I have no idea where to start - is it a case of go ask some farmers? Do these sort of things get advertised? I'm not from a farming background & my parents live in suburbia. Any ideas on where to start? Based in Doncaster, would like power/light. What are people paying when they've done this...? Any help/advice gratefully recieved, Paul

Yet another vote for 255/85 BFG MTs, might cost a bit more but superb, I leave them on for everything - P+P sites, greenlanes, motorways & they seem to cope with it all, plus see to be lasting remarkably well. BUT - for the love of god, whatever you go for - make sure if they have white lettering, it faces inward!!! Its a Landy not a Jeep!! Cheers, Paul

I too was wondering where the reg. came from, but more in terms of there didn't appear to be a donor vehicle (I could be wrong), but go the distinct impression that its essentially been build from scratch...
