  1. Hello every one , Friday night again ,and my mechanic tells me `oh I have not done a transmission viscous coupling before and I would like a look to work out what to do . WELL people the job has been booked in for a week and I am going to Plymouth on Sunday morning for a week . DOES ANYONE KNOW how to change one of these ,is it simple or difficult ,can it be done in a couple of hours etc . Can I drive to Plymouth in 2 wheel drive , the RR is /has been good running around locally in 2 wheel drive . DO YOU HAVE MATES LIKE ME !! r.s.v.p A.S.A.P. coachman .
  2. Hello again friends . I once again have a problem , my rear axle differential pinion oilseal is leaking . I have been topping up the axle waiting for a slot in my mates garage , eventually the fitting day arrived , then was cancelled due to work load . Eager to have the work done I approached my local garage only to be told , ` A DIFF OIL SEAL ,OH NO WE WILL NOT TOUCH THAT ` W.T.F . why not ,well it will have to shimmed and pratted with + more diatribe . I went home and phoned around , Guy Salmon said there were 15 different diffs for the 94 RR Classic ,some have to be shimmed others not , Paul at RRR talked me through the work but still needed pulllers ,maybe shims . NOT STRAIGHT FORWARD at all . By now I am a little frought . I can swop for a complete diff , so I do not need any pullers or shims , but which diff . Has anyone else had similar probs . I am still awaiting the replacement Viscous Coupling . I am still running in 2 wheel drive mode and is temporarily `okay` Coachman .
  3. Does anyone else have trouble with this site ( access ). During my shakedown it was established that my viscous coupling was seized( the memsahib says ,yes and not before time ) ho ho ). Enquiries to Paul Atkinson were , £ 400 new or his mate can do at £250 each ,but only does 2 at a time ( I only have one ) . I phoned Harveys in Derby and they have a used one at £80 ,and thankyou very much . Paul had suggested I take of the front prop shaft ,so as to prevent any further damage . WELL gentlemen and Ladies , the car is transformed in 2 wheel drive ( prob same in 4 wheel drive ,but I had not had the pleasure yet of normal 4x4 mode in RR . My son asked what /how the RR performed and I described as maybe like a Mustang but with a view . More anon ,coachman .
  4. I have somehow lost my last text ,but being a bit `trigger happy` / short sighted / computer usage naff ,I shall start again.` I have now had the RR Classic for 12 months ,it is now M.O.Td and road worthy ,so a shake down run was on the cards . The car had not been driven for 5 yrs so the shake down was to be done with trepedition . I had kept my son in touch of developments via e-mailed photo`s ,and he was eager to see it . I also had enlisted the technical help of Paul Atkinson ,he is the RR Register tech guru . To attain a little originality I managed to find where the car came from 18 yrs ago ( supplier ),they arranged for me to pick up `dealer `stamped number plates ,tax disc holder ,rear screen sticker . So filled with LOTS of fuel and oozles of confidence I set off . First came the dealers in Liecester STURGESS LAND ROVER JAGUAR ,( the `F` type JAG is a peach . Second came Paul in Halesowen ,( I made the mistake of going through Brum instead of following my sat nav ( it looked shorter on the map ). Paul showed me his workshop ,he only has 12 RR Classics . Time was not on my side ,so I had to leave Paul and his wife . Onward and south ward ,I arrived in Plympton ( nr Plymouth ) 350 cosseted ,faultless ,miles later . While there I visited some of Devons beauty spots ,( quite difficult access by car sometimes ,so beware .) I returned home a week later I experienced very little /few problems to say the vehicles last few yrs . On returning home I had covered 740 miles ,(I still have to calculate the mpg ,but I do not feel it was THAT BAD .) NOW THEN what I have experienced is a distinct tightening of the steering and `skipping /skidding `from the front tyres on SLOW TURNING /CORNERING. ( manouvering ,parking .) I think the transmission Viscous Coupling is seized . Does anyone agree and where can I get the part ,does it have to be new ,spurios ,or OE , or is that just common sense . Coachman .
  5. So , after almost 12 months of RR Classic ownership .Eventually getting the car M.O.Td and road legal ,I decided to take the car on a shake down run .
  6. Hello every one ,the RR is home and sparkling due to some elbow grease and AUTOGLYM . I found the ride following the coil conversion VERY HARD. With research I found I had fitted Police /Military spec road springs ( spec not stipulated on Paddocks short list ). The springs have a load per axle of 5000lbs ,heavy duty are only 3000lbs . I contacted Rimmerbros ( a competent company )for a STANDARD HEIGHT /SPRING LOAD Spring x4 of .( after market £ 84.00) The coils ( springs ) arrived ,the mechanic booked in . Saturday arrived ,spanners /jacks/ cup of `T` ready . The package ( Rimmers )was opened and hey presto WRONG F LIPPING SPRINGS , the saga goes on . After sorting the spring debacle,I did some MORE cleaning and had a new Serpentine belt fitted ,time is of the essence as I am going to Plymouth on Thursday . I parked the car in the sunshine and went to make a brew ,I later went to unlock /enter the car using the immobiliser fob ,no ,the door will not open ,I then used the key ,oh no that did not work either . The other doors open /unlock with the fob but why not the drivers door , HELP. Coachman .
  7. Hello , I always forget something ,( she says if yur head was not fastened on yu would forget that etc .) What I am missing is /are the boot decals ,ie, RANGE ROVER Vogue SE. according to the RangeRover manual for a car painted NIAGARA the decals should be in MID SILVER . Does anyone one know of a source / supplier UK /USA . I ALSO FORGOT TO SAY ,I AM HAVING MY OLD abs ecu REFURBED BY ,BBA RE MAP of Rochester Kent .( no more are being made are they . Coachman . the seat ecu I bought from Chris of Stoke £80 does NOTwork .mmm
  8. Hello everyone ,now at last I can crow about my RR CLASSIC VOGUE SE . After much trouble with unkept promises of `yes I can`. I at last found someone to do all the work req`d, . The ABS brakes are working as per instructions, the welding has been completed ( another order to British Steel)( memories eh ),the `car` not `truck ` as some prefer to say has had a respray ,a new ( used) tail gate fitted ( or to say ,made to fit ).The V8 engine 3.9 is a peach anyway and has only had an oil / filter change,( convert to LPG later ),a back axle swop was req`d as the car was crabbing excessively, the front hubs have had new bearings ,all oil has been renewed as req`d , The car is insured fully comp with Carole Nash @£188 ( Heritage wanted £450),the car is MOT`D,and taxed . On the road it is SOooo quiet ,and what power ,( and YES ,the fuel guage works ). The ride I find is `choppy` maybe I should have swopped the shocks when I converted to coils from air ( but I was advised otherwise ) The tailgate was sourced from Harveys spares @ in Derby £ 50 plus etc ,as was the ABS ECU £ 80 plus postage etc. The costs so far inc car are a modest £3.500. I am very pleased with the efforts put in and although it was not ready for my daughters wedding I do not think it will be a wasted effort . I shall attempt a few pics. bear with me . Morale being ,persistence pays off . Coachman .
  9. Good evening friends , after much head scratching by my mechanic and contemplation of converting my ABS system to conventional servo brakes ,and after reading the proper works manual ( ABS SYSTEM) it was decided to check the brake ecu. Now I hear you saying ,why was not this checked first . Well as said before ,the RR had been worked on by a ` RR specialist ` the one who changed the pipe block , it was `assumed` he had done all the leg work to the best of his ability , ie ,ecu checks etc. Along story shortened again , The brake ecu was found to be water damaged and indeed internally rusty, a replacement was sourced from Harveys of Derby for £30 plus postage . This when fitted vworks a treat .Now brakes work fine and normal. So much for the `specialist`and the £450 I paid him , and 5 weeks in his exposed yard . That fixed the next prob that has cropped up is the electric seat /mirror control ( ecu )(I am told). This also is water damaged ,but are quite scarce ,even Harveys do not have one . I am meeting up with Chris from Stoke in a greasy spoon on my way to Donington where we shall swop coinage of the realm for a seat ecu . During my research for a company that may repair these ecu`s I have come across BBA RE MAN of Kent ,they have collected from ME via UPS my faulty seat ecu and for £38 will evaluate the ecu problem ,they will repair ( for a fee )and return to me . But if the prob is solved ,then is okay by me . Thank you for reading ,coachman .
  10. Sorry people`s , the RR in question is a 1994 3.9 Vogue SE( soft dash ) with abs ( AND SELF LOCKING BRAKES ). Again forgiveness is required but what is `RAVE` and how do I obtain .
  11. Happy wet miserable sunday to all, I am sorry to pester AGAIN but , I have had my RR to `specialists` who pertained to fix my brakes .(spelling maybe subject to correction ). To cut a very long story short . The work to my RR Classic has at last been finished to MOT level, the car was DRIVEN to MOT station where it passed ( hurragh ), on the return journey the car was `tested ` and was driven apace ,where upon the brakes returned to their previous manner and locked on stopping the car dead on the Stanningley bypass ( not conducive to harmonious relationships with other motorists ) ( I was not driving incidentaly ). The problem was bypassed and the car recovered back to work shop . The brakes have been totally repiped a replacement Wabco pipe block has been fitted as has a NEW pcrv ,and still the problem ,a man has plugged in his very up market diagnostic equipment in ,but the cars comptr would not allow access , WTF next do I do . It has been suggested I have it converted to conventional brakes ( as in my 300tdi Discovery ) but what about the insurance company , the originality , etc . I HAVE ASKED before and HAVE been helped ,but now I am quite desperate for some resolve ,is the conversion to a standard brake system `a done thing` is it indeed done . PLEASE PLEASE , HELP. I have even enlisted the Technical guys from the RR Register ,and Land Rover Monthly but with no success . Coachman ( West Yorkshire)
  12. Seasons greetings to you all .For a long time now I have had a rumbling /grumbling noise emitting from the rear of my Discovery 300 tdi . I asked my usual spares supplier for advise ,ie, was it tyres ,bearigs ,axle ,etc . I was answered with the typical ,savage intake of breath through the teeth and `let it develop lad `. This `sound` had previously accompanied me to Plymouth and back ,and I needed to go again ( christmas delivery to grangchildren etc ). So I checked all levels ,and havind recently sorted out my fuelling prob ( more later ) I set off . All was fine I even cruised at 70 mph for a spell , then the rumbling turned into a more audible grumbling ,this was 100 mile from my destination ,mmm, at this I slowed down to a steadt 60 max ,with the wife saying ` your going a lot slower than normal ,` and me saying ` oh we are in good time I am just taking things steady ,( the wife is easily alarmed ). I got to Plymouth and visited Brookwells and bought 4 wheel bearings and seals ( £7.00plus each )timken) I set of back in the daylight ( in case of breakdown ) and again all was well untill Donnington ,when the wife says WHATS THAT NOISE ,sure enough a squeaking noise WAS coming from the rear ,I again nursed the car the last 100 mile (to Wakefield ). Mondaay morning came around and ALL my friends were saying `its yer diff ` . I stripped out the half shaft and the rest can be seen in the photos . Merry Christmas and a H appy New Year Coachman .
  13. Here we meet again , true men ( and women ) one and all . The RR refurb SAGA deepens , bear with me . After removing the RR from a `mates` garage suffering empty promisses AND nothing after7wks there ,I had the RR uplifted to sanctuary ( pub car park near our house ). While this uplifting was taking place I was introduced to another `specialist `,I was promissed with `OH YES` I/WE can sort theWABCO PROB plus the electrics ,welding ,lights ,seat ,mirrors ,INFACT you leave with us and you will get RR back fully M.O.T`d and correct . 5 WEEKS later ,with phone conversations assuring me ALL was okay ,I rang to ask SPECIFICALLY how things WERE going on . WE are doing a pre M.O.T as we speak ( why a pre M.O.T ) WHY NOT DO all THAT IS OBVIOUS TO DO ie 18yr old brake pipes etc .check wipers lights and fix accordingly .( save cost of M.OT.) I phoned back 4days later ( as asked ) ,OOOH THAT R R NEEDS A LOT DOING ,(yes I know that is why it is wwith you ) It needs welding ,new brake pipes ,wipers ,/seat /mirrors need attention ( M.0.T FAIL X5 SHEETS ) 41 ITEMS ) F ME. I cannot do any more ,if you could take away and have welding done ,W T F .,if I did welding it would be out of works time etc etc . They have replaced the WABCO UNIT with another ( but a different pattern and casting shape ) and the brakes DO work . I paid him and said I would up lift RR . I enlisted the help of a man who was to do work ,before I was introduced to him above ( bear with me please ). The RR would not start as we picked it up ,I was gutted ,it would not even turn over ( the garage was closed fortunately ) so chummy dissapeared underneath with a 11/4" paint scraper and `hey presto` it started up ,what a beautifull sound the v8 makes ,aand sounded so intact it was soul filling . The RR was then driven ( with trade plates ) to this `other` place . I felt quite smug in a way . The RR looked good with no signs of wrongness at this point . As I followed in the Discovery at a steady 50 mph I again felt good ,then I began to takke stock of the RR . I thought ,I can see the inner side of the offside wheel from my position in thee Discovery ,MMM ,I positioned my self to different viewing points ANDYES the RR WAS crabbing .AAARGH. ONarrival at NEW place I pointed this out ,and said that I had in fact fitted coil conversion ,to which chummy said `no that will not affect it ` . WILL IT ,COULD THE CRABBING BE DOWN TO ME , I am AGAIN gutted . WILL this RR rise again . Coachman .
  14. I am getting a bit fed up now . I addressed my slow turning /starting probs with a positive attitude ,and things improved . But have since slipped back to where I was ,ie slow turning /poor starting . I have fitted new fuel pump /filters /heater plugs ,battery is well charged but on initial cranking , it turns over slow ,getting quicker ,then fires ( with blue smoke at hte exhaust )( I put that down to unburnt fuel .) Could I have faulty injectors ,or at least one . How are they cleaned /set up ,or is it a replacement . I see they are not cheap . AGAIN HELP.Coachman .
  15. Hello peoples ,I was browsing and found this usefull info ,that is if ever I getmy Classic done . Coachman ,
