  2. Write to David Cameron and complain that you are being discouraged from contributing to his Big Society due to the lack of interest from Councils to effect repairs etc, with volunteer labour. Or write to the newspapers with the same complaint. John

  7. I have a 2.8tgv. I believe they tend to run warm/hot, when compared to 200/300tdi's. I fitted a high output radiator from Brunel Engineering and kept the viscous fan in use, as an electric one did not provide the required air flow, in the UK when under load. I first noticed overheating towing (about 800kg) up long hills with the electric fan. Also off road progressing at low speed up hill with the wind behind me. When into the wind the temperature dropped to normal. This discovery led me to consider volume of airflow to the radiator, not usually an issue with 200/300tdi's! Given the above I refitted the viscous fan prior to the planned Morocco following advice from simonr, who intimated that the output from a viscous far exceeds that of an electric fan. With this setup there were no overheating issues in Morocco last year at 38 degrees C, either on long off road climbs or in low ratio deep sand conditions, even fully loaded to max GVW (3.5 tons) and possibly in excess of it...   8. From my sources in the insurance industry accident related claims are down 30% this year so far, confirmed by the vehicle repair body shops reduction in repair volumes. The reason is people are driving more frugally to save fuel, leading to fewer close shaves and bumps. Overall motor fuel consumption so far this year is down 14%, so people are making fewer journeys and driving with less haste. The motor insurance should make a killing this year with the higher premiums and lower repair costs. Apparently they have collectively been making losses on their 'motor book' for a number of years. I have also heard that some in the industry are going to put repair work out to tender in future rather than contract renewal , putting the repair sector under further pressure, given that many of the larger volume driven operators do little better than break even. It is the personal injury claims that have been a key factor in the premium increases, pushed by greedy lawyers. That behaviour is nothing new. John

  13. Neill I have OME HD on the rear, 500kg rated. OME on front and OME shocks all round. I went for the HD rears and took off my ARB giving much better ride and frankly not hard, even when empty. In Morocco last year they were excellent, rear was loaded with 2 spare wheels & tyres, one on Mantec door mount, a Southdown tank guard and Nato hitch with a step, MSS store drawer, rear fully packed 2-300kgs of camping and other kit, Hannibal Roof tent + OZTent, 50 litre bulkhead tank, + 70 litres of water in bottles 20 litres of wine etc Mantec fridge, rock/tree sliders Equipe style front winch bumper + 12500 Superwinch, full set of tools and spares, towing and recovery equipment (highlift jack, MaxTrax's, ARB's front and back, overdrive, hardened CV's and half shafts, 2 empty jerry cans in racks on roof, personal effects, food and 4 people. We must have been 3.5t, did not miss a beat in suspension terms. Now I know the score in Morocco, next time I will travel very light, not because we had any weight issues, but because we did not need use half or what we took, having gone belt and braces for the first trip. The more you have the more you have to pack and unpack at each overnight stop, it took a good hour each morning to break camp and load, despite being very well organised. Next time I want this down to 30 minutes, otherwise it it is not a holiday but an endurance test! Frankly a standard vehicle is perfectly able in Morocco, after all the locals have little if any trouble with such Land Rovers and it was a delight to see so many in use compared to the numbers of Japanese products I have seen elsewhere in the Middle East. We travelled with a standard 110 300 Tdi with six on board 2 adults and 4 children, they were able to do and go everywhere I went without issue, partly I suspect because they were half a ton lighter.   18. Don't know about Tangiers, we went in via Cebta, I had green card, my companion 110 had to go to Teoutan to buy local insurance, took some finding even with GPS. John
  19. Neill The key Land Rover garage to be aware of is Redline in Estepona, about 30 miles from Gibraltar. You can google for details. Ian Nash owns it and specialises in Land Rovers. He also goes over to Morocco and competes in some of the events there. Ian is very helpful and if you have any problems, he will help you on your way. If you have AA or similar recovery insurance and have a break down in France/Spain you could be recovered to there for repairs for your onward trip to Morocco. If you have a second policy with another insurer you would still have a get you home to UK card if needed. My 110 breakdown/recovery insurance with the AA for 12 months in Continental Europe cost £110 last April. The 110 I was travelling with needed theirs for a full recovery from Estepona having cooked their engine, with only 3000 miles on the clock- supplied by Nene Overland, who sourced another 110 in Spain to allow their journey to continue.   21. Proves the system works up to a point. Shame the DVLA\Police did not raise the alarm when the eventual new owner registered their name as keeper, unless of course the original owner did not report it as stolen! Still an appalling way for Nene to behave, I wonder what else they get up to? John
  22. Complain to the insurance ombudsman. They appear to want to have everything their own way. I am with the NFU, they gave me green card cover for Morocco without any issues. Without a green card from your insurer you have to buy local insurance. If you go in via Ceuta the nearest town to buy it from is Tetouan about 30 miles away from the border. I also took out recovery with the AA for Europe, (£100) however it does not cover Morocco or Ceuta (the Spanish enclave in Morocco). You will need Moroccan dirhams for the A6 toll road to Tetouan, so unless you have some (can't buy them here) and it's illegal to take it out of the country. Once across the straights you are on your own as far as get you home recovery is concerned. If you have a non repairable failure get your Land Rover back to Algiceras for recovery home from there.
