  1. Does anyone want to comment on just what may be involved in changing over a good Disco body to a good Disco chassis (frame) Thanks; Dave Canada
  2. I read that....old Quentin got it spot on ! (i even went so far as to post a comment)
  3. Jeeze, i would have thought it would give that TD 5 a shot in the "arse"... how could petrol "screw up" a fuel pump, liquid is liquid......worst case scenario, petrol made it's way into the cylinders....... Hope you work it out........!!
  4. I certainly wouldn't argue your advise here Les.... In fact it is informative, but for the novice i would recommend a centering tool, especially on a dark and dreary night, when you need that engine to fit "first time"
  5. You of course are refering to UK Land Rover engines........ the absolute best built V-8 engine ever is the Chev 350 cu. in. The best diesel is the Cummins 400 as supplied in many Dodge North American pick -ups Some how or other the European engine designers never caught on to the idea that a lot of cubic inch/ litre...displacement is the way forward......
  6. Seems like a decent price for what it will do
  7. Hi Stephen; I found the repair pieces quite by accident, they are available from the MPS 4X4 store http://www.mps4x4store.co.uk/about.htm in the UK part number DCRRA @ 36.50 GBp each VAT inclusive.....looks like they will weld right in.......compare that with Land Rover genuine at over 250.00 GBp And yes, most Discos seem to rust at that point.........I'm going to order up a pair and will report later.... Thanks for your input........
  8. Hi All; I think i have this right by calling it the D post it's part numbers STC378 RH and STC379 LH anyway its the bit that the rear door closes against...and forms the front part of the wheel well...my 1996 Disco ones are rusted out out just below the door striker (common i understand)... I think they need replacing by welding new pieces in... Does anyone do aftermarket pieces to repair that area? any leads? Thanks.......
  9. A_ ha! i knew there had to be another name for that unit...because mine is certainly not a radio
  10. Of course it helps see this video http://www.metacafe.com/watch/524517/doubl...gas_mileage_2x/
  11. I've been around a lot of 4.0.... V-8's ( basically the same as a 3.9 ) anyway i've seen these engines abused to the point of pain....... I don't know where you live or what your ambient temperatures are.... but i would consider changing the filter and going over to a single weight oil, SAE 30 for starters and the see what happens next.....If you are in a really warm climate, then go to SAE 40 As a retired pilot, i have had many hours on air cooled engines where at times (many times actually) where we ran on Aero Shell 100.. that is a 50 weight oil........ I know this didn't answer your initial question..but yes, all Land Rover engines have some sort of oil pressure relief mechanism, usually a ball and spring arrangement (check your manual) but in my experience over the years, with many different types of LR engines, this has never been a source of low oil pressure.......... Worst case scenario, if you have a decent running engine.... but the oil pressure thing bothers you...order up a set of new standard crank and con-rod bearings and change what you can in situ.... actually if it were me, .... i'd just change the con-rod shells......... Good Luck with it.......... My BMW connection? I have owned and raced the bikes for over 40 years
  12. Well mate take my advise and service the old girl all the rest will fall in place :)
  13. Not to be a smartass here.... but it would be helpfull if you could tell us what model and year Discovery you drive.......(It's easy to put it in your signature) as for the rollers, i doubt very much they are available separately but a good machinist, with a bit of Teflon stock could build you new ones.......
  14. My two pence worth get a late model 1999 Disco I...all the bugs were worked out by then ........Alternately get a 2004 Disco II (they reinstalled diff-lock in those ones
  15. One of the design criteria for project Jay the Discovery was lots of storage space and on this count i think they did quite well.......but if you must carry heavy tackle, i suggest a "dog guard" screen aft of the back seats, you can fasten a lot of heavy sh*t to that guard..
  16. I agree with Stephen, more than likely a fault in the (official name) Rotary coupler The rotary coupler also controls the horn (hooter .....and the cruise control...so if they are still working it may be another fault but i doubt it........ This rotary coupler is an intricate device which lives beneath the steering wheel......If you have access to the workshop manual or RAVE read up on it........ I had the same problem and bought an used coupler, it came in "not taped in place" I've yet to fit it but i anticipate problems with it........There is a rather complicated way to "reset" it to the correct position as outlined in RAVE....... Anyway not looking forward to doing the job......... Good Luck with yours mate
