  1. I am not too fussed between auto or manual. Manual would be better for towing work and would be the choice if cost and ease or fitment/availability were the same. At first glance on ebay there seems to be a few about for around £1k. I agree that dmf's are not bad cluctches but are extra expense/mither when they do fail. I would rather stick with a standard flywheel for this reason and by Neils comments the R380 and the dmf clutch will be struggling to handle the torque. I am going to have a look into the third option above, but if that fails then I will have to go down the puma route
  2. I have spoken with Neil at Rakeway this am, who was extremely helpful and has given me a few options. First being using their adaptor kit to put a puma 6spd box straight on which will take the power Second being a auto with a long bellhousing off a p38, and r380 but the clutches are not good aparantly as they are dual mass flywheels Third being a combination of p38 ds bellhousing, front of a hp22 from a disco 2, and the back end of a d1 if that makes sense! I am swaying towards the puma box as this keeps everything short and tidy and will take the power. From a cost point of view the best option is the 3rd as I expect the bits can be sourced second hand for a reasonable amount
  3. I am hoping the p38 bellhousing will fit. Then hopefully I can put an r380/lt230 onto that. My engine has arrived yesterday and the next stumbling block is that it has a torque converter on it and no flywheel or clutch!
  4. Does anyone know of anyone who has successfully got one of these engines in a defender? I am starting to build a 100" defender with this engine in it. Any info would be appreciated! For those who don't know the engine code it is out of a 530d and is a 3L straight 6 with 193hp. Seems to me to be a nice choice of engine for a defender
  5. Afternoon all I have a disco chassis which is having a defender body grafted onto it. Would someone be able to tell me how far the front bulkhead mounts are supposed to be from a certain point, either spring mounts or radius arm mounts. Quite a critical dimension as everything else is worked from that. Unfortunately I dont have a defender to hand to measure it off! Thanks in advance
  6. I have quite a few of these spacers, you may need the rubbers though depending on how many you need PM me if your interested Chris
  7. Spot on thanks, just the answer i needed. I have pulled the gubbins out of the pas pump so it doesnt do anything, I put a bit of oil in it and sealed it up as well so that should be ok. Basically im running a big hydraulic pump for steering and winches so I only need water pump and alternator!
  8. Afternoon all, I have a disco 300tdi engine in my truck and need to know if the pulley which the viscous fan bolts onto drives anything? The water pump appears to be on the top above the pas pump. I need to know as I may need to miss that pulley out of the belt routing or make some alterations to the front end layout Thanks Chris
  9. Evening all, Im having some trouble trying to find the right calipers for my mog axles. Im trying to find a front 4 pot caliper off a defender/disco/rr classic, more likely the latter. I have photo evidence of a caliper fitting, 'apparently' its a rr classic caliper which is also the same as disco 1 calipers. If anyone could tell me what it actually is I would be very grateful! You should see the caliper has 2 ports for pipes, I believe all discos and rrc's have 2 pipes to the front caliper. The pic shows only one feed to the caliper though, can the caliper work with just one pipe to it? Im guessing it should really have the 2? Are there any calipers which have just one port that look like that caliper? Hopefully you guys can help me out as im getting quite confused with all this and am desperate for 4 calipers to be on my truck Thanks Chris
  10. If it comes down to it, I have one of these knocking about.... (the LA12) http://www.linak.co.uk/Products/?id2=643 The which could be used with a bit of fettling, but it requires a bit of complicated wiring up and probably a circuit board
  11. An air ram isnt suitable unfortunatly as i dont have an air supply for it Its a replacement for the current chinese engine stop solenoid on the generator i have for my workshop. I used to work for a access manufacturer and they used them, but 12V, and i didnt think they were very dear, perhaps have to get in touch again! I tried ips but they were around the £150 mark for one a bit different to what i need. The bowers auto place is where i got the original quote! The last option is to sack it off and use a good old cable, but the genny is outside and has/had remote start from inside my workshop. Its such an effort going outside to turn it off! Chris
  12. Cheers guys The RS ones dont really look up to the job, the kam one does though! Will give them a ring in the morning Cheers
  13. Afternoon all Im trying unsuccessfully to locate one of these 24v pull solenoids.... They are fairly simple things and I have been quoted £180+vat from somewhere which is ridiculous i think! Anything similar/ish will do as i can modify where its going on. May possibly be able to change the circuit to 12v instead of 24v as well. I was thinking they would cost about £30! The wiring connector isnt important, nor whats on the end as i can adapt it to suit Cheers Chris
  14. Erm no!! The calipers are for a disc brake conversion and apparently the ones i need. Just had a chat with a local breakers earlier and he confirmed they exist but wasnt sure if he had stock. They could well be off a 300tdi Cheers Chris
  15. Hi chaps I need 4 front calipers and have been told they are disco 1, single feed. Do these exist and if so does someone have a part number please? Thanks Chris
