So, doing that is a 'thing' then My oil is changed every few months, but the 110 is fairly new to me - even so, I was surprised by the sludge

Having changed the oil cooler pipes recently on my 300tdi, when the bottom hose was disconnected, the oil was sludgy and thick.... Its definitely worth a flush out of the oil cooler while the pipes are off.
