  1. Stumbled across this conversation while looking for recommendations on trolley jacks. Can only add if you are overlanding then a hi lift is a necessity as a bottle jack won't do when bogged down, though agree they are dangerous and should not be used unless you have experience, main thing is to make sure you lock the handle once you reach the right height and you keep them well greased, also much easier to use if you get the adapter to slot into the holes on heavy duty bumpers.
  2. Thanks guys for the input, did consider the big bores and stupidily forgot to bid on a new pair on Ebay which went off recently at around £60, can't see any now for less than that for just one and for that sort of money after reading earlier comments I might prefer to try Koni? Haven't checked the Bilsteins with Paddocks yet but will do so after this. If no go looks like the best bet will be to put Armstrongs on for now and upgrade if we decide to go back to bush bashing! Cheers Pete
  3. Interested in this thread as I need to replace a rear gas shock to get through the MOT and wondering what to get? Almost went for Terrafirma TF117s till I read some bad comments, also considered Monroe Adventurer Gas but believe their extended length is 558mm which maybe just a little short for my 130, so now looking at black Bilsteins at Paddock's? My 130 has twin rear shocks each side, one gas, one oil. The gas ones were fitted in Tanzania after a 500km journey over very rough roads broke the Landy standard oil ones (plus a front shock), the landy was heavily laden in those days. Over the years I replaced the other oil shocks with standard Armstrongs which we carried as spares and they are still ok but the old gas ones now need to go. The Landy is now back in the UK unpacked and only doing on road trips so until we decide whether or not to take him back to Africa we just need decent but not too expensive on road shocks so thoughts/recommendations would be much appreciated. Thanks
  4. Well the saga continues, eventually managed to get the wiper motor out and fitted a new Bearmach one from Paddocks plus new wheelboxes but then the wipers would not park. Fiddling with the old motor got that working again and with that the wipers park ok so thought the new motor must be faulty, sent it back to Paddocks for refund a month ago but still waiting their suppliers findings that they agree it is faulty. As it's a real hassle removing the AC panel I thought it best not to risk just putting back the old motor and then it packing up again in short order and rather than try again with another Paddocks one I decided to get my local Landy garage to fit what they claim is a better type, not as expensive as a genuine LR part but a bit more expensive than the Bearmach but after a month's wait this is still on back order! Is there a world shortage on decent wiper motors! Luckily the Landy is not needed at the moment but I just want to get this sorted and done with! To cap it all the rear offside door lock is now jammed tight and yesterday I broke the up button trying to free it, so now have to try removing door panel while still in the shut position which I don't think is going to be easy but let's see, I'm sure the Landy is getting his own back for bringing him back to the cold, wet carp we call British weather!.
  5. Many thanks Ralph for confirming the part type and the tips. So from what you say I have to take out the instrument panel to access the screws on the dash structure holding the base. Mine has two one on each side with the screw heads facing inwards (you can just see the right hand screw thread at the bottom of the cowl on the first pic), I haven't removed the dash console yet but presume I will be able to get to the screw heads through the forest of wires? Once the wheel boxes are out are you suggesting a re-grease will probably do the trick rather than the need to replace them, if so I wish I had done this when the motor seemed to still been working as it looks like a big job to to remove the AC panel so I can get to the motor! Cheers Peter
  6. HI All Ok so I have removed the dash and this is what I can see (pic 1), the wheelbox on the passenger side is easily accesible but the one on the drivers side is obscured by the air vent cowl and it looks like I can only take it out if I remove the whole instrument panel which I'm wary of doing. I think I can just get a spanner on the wheelbox without the need to do that but is that the way it's normally done? Also the existing wheel box that's fitted in pic 2 does anyone know if that is a PRC8495 version or a DKU500010 one as the pictures of both that I've found online look different i.e. they seem to have just one whole centre piece clamping the pipe not two side pieces or is mine just an old version? What is the difference in the two parts anyway? Unfortunatley I cannot use my chassis number to check compatibility as it is an export one SALLDHAV etc and from experience the databases don't recognise that? Pic 3 shows the problem I have getting at the wiper motor, bloody annoying just to get at two screws but will have to make a plan when it comes to that bit, the wipers are now completley dead no sound from the motor or anything when I switch on (fuse is ok though and I can hear the relays click) so assume I have a blown motor but thinking I should change the wheel boxes as well. As I say never had to look at the wiper mechanics before so all help/suggestions would be most welcome Cheers Peter
  7. I drove my 130 round Africa everyday for six years including big cities like Nairobi which is a traffic mad house so if you can handle that driving in the UK is a doddle but even so now I'm back I have decided to get either parking sensors and/or a rear camera fitted as I'm finding reversing with just the wing mirrors is too tricky here as people are less patient and try to squeeze past you. Cheers Peter
  8. Hi All, I'm new to the forum looking for some advice on a problem with the wipers on my Defender 130. To explain the vehicle has been in Africa for the past six years mostly in dry hot conditions so the wipers weren't used that often but when needed we never had any problems even after the Landy was idle for a few months at a time. We brought him back to the UK earlier this year but being a big lad he's not that user friendly for driving round town on shopping trips so he currently spends most days parked up on the driveway. Just recently I discovered the wipers had stopped working no movement whatsoever, fuse was ok so I assumed the wiper motor must have packed up but then when I wiggled one of the blades a few times the wipers suddenly starting working again but once switched off would not work again. Tried them a few times and each time could only get them moving by lifting the blades off the screen and wiggling one from side to side, however even that isn't working anymore. The problem I have is I cannot easily get at the motor to see if it's trying to work as we had AC fitted before going to Africa and that now completley blocks access to the bottom screws on the dash below the grab handle so is it possible to just remove the top of the fascia to see what's going on with the linkage and wheel boxes, I've never looked at how the wipers work before so not sure how practical this is? Thanks Peter
