  1. Hi I have had 3 occasions recently where the engine power suddenly dies out and the immobiliser light shows on the dash, on all 3 occasions I have been when on the M27 east bound approx 1 mile before the Rownhams services , it cuts out for about 15 seconds then runs ok . All 3 times have been at approx the same place, and with differnet durations and distances and speed of driving before hitting that spot , I never get the problem anywhere else . Does anyone know if the immobiliser can be affected by radio signals , magnetic fields or something like that ? Can I do anything to stop it (other than avoid that part of the M27 !!) as it is pretty dangerous going in the outside lane and then having to try and cut into the hard shoulder. many thanks for any insight Chris
  2. Hi , does anyone have any tips on removing the air con compressor on a P38 diesel ? Looking at the compressor it looks a nightmare to get out , has anyone done this and do they have any easy removal tips ? thanks Chris
  3. sounds like the heat distribution blend motor has gone. Horrid job to do , these links may help :- http://www.rangie.com/articles_topic.php?i...5&subCat=20 http://www.rangerovers.net/repairdetails/blendmotor.html http://www.cunningham.me.uk/rangiewiki/ind...e=Heater_Matrix
  4. Hi The air con compressor on my P38 diesel only has one wire connection , according to the ETM this should be a 12 volt feed for the clutch, is it possible to test the clutch by disconnecting the wire and then connecting a 12v straight from the battery ? , if so I assume the clutch will move back/forward each time I connect and disconnect , is this right ? thanks Chris
  5. Hi Does anyone know what model the air con compressor is for the P38 DSE , I believe they are Sanden but don't the model number. Also , does anyone know if you can fit a different model of compressor , ie off a Rover or suchlike ? many thanks Chris
  6. Hi , does anyone know the part number or the actual size of the air con condenser o'rings for a P38 ? many thanks Chris
  7. Can anyone help with the connctions I need ? 'I have to connect one of the loops to isolate the starter motor circuit and the other loop to another circuit that will immobilise the ignition.' thanks Chris
  8. Hi Bishbosh , thanks for the reply , I don't need it for the insurance this year but have checked that they are ok with it , no problems with them as long as I have it certified by an installer in time for next renewal. cheers
  9. Hi , I have just started installing the thatcham cat 2 immobiliser to my P38 but need some advice, I have to connect one of the loops to isolate the starter motor circuit and the other loop to another circuit that will immobilise the ignition. On my old discovery this wasn't so bad as it didn't have any ECUs, but with the P38 being controlled by the BECM I am concerned about just cutting into any circuit, does anyone have any experience of doing this on a P38 , if so can you advise where or what wires I should be looping ? many thanks Chris ps .. sorry if I seem to asking a lot of questions , I just bought the P38 and am keen to get all of the jobs done asap....
  10. thanks again David , I could only see 3 wires on the old one , I guess the other 2 go under the pcb . btw .. I read your article on the heater o rings , it was a great help as I decided whilst I had the dash etc apart I might as well do them. thanks Chris
  11. Hi , I am in the process of replacing the drivers side temp blend motor the replacement I have is a different part number and appears to be for the recirculation flap , it only has 2 wires whereas the original has 3. I took them both apart and the original has a resistor and additional cog. I read on a website somewhere that the motors are interchangeable but after seeing that this only has 2 wires would it cause a problem ? many thanks
  12. sorted !!! Got underneath today and had a look , it was the lever off the gearbox that the cable connects to, the nut was loose , tightened it up , adjusted the cable and all works fine now. cheers Chris
  13. thanks landroversok , I will check these out later today and let you know, thanks for the ideas. cheers Chris
  14. Hi Ben , appreciate it if you could find the place you got them from. thanks Chris
  15. Hi g-rover ... You can buy them individually but you have to splice them in , also I see you can use a Peugeot blend motor which is more substantial and cheaper . Before going to the expense though I wondered if anyone can confirm my diagnosis . thanks Chris
  16. Ben I notice that Kwik Fit are doing air con re-gassing for £45 , don't know if this includes leak test etc. latest saga with mine is: the re-gas definiitely made a difference to the temperature especially for Hi. I am still having problems with the dreaded aircon so I decided to use the excellent document that David Sparkes wrote as a checklist and carried out a test as per doc then another test 20 minutes later, interesting that I got different results. 1st test : The aircon definitely gets hot, but you have to have it on the Hi setting first , if you then reduce it by degrees it gets cooler until around 24 then it just goes to very cool (but not ice cold) If you have it on Lo then it is just very cool (again not ice cold). Both rocker switches adjust the temperature but not really noticeable. 2nd test 15 mins later : Same as above except the rocker switch for the drivers temp doesn't make any difference until you adjust the passenger side, then both controls adjust the temperature, again not noticeable temp changes unless you select Hi. If I read the ref doc correctly this would suggest that the blend motor(s) is/are kaput ,but would that stop the aircon from getting ice cold and also stop it changing by degrees ? . Before I spend a small fortune on new blend motor(s) can anyone confirm my diagnosis , do I need all 3 blend motors ? thanks Chris
  17. thanks Ben . No it doesn't always engage transmission park , it seems a bit hit and miss , sometimes it is fine others you have to give the lever a bit of a shove so it bangs the 'gate' and then it engages ok. As you say probably (hopefully !!) electrics, maybe an ECU ?? although i would have thought I would have an error showing on the computer, the gearbox seems fine otherwise , it kicks down fine , changes gears smoothly , sport mode works fine etc. It almost seems as though the cable is stretched a bit but I don't know if it has a cable or sensor, as soon as my workshop manual arrives I will strip it down, in the meantime if anyone has any ideas I would appreciate hearing them thanks again. Chris
  18. great thx , I will sort it this evening. cheers Chris
  19. Hi , I am having a few problems selecting Park on my P38 DSE auto , the selector lever moves into Park ok but the red light shows Reverse and doesn't allow it to start. If I give it a bit of a shove it goes in ok but I am worried about damaging it. Has anyone had this problem before ? Any help / ideas appreciated. thanks Chris
  20. Hi Ben ... I was lucky , a friend of mine is the Sales manager at a ford dealership , he got his service dept to do it for the price of the gas, £35 +vat !. Should have been approx £145 if I was 'Joe Public'. Since my last reply the dreaded book symbol came back on this morning after 20 mins or so, when I switch the air con off and back on it then appears again after 10 mins or so , could it be to do with the pollen filters not being in ? Ref the leaves in the filter gaps, I hoovered the whole area and then used an airline to make double sure before taking them out so I don't think I got leaves in but what does happens if you do get them in the gap ? All the airflow is ok , I tested as per David Sparkes articles. cheers Chris
  21. thanks g-rover, I have the RAVE cd but am really after a full workshop manual , something like the Haynes type, RAVE is good but doesn't seem to give the detail that the full books do , the sites suggested by David Sparkes are excellent tho , I guess I can just print those out as I do a job !. cheers Chris
  22. thanks again David , excellent articles, I think I will leave the bulb for now until something else goes that means having to take the dash etc apart !. cheers Chris
  23. Hi Phil , thanks for that. I had it re-gassed yesterday and has made a vast improvement although it doesn't seem as good as the aircon in my wifes Honda Accord. The symbol doesn't show anymore and it definetly gets hot or cold as appropriate whereas before it was hardly any chnage. I checked the pollen filters as suggested , these were completely blocked with muck , almost as black as an oil filter and covered in bits of leaves etc. I have taken these out pending the new ones arriving today/tomorrow. If i set it to Hi it gets nice and hot , if i set it to Lo it gets cold but not ice cold , degrees in between don't seem to make a lot of difference, is this normal for the P38 aircon ? thanks again for your help Philip and David . cheers Chris
  24. thanks for the tip They are now on order cheers Chris
