  1. As above, don’t sell unless you absolutely have to. Think about it, say you sold it for £7,000 and bought a used car. After five years the car would be practically worthless, unless you are lucky and buy something collectible. Where your Landy after five years will likely be worth.....£7,000, more if you’ve improved it. A galvanised chassis always adds a fair bit to the value as it addresses the major worry on old Land Rovers, chassis corrosion. l think the silly prices being paid (or asked) for newer ones will come back down to earth , but you’ll always get over £5,000 for a nice Defender TDi/TD5.
  2. Keep it. You won’t get another like that for the money it will likely sell for. The thing is, you fixed the major issues and you know the Landy so are aware of what else is needed. At the moment you won’t get back what you have paid out. But if you keep it, and sort the bodywork, it will only go up in value.
  3. £2,000.....seriously? You say it’s on a galvanised chassis? I would put the value at £6,000, more on a good day. You can’t get one with an MOT for under £5,000 round here. Show me the “similar ones at £2,000” and l’ll hire a flatbed and buy them all.
  4. Ah right my mistake....l didn’t read it properly! Yes it’s unlikely that the manufacturer of the headlining would know that! It would be something you’d need to buy, and then see how it fitted.
  5. The O/P is still active on here so he may be able to update this. However It’s not a good start if the supplier doesn’t know how it fits on to the vehicle.

  7. Anything l should know? Does the actuator rod come out with the cylinder or is it attached inside. ls there a chance of it falling into the bellhousing?
  8. Remove the dash panel with the speedometer and other gauges (four screws and it’s off) They are are held in by a large plastic locking ring that you unscrew.
  9. Remember that the Land Rover was made for this kind of task in standard specification, and as long as the vehicle is in a good state of repair when you set off, it will complete the journey with no difficulty.
  10. The string method if done carefully can work very well.
  11. Well if it’s the FRONT wheels that show a 15mm difference then it could just be that your tracking is out. Why not take it into a tyre fitter and get the tracking checked, it will at least eliminate that as an issue.
  12. I can’t see how one rear wheel can be out of line, as it’s a straight forward live axle with no adjustments possible. You could adjust the alignment of the axle but it would alter the other side as well. Unless the offset of the front/rear wheel is somehow incorrect, such as if you fitted a spacer behind the wheel. If the whole axle was located incorrectly (maybe due to accident damage) then it would surely show on the other side as well. But he says the other side is fine.
  13. Well, it’s gone in today for new oil seals and a new nose seal on the front diff as that’s leaking too. l replaced the rear one myself some time ago, but they may as well do it while it’s on the ramps.

I thought that wheel wobble at higher speeds was caused by wheel imbalance? l drove a Fiesta last week where the steering wheel shook quite violently in your hands at speeds over about 35 mph As the front tyres were nearly bald l told the owner to get two new tyres, this cured the fault completely
  15. No after the horror that was replacing the rear discs, l’m going to let the garage do it.

  17. So is it worth paying to get the suspension dismantled to repair this fault? Or will it be fine to just forget about it. I’m guessing there’s going to be a bill for over £200 if l get it done. Somebody has said that some people don’t even fit the seals and let the axle oil lubricate the swivels!
  18. Well the swivels and seals are fairly new. lt’s not leaking a lot of oil, certainly a lot less than before the swivels were changed
  19. Looks like it, as the swivel is full of axle oil and the axle oil is contaminated with swivel grease.

If it wasn’t leaking out of the swivel seal l would leave it, but it’s leaking oil onto the inside of the tyre. l am happy to pay them for the work if it’s nothing to do with replacing the swivels. After all, the Landy is 14 years old and has done over 100,000 miles so l would expect some issues to crop up from time to time.
  21. Well, as the swivels were replaced last year l am going to let the garage who did the work have a look at it. As it’s only done around 10,000 miles since.
  22. I decided to refill the swivels with grease (on my TD5 Defender) One side was OK it took about half the tube of grease but the other side was full of axle oil. So l take it the seal between the axle and swivel has failed. But do l need to do anything about it? I checked the axle and the oil level was fine although it clearly has been contaminated with swivel grease. So l changed the axle oil anyway. The swivels themselves are OK, they were replaced about 18 months ago by a LR garage. The swivel that’s full of axle oil is leaking a little (l think that’s why they changed to grease?) but not enough to be an issue.

The pedal box pivots are all worn (on my 2005 Defender TD5) and the master cylinder needs changing. l have been offered a new complete clutch pedal box from a Defender TDCi (from a company who do auto conversions) Will this fit my TD5? I am told that the master cylinder is the same for TDCi/TD5/TDi But what about the pedal box assembly?
  24. Yes that’s happened round here. You can take steps to make it harder for the thieves, but the best thing is to make sure you have Agreed Value insurance. Then if it does go, at least you will get the proper value. The “book” prices for Defenders are well below what you actually have to pay, and that’s in the Land Rover magazines! And the insurance company will refer to the “book” which says you can get a mint TD5 for £8,000 Not quite! Although the silly prices being asked by chancers on some auction websites can be ignored.
