  1. im looking to replace my 1998 disco 1 with something a little newer without breaking the bank ,i dont really want to go over 5-6k as i only do about 3-4 thousand miles a year in it towing a boat mainly in summer, ive had my disco ten yrs and its been brilliantly reliable and still is although a bit heavy on diesel. my question is are all later discos rotten underneath ? ive looked at three so far 2002-2005 and im shocked by how bad they are ,or is it just bad luck with these three? would an older rangerover fill my needs better i just need reliabilty and something thats gonna last a few years..
  2. hi all, can anyone point me in the direction of breakdown cover for a 20 yr old disco ? im having trouble finding anyone who covers vehicles over 16 years old . thanks
  3. the trailor i tow is a boat, 1.75 to 2 tonnish so not really light ,the engine is kept in good nick regualr filters oil and everything kept set and adjusted..
  4. hi ive got a 300tdi that has been converted from edc to mechanical pump, ive just read that it should have the injectors to match this pump? how do i identify if ihave the correct ones fitted? it seems to run ok but ive never been over impressed with the power of it .. especially when towing ..what symptons do ya get if running mechanical pump with edc injectors.. thanks
  5. thanks boydie .. great info ..
  6. hi , do the oil stats in 300tdi 's ever give problems? im just wondering if they need changing periodically or what the standard time is for replacing?
  7. hi can anyone put me onto the part number or where i can get the 2 small rubber hoses on a 300tdi turbo one is to the actuator and the other is small reducer for the pump boost pipe? i cant see em anywhere on the internet thanks glenn
  8. hi les, this one didnt come down at all ......i dropped the tranny down ,but it hardly moved, the top of the bell housing was still rubbing the top of the g/box tunnel ..as soon as the box moved back 20mm the engine droped down at the front trapping the torque convertor, i coudnt see why i could get no clearance till i saw how far back the engine mounts are...ive never had one drop down at the front before in any motors or vans ive done... once i got a jacking beam under it at the front it gave me just enough room to get it out and back in... only trouble it the torque convertor pulled off its splines.. i coudnt get a t/c seal today and had to get it back in as i was using the ramp at work.. (unnoficialy) i examined the seal with good light and really strong magnifying glass it looked perfect but i wont know till tomoz when i fill it....
  9. ive just got the box and torque convertor out, it seems was the engine dropping dowm at the front end and lifting the back up and trapping the torque convertor ..what does everyone who removes a gearbox do to help with removal and refitting ? mine was soo close to the bulkhead at the top it was right pig.. and pulling down on the back of the engine with ratchet straps help to get a bit of clearance but not a lot ... everything ive had in the past if you drop the box mountings the engine tips back enough to clear the bell housing ok .. not this bar steward though ...
  10. im trying to remove my auto box off my 300tdi disco 1.. ive removed 4 bolts from the engine side of flex plate but the torque convertor wont budge? auto box has moved back 15 to 19 mm or so just enough to see the back side of the flex plate ,,whats the trick to shifting it? i didnt want to tap it cos of doing harm? thanks glenn
  11. thats it then , ill pop the box back, simples as alexander says . is there anything i need to be doimg to an auto box while its off in the way of maintenance or stuff that i cant get to when its in situ? its done 100k miles now and it does seem to be ok ..
  12. hi all, ive got a 1998 300tdi auto disco , looks like the back crank seals leaking.whats considered the best way to tackle it as far as removing gearbox is concerned? is it easier to take off box alone or engine/box out as a unit and do it in comfort off garage? also while its out is there anything that i should be doing maintenance wise to the auto box while its out? mileage is 100k ..
  13. thats it les, have you ever used them on steering boxes ? i was just wondering if its worth a go supposing i can get one to fit+ as you say theres no play ..
  14. i have replaced the seal once about a year ago..your right they do fail again but i wanted to know if its a doo-able thing to use one of the speedy seal repair bushes if its just a pitted shaft causing the seal failure?
  15. hi, can anyone tell me something about steering boxes .. ? when the bottom seal goes is it wear/damage on the shaft? so is it possible to repair with a speedi sleeve type of seal surface repairer.. or is it not just the seal surface that goes or indeed is it not possible to fit one because of the way its designed? just wondering before i buy a recon box this week.. thanks glenn
