  1. There is fore-aft slack. causes some axle movement on accel/overrun. I might fit some large washers to pad them out a bit , can't think what else to do really other than find some genuine ones. The 85 onwards ones are not interchangeable, the bushes and chassis holes are bigger I believe.
  2. Just put in new rear radius arm bushes in my 72 Rangie, orderd from a landrover place, but they are aftermarket bushes. I've only done about 100 miles of normal road driving and already they are sloppy, anyone else had bad bushes before? I understand they changed the design of these to bigger ones in 1985.
  3. just noticed I have 2 different door armrests, one type has a scooped out section on the lower half, where the 2 screws go. Anyone know why there are 2 different types or which is early and which is late? Thanks!
  4. I put new rubbers in mine and after a year they are showing signs of cracking , is that normal? Are there good and bad makes?
  5. As expected, apparently it tested fine. They are refusing to refund me, AND they not only have the box, but they have the original one i gave them as core.
  6. Having serious greif getting Power Steering Services http://www.power-steering.co.uk/ to refund my faulty box. They're telling me they've tested it and it seems fine. Now they have my money, and my steering box, not to mention the old one I gave them to start with. The manager was rude and unhelpful on the phone and is basically accusing me of lying about the box. I even told them the paint was coming off in my hands because they had not cleaned the box properly before painting it, and he said I was making it up. that is NOT how to deal with customers and win business. Does it not occur to these people, why would I fit their box, take it off, say its faulty, and go and buy one for twice the money and put that on instead. I even emailed them the receipt at their request. Grr. I know , having a rant but hey. Might stop someone else having the same problem. Oh I forgot, they brought a discovery box the first time , then tried to tell me I had ordered this, rather than they had made a mistake. I've never even owned a discovery! Absolutely shocking. PSS are 'sending the box to somewhere else to get tested' I think we can imagine what they will come back with , watch this space.
  7. theres no way the ecu could let the engine run that high as there wouldn't be enough air available , unless there was a post throttle (manifold etc leak )
  8. Bought a new special light spec box from Adwest. Works great. Lovely steering, perfect weight. Keeps up with fast wheel turning with palm, even at idle. Plenty of flow from Patrol pump it seems. Came with new drop arm too. Well pleased.
  9. Bit of delay getting around to fitting the new box, but it works great. lovely steering, perfect weight. Keeps up with fast wheel turning with palm, even at idle. Plenty of flow from Patrol pump it seems. Came with new drop arm too. Well pleased.
  10. Have you tried it without the steering damper? Personally I don't run one on mine. Was the car ok before you replaced all these parts? The steering box is the next likely part to be causing a bit of stiffness, which may improve a bit as it wears in. I'm about to fit a new Adwest to mine this week.
  11. hardly anything, like another 30 quid! They do quick boxes also, which also have the lighter shaft. So its a case of building a standard ratio box with the light valve body I guess.
  12. Ok I just got intouch with adwest, and I've ordered a brand new steering box! They are building me a special one with a custom torsion shaft for light feel. How good is that? Can't wait!
  13. Exhaust is 2.5 inch, I think at the moment it is fine becuase its running standard fueling and only 7-8psi.. and I think I would struggle to get clearance on a 3 inch pipe on the Range Rover, due to the narrow spaced chassis rails and the fact that the engine and trans I have offset to the exhaust side to fix other clearance issues. Intercooler is already hooked up. I don't need massive amounts of power, I tend to plod around at under 2500rpm so 20-30% over standard N/A would be ok.
  14. Hi yes I am used to steering boxes on the other cars I work on (old stuff) recirculating ball boxes. I checked the thing is central. Its like they've shimmed it up too hard. Its so unpleasant to drive this vehicle now I presume apart from the top screw and locknut (sector shaft endfloat) and the other slotted ring adjustment on the front of the steering box (far end of input shaft) are the only two adjustments possible in situ?
  15. the unis are ok, nearly new, are fine on the rest of the turn, and were fine on the old box, and also I have a rubber doughnut inline (from late model) to prevent any problems from pressure pushing on the UJs. FYI the rated pressure for the Patrol pump (according to the workshop manual) is 1250-1340psi at idle. The rated force to turn steering wheel when straight ahead on Patrol is 2-4KG at circumference. Are rangie boxes variable ratio or same ratio throughout turning range? Patrol ones are variable.
  16. Ok, a box arrived from Power Steering Services. Whilst it was still sitting on the floor I connected a UJ to the input shaft and tried to turn it, very stiff, and when it moved it felt rough and notchy. I rang them and asked them to send another one, which they did, after a little sighing. Second one felt a bit smoother but still quite tight but I decided to install it just incase it sorted itself out. Installed, bled, test driven, feels horrible. Very tight. Steering is heavy in the middle position then goes lighter once you get a bit of a turn going. This is unpleasant. It also won't self centre when you let the caster do its job . The wheel is stiff and stays where you put it, which makes precise adjustments to straight line driving a real chore. I have tried losening the sector shaft endfloat adjuster a little but this just made it have play but still stiff to turn. I am going to have to buy a new box and be done with it probably , as I don't want to ask this place for a third one, nobody should have to do that. Wonder what they will say when I ask them to take this box back and give a refund.
  17. Got recon box now. Might bung it on tomorrow if I can get the old droparm off!
  18. Ah that's what I'd expect to see, thanks. I've done a temporary fix by cutting some 10mm thick 'washers' out of rubber sheet and put them in.
  19. http://www.polybush.co.uk/shop/view/23_Part_Kits/30_Rear_Radius_Arm_to_Chassis seen this but not sure how they fit, do you reuse the metal piece of the original? Bit confused.
