  1. Hi All, I've got a problem at the moment that everytime I go over a bump or pothole, the car makes a loud knocking noise- it's as though there is a knock as it goes over the bump then another one milliseconds after (as though a spring is bouncing up and down and knocking on the rebound). So far I've replaced: Front Turrets (one rusted through so replaced both) Front Dampers and bushes Rear Dampers and bushes A-Frame Ball Joint- which was knackered! Rear Rasius arm bushes. I'm also going to change the front radius arm bushes and the panhard rod bushes shortly, but can you guys think of anything else to check that I might have missed- it's doing my nut as I know it's not ment to do it!!! It's a 200tdi 90, 1990 if that helps...... Thanks in advance, James
  2. I have the same issue- on mine it's the power steering pump- theres a spacer/washer behind the pulley that rattles on the shaft. Might be worth a check- it sounds a bit like a key being tapped on a scaffolding pipe!
  3. Thanks for the advice- i'll get the bits ordered!
  4. Morning chaps, I need to replace the rear wheel bearings on my 1991 '90 200tdi, and am getting very confused by which bearing kit to get! The VIN of my defender starts 'HA', and it has disks on front and rear. When I look on Paddocks or Island 4x4, they offer two different bearing kits - 1 is partno DA2380 (for vehicles upto 'KA' vin, with DRUMS on the rear- so it's the right vin range, but wrong brakes), or partno DA2381, which is for vehicles from vin LA, with DISCS on the rear (so it's the right brakes, but wrong vin range). So.....which one will do the job?? Any feedback gratefully accepted :-)
  5. I was replacing the UJ's on the front propshaft, and i've managed to crack the shaft where the UJ yolkes go so I need to get a new one ordered. My question is whether its OK to drive with just the back prop on until the new front one arrives? Can anyone help please?
  6. Hi Guys, Just ordered an SW water temp gauge (mechanical) which has a 5/8" UNF connector on the end- does anyone know the size of the thread that the standard water temp sender unit on a '91 200tdi has as I'll need to get an adapter that will allow me to connect the new 'sender unit' to the thermostat housing? Thanks in advance, James
  7. I have the same problem on a 90 200tdi- i've tracked it down to the handbrake ratchet thats under the boot in the drivers footwell- if I click it up one 'notch' the rattling stops completely- it doesnt put the handbrake on but just seems to take up enough slack in the cable to stop the rattle!
  8. Thanks Guys- glad that it's not something to worry about :-)
  9. I've just fitted an SW mechanical oil pressure guage to my 90 200tdi, and am getting some odd (I think!) readings- wonder if anyone can help? When the oil is cold, and for about 10-15 miles, I get a pressure of around 40-50psi, but once the engine is warm, it drops to between 20-30psi. I've just driven up the motorway and the pressure sat at around 20-25psi all the way (doing 55-60mph). Is this normal, or if not, do any of you chaps know what might be causing this? Thanks in advance, James
  10. Had mine off at weekend- just 1 washer on mine (200tdi).
  11. Sorry to jump in, but should the clearances be checked with the engine hot, or cold? I've just done mine, but the engine now sounds more 'clattery' than it did before!
  12. Ah, thanks Western- I'll not bother trying to fill it with grease then ?
  13. Hi all! Just checked and adjusted the valve clearances, and also greased the prop shaft and UJ's. Whilst tinkering, I noticed a grease nipple on the top of the power steering pump..... there is no referance to this in either the LR manual or the Haynes manual (that I can find, anyway). So, should I whack some grease in, or leave it alone?? Cheers James
  14. Thanks for all your help- it's deffinately 30mm- been and bought the socket and job done! Thanks again, James
  15. Hi all, Just bought a 90, 200tdi and want to check the valve clearances- i've read to turn the crankshaft by putting a spanner or socket on the crankshaft pulley bolt, but what size is the bolt- can anyone help please? I dont have a socket large enough to fit, so meed to know the size ao I can buy one! Thanks in advance James
