  1. Thanks yes they all look same to me also. I have ordered a new gasket (Land Rover genuine) and will see I think before I take apart what may not be broken
  2. No not sure at all just going on what a friend said when he saw the photo. He’s a mechanic so normally I would trust his judgement but he saw the oil and said this can mean only one thing ... rings!!! (Then proceeded to rattle off a list of others possibilities) hence I thought a little more investigation was worth while and there’s an awful lot of Land Rover experience on here
  3. Like the sound of that more than a head off job that’s for sure

  5. Hi. In process of replacing turbo as my 200tdi defender has been blowing blue smoke under load. took the whole unit off and manifold and found the left side port on the head to be pretty oily. A friend of mine says this is piston rings but I am confused as It’s not been blowing smoke all the time and surely worn rings would do this? i am also able to take oil cap off and there’s no heavy breathing or pressure issues should I take the head off and have a closer look or could this be something else? Thanks Adam
  6. Hi is there anyone on here local to Bewdley in Worcestershire who has the Nanocom Evolution diagnostic tool. Or any other way of programming a SH key to my car with the 6 digit code. Have tried the local garages but all want to supply me a new key or need key with barcode thanks adam
  7. Hi Can anyone help? We have a really frustrating problem with our 300tdi. Every now and then we can not start the car. It just won't even attempt to turn over. Other times there is a delay while holding the ignition key n before anything happens. At first I thought it may be a problem with the aftermarket immobiliser but now I am not so sure. When the mobiliser is activated you don't even get any ignition lights on the dash board but when we are having problems starting we get all the ignition lights glow plugs etc and still nothing So far I have checked the connections to the starter solenoid and all seems fine Anyone experienced anything similar? Thanks Ad.
  8. Thanks. I will order a new switch and see what happens Thanks again Adam
  9. Hi The stalk seems ok. And it works when lights are switched on. I guess it's worth trying. I will get on eBay and see what I can find and give it a try. Any other ideas if stalk is ok? I have checked fuses etc. not really very electrically minded any relays etc I need to explore? Cheers Adam
  10. Hi. We have just bought a 300tdi. Generally seems to be a good buy but we have a problem with the headlights. Turn the lights on and all is ok, pull to flash with lights on and all is ok. The problem is we can not flash the lights during the day unless lights are also on. Is this normal? I am sure I can flash the lights on other cars I have had without having to switch lights on. Anyone got my ideas what I need to look at to resolve
  11. Grinder bought today. Will add flap discs to my list and go do some more shopping. The welder now has a plug on it so tomorrow could be d day for my first attempt
  12. Thanks everyone. Time to get cracking. Will be back soon with an update on how it went
  13. What would I need to spend and on what model / type if I upgraded the welder?
  14. Hi. I am led to believe the boot has been done but I expect when I lift the carpet I will discover some more work :-)
  15. Thanks. Off to the shops forma new angle grinder tomorrow. If there is anyone local reading this who would be willing to help me out showing me some basics it's would be great. I live next door to,a great country pub so lunch and refreshment would be on me Ad
  16. Hi I dont think it's unreasonable either but it's money I don't have. I do have. Mig welder though. I guess it's nothing ventured nothing gained. I will have a go. At worse this car will become scrap and I will have lost some time Cheers Adam
  17. Here are some photos of the damage. Nicley marked in yellow by the MOT man. Whats the general consensus. Salvageable or scrap?
  18. Hi Thanks everyone. I think I will have a go on some scrap and see what happens. We are in Pensax, Worcestershire if there are any enthusiasts who could get me pointing the right way in my area it would be brilliant. I bought a mig welder a little while back. It's not even got a plug on it yet it's a Clarke Mig 145 gas or gasless it wasnt very expensive and I have no idea if it will be very good as I have read differing reviews The thought of treating the disco as a project and getting stuck in is really appealing but also pretty daunting. We don't have the cash for the garage though so its as good a time as ever to give it a go I guess
  19. Hi I am a new disco owner. Just bought a 1997 300tdi off ebay for the better half to get up and down to her horses. Bought it with (apparently) 1 months mot and understanding that it needed new exhaust and the sill welding. Thinking this would not be to bad I have had the exhaust replaced and booked the MOT. It was done today. Spectacular fail 13 different areas of welding required + a couple of slightly easier mech part to replace. I have never welded before (although I bought a clarke gasless mig welder a few months back its still in the box) The garage have said the welding will take them 3 days and want £800 for that before they look at the other points. I am shell shocked. Its my own fault I should have not fallen for the first disco I came to that was close to home on ebay. I am looking for any advice. Should a novice even attempt welding on a car? Any tips welcomed Thanks Ad
