  1. Thanks for all your advice. Shaft received the next day, quickly fitted and successfully completed the ALRC Team Recovery and Comp Safari.
  2. Hi all, thanks for your input / advice. We were aware of the full history of the shafts down to which events they'd done, gearbox, engine, etc. We've now bought a replacement from Ashcroft. Fingers crossed.
  3. I spoke to Dave yesterday and he said t looks like a failure normally caused by large tyres but we only run 205's and use an auto so that helps reduce shock too. Only option now is to buy more shafts. Are there any alternatives to Ashcroft for hardened shafts?
  4. Thanks all. Never had a problem with the Sailsbury and shafts are checked regularly (obviously don't have the diff out!). We like the idea of the standard axle as it's easier to try different types of diffs. I phoned Ashcroft and spoke to someone who didn't seem very technical. Never had any dealing with them before so not sure who's worth speaking to. Any thoughts?
  5. Hi all, Having recently changed from running a Comp motor with a Salisbury rear axle, to a standard RR rear axle with Ashcroft shafts, I’m after some advice on which half shafts are most appropriate for competition use. We’ve just broken the long rear Ashcroft shaft so after a replacement but taking into account the little use / mileage (ok, all be it Comp Safari) for what’s supposed to be a ‘Heavy Duty’ shaft, I’m a little nervous with replacing it with the same shaft again. The shaft is 7 years old but the motor was stood stationary for a few of these years and only competed a handful of times in the other years. ***Photo of broken shaft attached*** I'd be interested to know your thought on what other shafts people are running and people experiences with Ashcroft shafts. Need to get a replacement sorted for 22nd May to have a go at retaining the ALRC National Comp trophy. Cheers!
  6. The facts are true. Sugar was also put in the fuel tank and the sump plug was loosened to the last thread. We were all shocked to find this out at the Nationals. Any true competitor would rather compete against the best and loose rather than putting them out of the competition. At least a fellow trialer lent Neal his motor so he could still play (now that's the ALRC spirit!).
  7. Hi all, We're putting MS fuel only on the motor this weekend and tried to load FF's Project on earlier but he was running the old firmware. Has anyone got a good Project for Ms1-Extra running fuel only for a 4.6 V8 with a high torque cam? The MS is running 029y4. Cheers!
  8. Update - Been to see Rog and very impressed with the MS/EDIS8 setup. Looks like it will be great for us, but still feel we need to learn lots about the system first. If we have any problems we need to be able to fix them / have a redundant system available. We thought about going for MS/EDIS8 straight away and having the Dizzy still available should we need it, but now have learnt that as soon as we get the mod on the MS unit to work with EDIS8 we can no longer go back to the Dizzy. Therefore we think we need to start off with fuel only still. The bit on our motor that we really need at the moment is the Fuel as there is no Standard part for a 4.6 CUX. We have a standard part for the Spark - the Dizzy. It might not be the best solution but we know how to fix / replace it should it fail. We can then start looking at the Spark setup after we are up and running and if we have time before Round 1. If not, then we need to fit it in in-between Rounds. I've downloaded a fuel map that FridgeFreezer posted for a 4.6 V8 with nice cam, which should be close to ours. If we can get it running on Fuel only at 80/90% performance but not under fuelling then it must be close to how it performed on a 3.9 14CUX! And much better than 2 SU's! Like I said at the top, a 14 CUX for a 4.6 doesn't exist as standard. We've gone the MS route because of this and rather than the Mark Adams / MBE route due to the cost and the extra facilities the MS can give us but we need to learn. Will update as we progress! Cheers!
  9. Paddy, How did you get on with this? We too are looking at putting a TrueTrac into a Salisbury. Cheers
  10. Hi guys, This is our current MS kit. Here is our 14CUX pass through Our MS And closer The temp sensor The LC1 Wideband The Wideband sensor Cheers
  11. We're off to see Rog next Thu evening so I will have a look at everything then. The Inlet temp sensor - is this the one that goes into the Plenum? If so, we already have on of these.
  12. We've got a wideband to put on for setup only. Would we need to run with the narrowband in full time?
  13. FF - We're in the Midlands so it's a long way to see you. We did however have a look around your motor at Sodbury when we met up with you and Bill. So, IF we were to go down the EDIS8 Spark route, and I'm now trying to convince the driver it may be a good idea, I need to start getting hold of some kit. Please can you therefore confirm my list below contains everything:- 1 X EDIS8 (£40 from FF) 1 X 36-1 Toothed Trigger Wheel (trigger-wheels.com) 2 X 4-pot Ford Coil Pack 1 X VR sensor (from 4-pot Ford?) 8 X HT leads from Ford Anything else? Oh, I'll also have to find out about the MS-ECU mods that will be needed from Phil. On the coil packs, is there much difference between the 1st and 2nd generation ones? Which should we use? Noticed some kits available at trigger-wheels.com They look quite good. Could then get some spares from the scrap yard. Used £44.99 (£57.49 with new sensor and connector) Coilpack kit for 8 cylinder engines. Includes pair of coilpacks, coilpack connectors, and a VR crank sensor with connector. Cheers!
  14. If you've got that sort of money spare, you need to be getting one of these click The new Bowler Nemesis. Would of been great in the Dakar this year, but cancelled due to terrorists! DOH!
  15. Basically if we do the British Championship (and it's looking like we will), we need the motor to be reliable. We're going to be racing all over the country and we will have to finish the races and if we have any problems we need to fix it. Now you all may be saying 'Spark is the answer', but what do we do if the EDIS 8 packs up? We don't know about this at the moment. But if the MS unit packs up, we can unplug our 14CUX/MS converter bit and plug in a 3.9 or other (tvr, etc.) 14CUX to get us to the end of an event with only having to put the AFM back in. We have a good motor, a reliable motor and one of the best drivers but when we're racing against teams/motors with big budgets, really big engines and very (very, very) expensive motors that will beat us if they finish. We have to rely on the driver driving very well and finishing. This will be our answer to doing well in the Championship. The unknown and unfixable (for us) is what scares us! This may be unknown and unfixable (for us) now, but not in the future and who knows when that will be (3 months / 6 months / 12 months)? We many then look at the Spark. Or we go up to visit Rog, he convinces us the best way to go is Spark (EDIS 8), and we do it. Who knows!
  16. I'll try and take some photo's tonight. The MS was built by Mr Ringwood the he also created the 14CUX thing. It is basically a 14CUX with the a hole out of the back where the wires come out of, into the plug that goes into the MS. I think its just so that we could use the 14CUX Loom and plug still. It also meant that if the MS failed, we could just plug the AFM back in and put a standard 14CUX ECU back on. Confidence!
  17. Ok then. If we were to change our plans to Spark via EDIS 8, what would we need different? An EDIS 8 unit I take it for starters. Where could we get one from? (If a scrapper, what were they in). What type of trigger wheel, etc. Also what would we need to do to our MS unit. It's the v3.57. Do the inputs / outputs for spark just go through the main socket that connects to our pass through 14CUX?? One last question, where do you plug a Wideband into the MS? Does this get wired into the main socket that connects to our pass through 14CUX too? I was expecting a separate socket. Cheers!
  18. It was really good to chat with you Rog. We'll work out a day and pop up. I'll be in contact soon. Cheers!
  19. OK guys, We're finally going for EFI on our Comp Safari racer and are using the 3.9 EFI system on a 4.6 V8. We now have a v3.57 MS unit and a 14CUX as a converter. Are plan is to run MS for fuel only as Phase 1, learn about MS, and then Phase 2 is moving to Spark with an EDIS 8 unit. We then have the possibility of putting a Thor manifold on as Phase 3 if we wish to, as it should give more grunt at the lower end, but Phase 3 could be a long way off! So, I have been speaking to istruggle2gate11 and we plan to have a look at his motor before starting our install to get a look at one in action. He's also going to give us a hand with tuning (hopefully!). After speaking to istruggle2gate11 he has advised us to go straight to Fuel and Spark (EDIS 8) as it will be easier to setup. This makes us very nervous as we're only just taking the step away from SU Carbs, moving out of our caves and started making fire! Grunt Grunt!!! So, what do you guys think then? Option 1 - Phased approach. Phase 1 = fuel, Phase 2 = Fuel and spark Option 2 - Straight to Fuel and spark All / any thoughts are very welcome. Cheers!
  20. Hi Nige, We're looking at buying some sort of laptop to help set our MS unit up as didn't want to use the Works laptop! I liked the idea of the tablet you setup. How easy would it be to recreate your setup on a similar machine? This would be for the MS side only, not GPS. Cheers!
  21. Nige - You may find if your comper is ARC spec that your limited in its competivness????? There have been a few events this year where the ARC (ALRC) guys have been up against the AWDC/NORC/BORC vehicles with some very interesting results. With an ALRC motor you'll find that if you've got the cage tagged and have a current ALRC log book, you'll have no problems with being able to play anywhere. The best thing to do to find Comps is to look on all the websites and start writing them all down into a big list. Don't worry about sticking to one club, move about. You get to race against different motors and meet new people who will tell you about the Comps they go to. We always went North for our Comps and now go to a few MOC, EMORC, NORC events as well as our own ALRC events. Might try a few more NORC/AWDC/BORC events next year. Don't worry about an event being AWDC, SCOR or ALRC, when you're there, they're all the same. Everyone gets on. Just remember though. If your motor has a ALRC log book, you can use it in all events. As soon as you start mod'ing the motor and it fails the log book specs, you will only be able to do none ALRC events. Have fun!
  22. Well put Roverdriver. We too spent a lot on the motor before the Nationals. 2 years ago the stand selling tyres did a lot of business when it started raining in the Comp. And no effense to David's stall, I'm sure these Shocks are good for Road/Green Laning Landies, but people who are spending on Shocks doing these events are going for the upper market Shocks. If you look around at the motors being used to tow the competition motors there are a lot more Mits, Nissans and Trucks than they used to be and less Land Rovers. Cheers!
  23. I believe that L&C had to close entries before hand for the RTV, CCV and Comp Safari. Does that indicate numbers are falling? There were over 90 motors in the Comp Safari alone. Yes, it was poor to see not many trade stands and no club shop but I’ll get over it. And aren’t RTV’s suppose to be none damaging? A TYRO should be used to get people interested in our sport driving a nice road car like a Disco that their parents used to tow the caravan there. Regarding moving with the times, isn’t that the drivers responsibility? This year there was a Freelander in the comp, can’t remember seeing any Disco’s but there were some there at the BORC and S&S events. ALRC is a very affordable way to get into racing and people will use what ever they can get hold of. I think it’s just very easy (well, relatively) to build a and maintain a Series 1 than put a Disco back together that’s been accident damaged. E.g. replacing a flat ally panel is a lot easier than finding the exact Disco panel. Hey, this thread was about what people though of the Nationals not what’s wrong with the ALRC! And regarding the suspension, why didn't you just say 'Go and watch the Compers'? Then you see what good suspension does for you. Most are now running Fox's and some Ohlins (And please don't start replying with 'Land Rover didn't fit them!').
