  1. Slight problem with MOD single fuel policy though?
  2. James, Check out Cooper Zeon LTZ. Available in 285/60/18. I've been running them on my D3 and they have been really good. Look good too
  3. Hello everyone, Sorry that my first post in a while is a begging one I'm trying to get a truckman top for a Double cab back from near Banbury to Devon. Unfortunately there are no fixings for the top so it will need to go in a big van or a trailer. If anyone thinks they can help I'd be very greatful as it would save me one heck of a drive. I must be getting old because I normally wouldn't blink at such a trip
  4. Luckily you are placed very well for lots of stuff. Depending on what you drive and what you are looking for. Off road sites and greenlanes are all around. It's just knowing where to look. It's not as simple as getting an OS map though. The red dash & cross lines are Byways open to ALL traffic. This includes vehicles. However, it's very difficult to know exactly what is going on the ground. Are they all open? Will you get stuck halfway along where Farmer Palmer has been out with his tractor and 12 ton turnip trailer etc etc Be VERY careful if you try and drive across Salisbury Plains. There are plenty of routes but some are notoriously difficult to pick out (not obvious amongst the tank tracks) and the MOD plod are quick and keen to pounce. If you are come across as just some punter in a 4x4 trying to find some mud, you will et short shrift from them. Best thing is, as you point out, join a club. Local LR or join either CRAG or GLASS. Get some basic tuition on an offroad site. Above all, I don't recommend going out on your own armed with an OS map and the user manual for your vehicle first time around. That is a a sure fire way to get into trouble (I am sure you know that, but you would be surprised at the number of people who don't!). Good luck.
  5. Nice pics, Couple of things that might help you. They aren't tracks but (assuming you've done your homework) a public road. It might be nit picking but there's a perception by many non users that because it's not tarmac it's ot for driving on. Important distinction. Secondly, I'm assuming that you knew what the surface was like or you've done a fair amount of green laning or sim. Only you might get stuck on those road tyres and it looks like a long walk to find the farmer Sorry if this sounds a bit like "don't have fun, das verboten" just trying to be helpful.
  6. Gleam, don't talk to me about Gleam. You will never meet a bunch of more contemptable, narrow minded liars in your life (unless you join BNP of course, but that's something else). The website is their PR front. It doesn't have to be factual. I've never seen them put a pic and a genuinely factual statement up yet. Gleam are behind every National Park move against vehicular rights especially the YDNP TRO's. There are two ways to look at a RUPP that's under a DMMO request. 1) Drive it as you legally can, to ensure that they don't win. 2) Leave it alone until you are sure it's been approved (could take years) neither of the above is incorrect. It's down to the driver/rider. I hope that the law prevails correctly and that the GLEAM lie is exposed. Sadly they have a lot of money and a lot of selfish, self righteous, supercilious, sanctamonious erm.... run out of s adjectives, but you get my drift.
  7. Paul, looking at the pics that's exactly where four of us struggled through many years ago when I first started laning. It drifts there as it's exposed. After two or three hours we gave up and reversed back. It was deeper than the bonnet of a Rangie. We tried the ramming thing using an old battered 109 on 33" tyres and a rear locker. It didn't work. Glad he got out ok.
  8. Nice one Ralph, I was blummin freezing coming home and couldn't figure out why there was no heat flowing - good timing cheers
  9. I know someone who has the odd BT towable mast from time to time. Beast of a thing though, s'about 18 ft long folded down
  10. I haven't dealt with Guardian but I'm aware of their stuff, however it's another thumb up for first four for me. Especially as I've crash tested mine and it stood up really well
  11. I'd get an Evo or a Scooby. Right now they are cheap as chips. Spend £8k on a good one and the rest on petrol but I guarantee you it will be worth it (assuming he lives long enough that is) On a serious note, get an Audi A4 1.9tdi quattro. Loads of room, cheap now, mental mpg for what they are. Quick, reliable and far better than the Skoda even though it's the same platform. Or, another option. VW Synchro van.
  12. Top tip. It's generally frowned upon (well, it is by me anyway ) not to advertise g/lanes on public forums as very difficult because the wrong sort get the wrong idea and then go and treat it as a challenge. Personally I wouldn't recommend a route that caused damage to a vehicle because I wouldn't want the repercussions when someone bends their motor. Sorry to sound negative, you may not have been aware of such erm.. etiq.. etiket but unless someone mentions it.....
  13. Oh right. Sorry I forgot this is the forum for serious engineer heads who like to compare the size of their special projects
  14. An interesting weekend was had here at Projectblue Towers. Mainly it involved hard work (which I helped with ) until it all went a bit Pete Tong. So get yer witicisms out For the record, I wasn't driving it and no diggers were hurt in the making of this caption comp.
  15. Own up - your his neighbour aren't you
  16. I had a set of Mach 5's - best wheels I've ever bought. Never cracked despite some offroad hammering and I ran them up the same rock section that put a tangerine sized dent in a wolf rim. The spare even survived being in a rear end shunt from a transit van. Are the offered with a lifetime no quibble guarantee? Because if not, then it doesn't matter how many pics of cracked rims there are
  17. I picked up the LRO mag to read on hols and was stirred by the sight of that Disco2 with portal axles converted by Straight Forward supplies. I've never really taken an interest in all that portal nonsense cos it usually involves words like 'fabricate' and 'trial and error' but now I need to know more! So, the basic questions are: 1. Anyone from Straight Forward on here or does someone know them well? 2. Anyone know that Disco? 3. How messed up is the handling characteristics? 4. How expensive is that job? 5. Am I right in assuming it gives: front & rear diff locks and front to rear locking (assuming they used the correct transfer box) 6. Because of the gearing and load increases are we to assume a manual TD5/V8 clutch isn't man enough for the job? 7. Finally, in light of Bish's SVA thread, would such a mod likely render that Disco in the same boat as Bish's Rangie? Cheers
  18. Hello Alexander, welcome. That's an interesting vehicle you have there. I'm sure a few people will be asking for information on it. Lucky for you petrol is cheap in Russia!
  19. Good point James ta. There are a number of Freelanders going so anyone looking to get their tyres dirty? For a tenner? Ok, if it helps JST isn't going to be there? (sorry James, you never know, might be putting them off )
  20. LRE have arranged the use of their course at Awliscombe near Honiton for the Wessex 4x4 response group. However, due to a few people being unable to make it, there are a few spaces available on a first come first served basis. Program is Sunday morning at LRE, lunch at a pub then some green laning in the afternoon. Let me know soonest by text or email or on here. LRE is £10, the greenlaning is free (and optional) and the pub lunch as reasonable or as expensive as you want to make it(also optional). Total bargain B)
  21. So Nick got his 90 then? Wonder how long before he beats the sh..carp out of that as well? Back on track. I run my 90 most days on a 40 miles round trip. it's a td5 and on big MT's. It's not quick, quiet or economic, but I love it. The landrover will take the mils no bother. Chap at the Daily Driver Challenge had a 110 300tdi R plate with 235k on the clock. If you can afford it run a cheap daily driver (like a £500 diesel peugot) and the 90 for high days and holidays (you'll save the extra insurance and tax in the lower fuel bill). Oh and I'll see you at Wellington next (got worried and had to check the calendar for a moment) but I'll talk to you if you not stood near Nick cos once he sees me we will NEVER shut him up.
  22. Nice pic and I wish that common sense and evidence could make a difference but this has been coming for years. The YDNPA are utterly contemptable anti vehicle users and have been trying to shut lanes through whatever means they could. I've given up fighting now. It's an unstoppable tide of self righteous bobble hatted egomaniacs who demand their peace and quiet in the countryside when they go visit it on their days off. To all those people who have no other means of enjoying this beautiful landscape except by 4x4, I'm sorry. But I know I tried.
  23. I use a Dell PDA with a CF GPS. The reason is I can run two different software applications and it all runs from one power lead so nice and tidy.
  24. Woah, that's a mess. It was never that bad when I drove it. I took Dave Philips of LRO down there in a 130, which I guess would be a struggle looking at it now.
  25. If one has enough money to drop £60k on a car, one has enough money to pay the service costs. If one feels the service costs are over priced, vote with ones feet and don't buy it. If you are 3rd owner 5 years down the line, I think you'd be niave to pay £15k for say an LM322 and then complain when you get spanked for ££ on say, an ECU reset. When I bought an LSE, the guru who taught me so much about Land Rovers at Land Ranger in Stockport said:- "And don't forget it was a £30k car new, so budget for £30k car bills if you need to fix it" Luxury motoring is taxed in so many ways - main dealer pricing is one of them.
