  1. understood, Mog; that wasn't my personal views, though, it was my considered judgment cheers
  2. I try to bite my lip, however I just have to say this: the kind of abuse of authority that is really disgusting I dare say the real reason for the prosecution is that press reports 'father is prosecuted' are less embarrassing than 'police utterly fail to do diddly squat' van drivers need clamping down on - in fact I'd go so far as to include drivers of the more offensively designed 4wd's such as the BMWs, Nissans etc. A higher-level driving test should be in order really. That's without speaking of the rental vans.. the dangerous driver was driving a minibus - similar case to the vans really - , pulling a trailer of boats sounds as though it wasn't hire/reward, so basically after passing a mere car test before 1997. It looks as though there is confusion in the reference to Gresh 'passing' the minibus, I had understood they were going in opposite directions, not that I want to start a discussion on a matter that is sub judice, although it looks as though the ambiguity of a word is part of the cause for subjecting a family to such mistreatment, terrible. Clearly a man who had driven his large family in his Land Rover for so many years is not a dangerous driver! Disgusting charging him with that, in the hopes of a careless driving conviction that would, whatever the facts, be unnecessary for a man who has suffered so much already. As for the cps, what a load of idiots. I hope the judge throws the case out of court with a few well-picked words for the cps, who are literally, as is often the case, adding insult to injury.
  3. No, definitely, nuking people is mainly more emotive than practical: similar to making them choke on the money they've been stealing from you.. you want to hear a really practical suggestion? How would we try to make an electric Land Rover? Is it feasible for such a heavy vehicle? Store the power underneath, replace the transmission with 4 individual motors, etc; although it's more of a job for an engineer than an enthusiast.. were it not for the fact I'm trying to earn money to afford spiralling fuel prices that I consider a kind of protection money as keeping the Land Rover is the most effective way of keeping my family safe from dangerous drivers, I would try to build one myself.. cheers
  4. So, a bit more in-depth research indicates: It's not so much OPEC who are the baddies, as OAPEC [traditionally, though currently it's mainly speculators], an overlapping group [the A stands for Arab], although Iran is in OPEC not OAPEC; OPEC includes countries such as Nigeria [who are currently increasing production to limit price rises], Venezuela, etc; an OPEC meeting in December 2007 aimed to set a price of $70-80 per barrel this year! the Iraq invasion may have, in fact, caused peak oil production earlier than would normally have happened, although the effect of retaining Iraq's reserves may ease the pain of post-peak price rises; perhaps giving us sufficient time to adapt to alternative energies? The chinese in fact subsidize their oil, disgusting! Subsidies affordable as a result of a population kept in virtual slavery.. An EIA report stated that OPEC member nations were projected to earn a net amount of $1.251 trillion in 2008 from their oil exports, as a result of the current crude prices so the question is, how many solid gold rolls-royces [earned from keeping the whole world's population in economic slavery] do you need to withstand a 1-Megaton warhead? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peak_oil http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oil_price_increases_since_2003 then there's the governments; without the duty increasing as well, a doubling of oil prices should lead to a 25% increase in pump prices in Europe.. then there's the oil companies, who seem eager to put prices up at every opportunity Maybe we should simply nuke everyone who seems to sympathise with oil slavery? Advantages: plenty of oil for the few who are left, etc..
  5. [i apologise in advance to those who may be offended, however the price of fuel is seriously offending me:] Not all that subtle; couldn't we equally 'subtly' turn the fact that we've got nuclear weapons to our advantage? to save your family from kidnappers, you wouldn't hesitate to send in the SAS; to save your economy from being held to ransom what was the point in developing nukes after all? So Iraq was badly planned; next time, don't send in ground troops, just nukem from the air.. it seems to me that talk of 'the level of demand' presupposes that the chinese [who have nukes as well, let's not ignore them then ] rate of fuel duty is as high as it is here in Europe, else they're getting their [our] fuel cheap by comparison; basically all the main fuel consumers have nukes, none of the OPEC nations have nukes yet we hope, are we going to wait until at $500 per barrel we're sending $1.5 billion to Iran every day? Eventually $1000 per barrel -> $3 billion per day
  6. Hydrogen though I seem to think there was a compressed air 2cv limited range town car built a few years back, perhaps prototype/s of the Onecat; you would have to say that the relative weight of a land rover makes it a different business; The advantages of a self-compressing air system include the 'even [non-peak] power distribution' that assists the energy consumption of hybrid fuel/electric motors It would seem that really the technology we'll see most developed is: stage 1 hybrid fossil fuel / electric stage 2 electric stage 3 hydrogen electric every stage feeds the subsequent stage with lower-cost components cheers
  7. There are quite a few articles there; very fascinating I had been thinking of this since a news item in France recently: http://www.ecopra.com/home/index456.html for those who understand It looks as though they've put their prices up since the news item.. One more lot - in the UK - quite pricey too, are http://www.aquamist.co.uk/sl/plist/frm-4.html one of the autospeed articles seemed to think that spraying water on the intercooler was the most efficient, least risky answer - with a sufficiently economical kit, I suppose that would be similar to investing in a very large intercooler? John, would you think you could possibly make improvements such as better atomisation, more water, water better directed at the intercooler, that could feasibly lead to better results? cheers
  8. well it was more feasible in France as kids of 16 are allowed to ride cyclomoteurs, up to 50cc, no plates etc - in fact I got the kit [not the mudguards, they were from a French bike shop] from the States, I think they're allowed to ride such contraptions on the pavements unless local city regulations prohibit it, no type approval EuroNcap crash test stuff there, in the league of petrol-powered pavement scooters yeehah!
  9. I have to correct you there: [French law although I think the UK is stricter] I got a whopping €11 fine [equal to the standard parking fine in France] for adding a 4hp motor to a bicycle; it would have been alright, save that the mudguards I got from a bike shop didn't have nyloc holding them in place, while the motorisation caused a few vibrations; the front mudguard then hooked underneath the front wheel, I went flying briefly, luckily wearing a helmet, straightened the tooth myself, the gendarmes told me it was a good idea, just not legal [needs type approval]
  10. Clarkson reviewing the Mitsubishi Outlander "I do not have much time for people who get dressed up in camouflage clothing and take to the countryside in their Land Rovers to see who can get most covered in mud. This is known as “green laning” and it’s as ridiculous as pushing a kettle over a frozen lake. I wouldn’t want to stop them doing it, though, partly because they’d all be at home otherwise, downloading unusual images from the internet" particularly the last comment, has he been reading this forum?
  11. one more occupational hazard in a land cruiser:
  12. In the end it was the main grouped cable going to the gearbox that had got chewed when refixing the bellhousing to the engine! All's well now though cheers
  13. Cheers Jim, that definitely sounds worth looking into then
  14. After changing the clutch [removal of gearbox+transfer box], I'm not so sure that all the electrical connections were put back right. Most crucially, the speedometer isn't reading at all; it temporarily caused the whole dash panel to stop reading - fuel, revs, temp, warning lamps - although that was "merely" a fuse.. now to try to get the speedometer reading properly, I've noticed that the reversing lamps don't, neither does the dash panel diff lock indicator lamp [although the latter didn't work when I got the vehicle] As I recall there were 3[4] connections; 2 multi-plugs, plus a set of 2 individual little connections. Normally I suppose the individual little connections would be the reversing lamp + the diff lock lamp One multi-plug close to the handbrake drum, perhaps handbrake indicator/wear lamp.. One other multi-plug I'm not sure I remember where it went, could be gearbox fluid level / temp? I suppose newer transfer boxes are electronic diff locks, although would that be self-contained? Mechanic isn't too sure what the various plugs are, so I suggested checking up with the specialists before taking time undoing the whole business to check plugs - it's really only the little connections that are hard to reach, the multi-plugs look as though they're connected properly could anybody clarify what the various plugs are, or whether it's a [different] fault they recognise please - such as fried speedo, ecu speedo circuits etc ps there was no specific earth connection to the boxes, I suppose the housings earth to the engine then.. cheers
  15. it was the fork in the end; central pivot point had sheared open a whole heap of work for an £8 part, I think I've heard the chorus before "they should make them stronger, next time it's worth adding a bit of reinforcing weld" although it seems I had mainly heard of woes with the V8 fork, not necessarily the 300tdi one
  16. sounds as though it's your cookie settings is it Firefox? then you need to set cookies to keep indefinitely Internet Explorer? look for similar settings
  17. I'll just say 'P' is much better than 'c' in my view - they all make mistakes [most of us do occasionally], although they[P]'re prepared to make good the way c don't seem to - of course you need to speak to the right person whatever happens.. I think that involves making telephone calls rather than Emails either way
  18. well, upon further inspection, the actuating rod is less than 3mm proud of the housing, with really very gentle pressure; I now think however, before replacing the fork, that the fact that the little clip that's supposed to hold the rod to the fork doesn't, could be part of the difficulty; however it looks as though it's an up-on-the-ramp-with-an-inspection-lamp job at least, so I'll speak to my friendly local mechanic.. cheers
  19. quality photography there Les, your camera must be covered in grease! that is very similar to what I noticed that discouraged me from completing the task; so it looks as though it wasn't as ominous as I had initially considered, I'll try today - I had already ordered a set of <ahem>britpart</ahem> so that'll have to do for now, it did save me more than €100 per cylinder though! thanks chaps
  20. after a bit of a saga waiting for a set of cylinders from paddocks - ordered 3 days before christmas closing, no Email/call to say not in stock, eventually the courier sent the parcel to Dublin for a holiday - I now think it's the clutch fork, although possibly the master cylinder was going too.. there was no obvious fluid leaking at all, so hopefully the damper's alright I need to double-check I'm thinking right; symptoms were - initially the pedal just 'dropped' to the floor, all of a sudden - virtually no resistance to the pedal even after replacing the master & bleeding - removed slave, piston wasn't returning to 'empty', cylinder was full of fluid after removal, a bit clogged although not terrible - the actuating rod only stuck out < 1 cm from the housing when checking the action [relatively gentle manual pressure] - I think I felt the [actuating side of the] fork, it went backwards with virtually no resistance as far as I know, that's the clutch fork? cheers
  21. clutch suddenly stopped working this morning, virtually no resistance, I think it's the master cylinder, so I've ordered a set of cylinders although the clutch damper is a new one for me - would it have seals that could blow? cheers Mark
  22. Thanks chaps, I think I'll put 6220kg then, just in case I ever need to tow a big trailer assuming that for a 4 tonne trailer the modification to allow coupled brakes would need adding to the registration according to the French system cheers
  23. Thanks Steven, that sounds right at least; now I just need the towing weight.. I'm thinking 3500kg although should it be 2720+750=3470? cheers
  24. Hi there everyone, please could you help me? I need the plate weights to register in France; no sign of actual weights on the actual plate so far searching indicates gvw = 2720kg max including trailer = ? front axle = 1200kg rear axle = 1650kg apparently, even when they're not properly labelled, these are the 4 weights in order on all EEC plates, so perhaps a kind person could check theirs.. power = 93kw? the power figure is from a defender 300tdi, =111bhp, not necessarily original power; I just need the 'factory' wattage of a standard disco 300tdi cheers Mark
