  1. I've had the same thing. I have had fuel oil "wicking" up the wiring and tipped half a cup full out of the ECU! I teased the wiring harness apart rinsed it off with contact cleaner. I also opened the ecu and rinsed that out around the socket. Its done forty thousand since without missing a beat. I do wash out the ECU socket at every service though. Takes all of a minute or two. I also degrease the engine and under the acoustic cover fairly often. I must get round to changing the harness and ECU sometime.............I'm doing a thousand a week , month in month out so its had a fairly good thrashing since.
  2. I've recently had exactly the same noise with my 220000 miles + TD5. It was in and out of the workshop for weeks while I checked everything out. Heater fan, hoses, blown joints were all suspects before I tracked it down to end float in the turbo. Changed it for a cheapish Craddock one problem solved! Try that before you set about demolishing everything else!
  3. Thanks for that Rob, 64 dollar question.. where to go to get a first rate remap? any ideas? Geoff
  4. Thanks for your reply. Done all that. The vehicle is fine except tfor the flat spot. Its most odd. Runs like a watch at low and high rpm, skin off a rice pudding on hills. Be embarrasing to refit the egr stuff!
  5. I run a 2001 TD5 ES Auto Disco which is a really good workhorse. It recently need a new turbocharger so I fitted a brand new one and took the opportunity to throw away the EGR pipework using an Allisport kit. It is a little quicker off the mark now and will cruise faster than before. It turns in really good mpg and does'nt smoke. So far so good. However its now very flat mid range and paddles up and down the gearbox on any respectable hill. It did'nt before. I use this vehicle for long distance towing and find the constant loss of power a real pain. I suspect that a larger intercooler and a chip upgrade would sort it. What does everyone think? Does anyone have experience of this upgrade and who would anyone recommend ? I'm just looking for grunt on hills. There does'nt appear to be anything wrong with the engine. It was only a whining turbo that caused me to get the tools out!
  6. Just a thought..is your intercooler clean?...ages ago I washed mine out and it made quite a difference all round
  7. My TD5 Auto has done over 170000 now and is still turning in a steady 30mpg. I regularly tow 2 tonnes and turn in 22/23 mpg then. So if yours is fully laden I don't think you are doing quite as well... maybe you have more hills or a heavier foot!
  8. My 2001 TD5 Auto Disco had a sudden gearbox failure without any warning at 150000 miles..was driving well moments later it wasn't .It had thrown most of the transmission fluid out, what was left was black..well cooked. My local dealer fitted a service exchange box. job done. Now 25000 miles later the new box is working fine but has started making a squealing noise which has grown from being first gear only to all four gears. It only does it after a period of drifting followed by brisk acceleration. Plenty of oil..still clean and red with no signs of overheat. Anyone got any ideas? I'm concerned because of the short life of this box and because of the abrupt failure of the old one. My old auto Disco 1 has done 400000 trouble free miles on the original gearbox so is the Disco 2 more prone to failure and what is the cause? Thanks
  9. My 2001 TD5 Auto Disco has now done 165000 miles ..many of them towing and still returns a steady 31mpg. The only time it dropped below that is when the intercooler was clogged up post paddling in a bog. Cleaned it inside and out and its been fine ever since
  10. My air sprung Disco Td5 is prone to becoming lop sided. It levels up fine when elevated but continually runs an inch low on one side when used normally. I suspect the ride height sensor is playing up and have bought a new one. Before I fit it is there any dodges to avoid using Testbook ?. Will it have to be reset or is there a clever cheat?
  11. I've just carried out a major service on my TD5 Disco 2 and have changed the rotor filter. The disco runs fine but on run down ,after switching the engine off, the rotor filter emits a noticable rumble. I've heard noise from the rotor filter before but this time its loud enough to attract the attention of passers by. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it anything to worry about?. Its a genuine LR filter not an aftermarket item.
  12. Just carried out a major service on my TD5 Disco and changed the rotor filter. No obvious problems but the rotor filter makes a quite loud rumbling noise on run down after the engine is turned off. The old filter was audible but the new one is a real howler. Any one else had this ? Should I worry about it? Its absolutely silent when the engine is running.
  13. My TD5 auto has developed an irritating fault with the SLS suspension system. Nothing serious and the first I've had in 136000+ miles. When towing ( up to 3 tons off road) it levels perfectly. When running in raised mode its also level side to side. When running solo it tends to run 25mm low on the near side rear which results a a small drift to the near side. There are no air leaks and every thing is in good order as far as I can tell. Any ideas? I'm reluctant to let the local main agent any where near it as 'er in doors whines when I have to sell off one of the kids to pay the bill. My friendly local independant has'nt got Testbook and I'm at a loss to know how to check the system out or what the problem is. I'm dragging the caravan down to Italy very soon and would love to get this sorted first...without resorting to the rip off main agent if it can possibly be avoided!..and no..I don't want springs instead!
