  1. yeah sorry dude, thanks for clarification, it was more explaining the fact that i have changed the diffs and the transfer ratio, to end up with the same overall ratio in high range but a different propshaft rpm for given road speed thus will need to mess about with speedo gears again
  2. Detroit Unlocker is fundamentally different to an ATB of course. And any type of locking diff will never have the infinite adjustability and versatility of an ATB, although an air locker which functions at both extremes also works well for most people
  3. ^^^^ yeah the Detroit rear/Truetrac front is a common fitment The main benefit being fit and forget and automatic action The main gripe with Detroit is it is an Unlocker technically, so is always locked, which could in the worst case scenario provide undesirable rear axle characteristics, ie muddy side slope it will promote more wheel slip and hence sideways axle slip, the benefit of being unlocked is you are allowing the wheels to seek out maximum traction and not promoting them to break it, like any locked diff does. Helical type/Torsen diffs really are the best all rounder, and from then each diff type can be accurately placed along a scale, trading between not forcing wheels to break traction at the open diff end and not allowing wheels to give away/waste any available drive at the welded/locked/spool diff end...
  4. As long as you have a good electrical connection they will manage, only bad connections get hot, even with regular bulbs I run 100w bulbs with replacement wiring on my 200 disco (original electrics are highly substandard) so they definitely receive full amps and they do not get too hot 100w bulbs are noticeably better that 55w.
  5. Diff cover would be fine, but it could be a pain when removing cover, on that basis I'd look elsewhere! Plenty of other places on the diff casing that could work?
  6. 20t units are popular, many people buy them after fitting big tyres, myself for example However now fitting different ratio diffs and changing the transfer case ratio AGAIN it's time for another rethink!
  7. Hi mate, I have a pal who has/had a series and it was good fun in rwd Yeah I look forward to testing it myself, but it will be a while yet as it still need a mountain of cash for another Ashlocker, some rear shafts and MAYBE some CVs seeing as I'm at it I might aswell finish the job. Could really do with some discount, nudge nudge wink wink Dave
  8. Hi Dave Ah right thanks for clearing that up, so not quite a fit and forget solution like an ATB. Cheers, Sam
  9. ^^^ thanks for that Not what I wanted to hear but puts my mind at rest I'm getting like 500 miles mixed on/off road out of the upper joint I also assume it is simply drying out the joint. Anyway that's modifying for you
  10. Yes it will be because the direction of airflow is the same (into the engine bay) so the fan will spin it's normal direction
  11. Any locking type is better than open. Yes they tend to make themselves known to some description so just see how you get on Test it out on some muddy twisty stuff and see what happens
  12. ^^^ indeed and it is very well priced, but there is no provision for locking in their setup, whereas kam could have that solved. Needs research but kam do require a lot of casing mods so that might allow it!
  13. I badly want to make some smart comment about LEDs being diodes so 'can't you sort it out using the led itself' sort of thing but I got to bed far too late last night so I'm a bit brain achey. Also Donald did your springs turn up?
  14. Not wishing to sound like one is blowing ones own trumpet for choosing to fit this diff, but yes ATB units really are very good. I think perhaps KAM do an ATB with locking function for the axle diff That would be very swish! When you say self locking, do you mean a Detroit?
  15. Yeah you could prove to be right. I am in a situation where I am not in any huge rush or budget to finish the build so I am looking to future proof things The stock diff is an open diff and all open diffs are no good period. It has a locking function however so that is good. That said, whilst open it apparently has fairly serious weakness issues that may or may not rear their heads in the long term, I don't know. As such, fitting an ATB suits my current position, will be better in all ways that stock, and is still fully lockable. To me, this makes it a win win and something that I would have been foolish not to fit considering the vehicle is currently open endedly "in for rebuild" until all transmission weaknesses have been removed
  16. Me too I've got a wide angle cheapo front prop that has never been split at the spline portion, yet I've had around 5 upper ujs in it although still on original lower I put it down to my non stock v8 exhaust being very close to the upper UJ and making it uncomfortably warm It is at a much greater angle than the lower unit though My props are off as we speak so I must check
  17. Better had not do! Bishbashboshed plenty of sealant on this one to try and prevent it
  18. Viscous is auto locking as such but only through the viscous action. Ashcroft unit is lockable, it is externally identical to factory unit!
  19. No but the BW out of a classic for instance Yes they work and many prefer them But the lt230 is more versatile, much stronger and with an ATB fitted better performing. Plus, can you lock BW? The quick fix for a comp safari guy is a viscous unit, the proper fix is an ATB in an lt230 Just lucky Ashcroft made this unit at sensible price, quaife version is around £1200
