  1. you might want to check out this web site before fitting any bull bars. http://www.frontalprotectionsystems.eu/ ... gister.php They have loads of information about if it is legal or not to have bull bars, the government are having a consultation at the momemnt on bull bar legislation and there is a down load for the presentation they gave at the stakeholders meeting which states that it is illegal to sell them, and that under the road traffic act, the driver may be committing an offence if the vehicle is fitted with a non approved frontal protection system. The consultation will be on this web site when the DfT get around to psoting it. http://www.dft.gov.uk/consultations/open/?w=dft

  3. I just noticed that you were thinking of using your own vehicle, make sure your tyres are up to it, the rocks can be very damaging. by the way, all thier vehicles are fitted with FPS's, the defenders with Landrover ones and the Shoguns with ones from Endura. see here http://www.endura-fps.com/news.php?id=14 and Auto Express are running a competition with them as a prize, see here, http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/interact/auto...ompetition.html
  4. I have been out with them, they have 3 Defender and 3 Shoguns. I don't know how extreme other peoples ideas of extreme are, but if you have never done any real off roading they do take you along some very interesting well paths for want of a better word. I did hve a wheel or two dangling in the air and some quite steep and narrow slopes, but the instructors are pretty good at getting you through it all. Not much mud plugging but it is the lake district and it is very rocky there. I had a great time and could reccomend them.
  5. I have read the Legislation (god that was dull). They don't specify bull bars or a bars, they are all labelled Frontal Protection Systems, and as such and I quote "Frontal Protection Systems are a seperate structure or structures such as a bull bar or supllementary bumper, which is intended to protect the external surface of the vehicle, above and or below the original equipment bumper from damage in the event of a collision with an object, structures with a mass of less than 0.5Kg designed only to protect the lights are excluded from this definition" A winch bumper is ok as long as it does not have an FPS fitted to it, i.e. it is only a replacemnt bumper and does not have any other bar fitted to it. I understand that the reasoning behind this is that such a low number of road going veicles have winches and without an FPS attached, will not increase head and abdomen injuries which is where there majority of deaths and serious injuries (for serious read life threatening) and not many poeple die of broken legs. Actually the fines are max of £20,000 and or 12 months in the clink depending on where the prosecution takes place, i.e. magistrates or crown court. Hope that helps.
  6. People might be interested in this, American litigation culture. If your bar is illegal, you might want to think about what might happen should the worst happen. By the way, I didn't write the article. http://www.youclaim.co.uk/car/bull-bars-an...r-accidents.htm
  7. People might be interested in this regardless of your position on Bull Bars http://www.youclaim.co.uk/car/bull-bars-an...r-accidents.htm
  8. Part numbers for compliant bars are as follows Defender LR005235 (A frame) LR005742 (winch) Disco LR005237 (A frame) LR005743 (winch) Range Rover LR005239 ( A frame) No winch version
  9. .......which is exactly why they are so popular in Australia. Makes it hard to understand why they are so popular in Chelsea though, not many cows around there and not too many places you can drive at 60 mph.
  10. This is my understanding. After the 25th May 2007 it is illegal to sell, or make available for sale any "Frontal Protections System" as it is now known, without an EU approval certificate. (definition of FPS is any structure or structures weighing more than 0.5kg fitted to the front of any N1 or M1 class vehicle above and or below the OE bumper intended to protect the external surface of the vehicle) M1 and N1 class is any passenger vehicle which carries less than 9 people and any light goods vehicle less than 3.5 tonnes. It is NOT illegal to already have one fitted to a vehicle registered before this date. It is LEGAL for you to buy one, if the person selling it to you had it thier possession and can show ownership, i.e. reciept for payment before May 25th and fit it to your car ONLY if it was registered before may 25th. If your vehicle is registered after may 25th You can ONLY fit an EU approved bar. It is not the consumer who will be prosecuted, it is the seller under the general saftey of goods regulations (UK law) Winch bumpers are OK if they do not have an FPS attached, or if they do the FPS Must have a certificate of conformity and be tested to the new regs. in 2010 it will become part of the MoT test that all FPS's fitted to vehicles must have an EU approval and be "e" marked, or the vehicle will fail the MoT Landrover have Approved abrs for the Defender and Disco 3 and Rangerover, but not the Freelander. If anyone needs part numbers let me know as they seem to have forgotten to tell any dealers. We know the numbers because we make them. We also make a legal bar for Freelander from 04-06. (www.endura-fps.com) I think that covers it but if anyone has any more questions I'd be happy to answer them best I can.
