  1. The old police training was to read traffic conditions, junctions and lights in advance, with the aim of not arriving at them carrying excess speed and having to waste energy on braking, but rather anticipate the conditions, keep moving and in the appropriate gear to accelerate away. Also means that when you arrive at the junction you're not swapping gears or braking and are free to react. More to do with keeping the vehicle in a balanced state of control than keeping traffic flowing. There was a lot of mention in the manuals about preserving clutch/brakes but it's also the best way to follow people going very quickly 🙂
  2. If you change the HG then add water in the expansion tank you'll get an airlock as the thermostat is shut and you're just filling the rad.
  3. Great way to increase your chances of a roll-over, also a great way to find yourself upside down crimped shut in the cab by a tangle of bent scaffold while the flames lick round your feet..😄
  4. Wildcard here (my first thoughts would be set up timing meticulously) - I had a baffling problem with my 200 slowing down uphill, sometimes conking out, then getting back to normal after restarting. After stripping the entire fuel system several times, I found a small plastic bead from f knows where in the fuel tank had found its way up the pickup pipe. Under max throttle up hill, the filter housing would empty as couldn't replenish itself quickly enough. As a quick test you could backflush the fuel line with compressed air.
  5. Resistors are used to reduce voltage or current in a circuit - could be there to reduce the ~14v input to the transducer to a more desirable 12v to the ecu, or just a little current protection, or to smooth the signal flow.
  6. Looks like it has LR special vehicles badges painted over. Otherwise standard civvy spec white fleet. I've bought similar stuff in the past, used by airfield security guards, admin cars used on salisbury etc, and one was used by QintetiQ on the test ranges. That one looks like its got new rear radius arms (still got labels on), so might have had a little rear end axle mishap and they've chucked on whatever was left in the stores.
  7. The 3.9 speed transducer is cable operated - a short speedo cable runs from the speedo drive on transfer box into one side of transducer, a longer cable comes out the other side and into speedo as normal - just keep the standard speedo The transducer is used to regulate idle at low speed from memory - I've done the same instalation without a transducer and all was well, maybe a little fidgety when dropping to idle when getting to traffic lights etc.
  8. Ordinarily the cheapest way would be to container ship one, but shipping prices have gone through the roof this year - four or five times higher than last year! But worth looking at some of the Facebook groups for greek shipping and transport and expat groups as may be able to share a container or transport. RoRo could also be an option. There are plenty of late 2 doors in France, Spain, Italy & Portugal that will be easier to get back - I don't think there will be many road transport companies running to Greece, but I've had cars picked up in Italy and France easily enough, though also not so easy at the moment.
  9. I don't think this lectric thing will take off. It's becoming clear that the human population is nearing saturation point, and could easily be dealt a severe blow by natural disaster, disease or war leaving infrastucture in tatters, resources depleted or lack of sufficiently talented people to run the show. Cities will re-wild, motorways grown over. For a short time Land Rovers will again rule the world till we've used up all the cooking oil. Those of us left will take to the water on coracles . No point investing in a nissan leaf in the meantime.
  10. Have you checked the wastegate isn't opening till pressure reaches 1 bar? Need a boost gauge ideally or rig up an air line and air duster set to 15psi and slowly squeeze the trigger squirting it into the wastegate hose to see when it starts opening.
  11. Wastegate may be stuck open or needs the spring tension adjusting. You need to check you're getting 1 bar under load
  12. Good to hear - nice idea with the cutting edge. Luckily the weld is relatively soft & with a nice new file was only a couple of hours work. If it lasts a couple of years its time well spent.
  13. In the midst of my Rangie ambulance resto, pulled the gearbox out and noticed much slack on the output shaft and lots of red sludge. Pity, as the gearbox is otherwise tip top and I don't have the funds to splash on a refurbed one. So a cheap bodge seemed in order - the splines in the replacement cross drilled input gears are extended and cover the remaining good bit on the r380 shaft, but nice to have a bit extra material to take the strain, so had a go at building the splines up with weld. Need to use only moderate power so the bead sits on top rather than going for full melty penetration, and do one spline at a time so you can file back and test slide the new gear on/off and also to avoid putting too much heat into the shaft.
  14. You could try an abracs polydisc in a grinder, they don't clog up easily and remove a fair bit of material quickly - delicate over sharp edges though.
  15. It's usually bad or worn contacts in the hazard switch or It's starting to come apart. You can sometimes confirm it by giving the switch a firm push or squeeze while the indicators are on and see if they flash.
  16. I headed for inverness after Aultbee but wish I'd stayed on the coast a little longer as much nicer. Inverness just looked like any other big town with lots of industrial estates & retail parks so kept going. Loch ness also a little disappointing as expected some nice rural camps on the loch but don't think they exist - but did some very nice hikes on marked trails up into the hills with amazing views and some good wildlife . If you head back down past loch lomond, I found the Beinglas campsite on the north tip of the loch was very nice, though probably needs a booking before you get there, we got lucky though.
  17. We started to struggle to find pitches as well recently as I'd booked nothing and had no idea where I was heading next, but everywhere booked up, seemed to get worse the further north we went. We did find a really, really nice spot a little further north than where you are - Gruinard Bay camping just past Aultbee which for some reason wasn't full and right on a stunning beach with ace rockpools, seals bobbing about and stunning moutains across the bay.
  18. I was up there a couple of weeks ago, Skye and the northern Nc500 route, amazing scenery. If you pass through Fort William go to the Rain bakery and bring me back some Cruffins 🤤 may be the best thing I've ever eaten. Got done a treat by the midges - popped out of the tent in the altogether to have a quick midnight pee in a bush, thinking by the time they've noticed I'll be back inside. Counted 120 bites the next day 😖
  19. Yeah it was white originally but looked like an ice cream van 😄 and in Africa it was impossible to hide up in the bush, could see it for miles so went for puddle beige! Really haven't got the time for another project but now I've done most of the steel work I'm glad I didn't chop the old girl up..
  20. Yes, 110 springs are closed at the bottom and open up when the axle articulates
  21. Good to see it will go off and get a whole new start and go round the clock again. Pity we can't chuck ourselves in a workshop and come out like new! (Maybe not new, wouldn't want to go through nappies again 🤔)
  22. I've been thinking about a good replacement 4x4 camper since my Range Rover ambulance eventually like most of them by now I guess succumbed to rust - big chunk of the chassis disolved where sand got trapped, sills, A pillars, windscreen frame, top rail, footwells, bulkhead, inner wings all rotted away, wiring loom was a mess etc etc Been muddling along with 110 & oztent but much prefer the instant mobility of a camper and not having boxes of gear strewn about, and maybe I'm getting a bit old & grumpy for long road trips in a Defender (did loch ness to Birmingham in one hit last week, was grumpy after) Difficult to find such a good all-rounder though: Rangie was great off road, the longer rear overhang being the only drawback over a Defender/Disco. More aerodynamic than a 110 so would cruise nicely at 70-75 on long journeys, and the big comfy seats with arm rests were great. Dimensions only slightly larger than a 110 with roofrack, so could still park it anywhere, drive tight tracks or hide away from prying eyes. Very spacious in the back - did think about trying to build a new one but the back body is surprisingly intricate with a very clever lightweight space frame arrangement clad with fibreglass skins. Can't think of an alternative though and while literally waving an angle grinder over it to dismember and take to the scrapper, in a moment of madness the ambo got a reprieve and now I'm knee deep in another resto 🙄 🙂
  23. I'd looked at getting a used Thule ski carrier to store the oztent in - would work well alongside a canoe.
  24. Yes I have a noco, very nicely made and easily turns over a tdi. They are a very good price at Halfords if you have a trade card
