  1. Fortunately, I cant throw ithe old tailgate.. I took it down the skip, as the trail of rust was making a mess of the garage!!
  2. I have just tried to rivit ithe Aluminium channel in place but my rivet gun wont get in close enough to pop the rivet! I have fixed the Aluminium channel in place with tiny self tapping screws. (I hope the heads dont stop the rubber going in!) Tomorrow I will try and fit the ruber!!!! Watch this space...
  3. Hi all. I have just bought and fitted a new replacement Aluminium upper tail gate for my Rangie, but cannot work out how to fit the Aluminium channel that holds the bottom rubber seal in. If I fit (pop rivet) the Aluminium channel in place, it would seem impossible to then fit the rubber seal, which "looks" like it is meant to slide in "somehow". Does anyone have any ideas how to fit the Aluminuium channel and rubber seal ? Thanks in advance.
  4. Mine is a classic 1988 3.5EFI. Your right about all the fuel pipework looking bad (its very bad) and again your right: there is no access hole in the boot floor should the fuel pump fail in the future..... Without apearing dim, did you purchase replacement or patern parts for the fuel pipes, or did you have them made up (at a motor mart like brake pipes) , or make them yourself ? Lastly: I have been offered a "cheap" plastic petrol tank from a vehicle being broken. Does anyone know if a plastic petrol tank will drop straight into my vehicle ? Thanks in advance.
  5. Thanks Bob: Mine is the same 3 or 4mm drop. Sadly I didnt take any measurments, as I wasnt able to see anything obvious to use as a reference point (I wish I had looked harder now!). Did you raise the rear wings by sliding a section under the outter sides of the rear floorpan and jacking it up? I cant see anywhere other than this at the moment.
  6. Thanks for your help everyone: I will put a new Steel tank in. When putting in the new tank, I assume its normal to put the old fuel pump and sender unit back in, only with new gaskets? Are these readily available ?
  7. Hi: I have sprung a petrol leak from the tank (it apears to be coming from between the underneath botom belly plate, or cover and the tank body) I guess it was caused by hammer vibration whilst removing the rear crossmember. My question is, do I buy a new petrol tank, or can I realistically expect to repair the current one ? if so, with what ?
  8. Hi: I have recently removed the rear crossmember on my 1988 3.5 EFI, and managed to put the new crossmember back in "loosely" however: I have noticed the new one apears to sit higher. (ie the metalwork on the body panels doesnt line up with the edges of the crossmember anymore) Is it posible the body has droped whilst the old one was fitted ? (it certainly didnt apear to move whilst taking it out) or is it normal to have to jig the body panels up a bit, before welding them back on to the crossmember ? Anyone have any ideas ?
  9. Ivan: Many thanks for the advise: Its coming off, and I will block the pipes up.
  10. Hi Ivan: Thanks. Has your Discovery been MOT'd since you removed it ? and did you seal all the pipes, or did you need to leave any open for air to get in the tank?
  11. Hi: First time here. I have a 1988 3.5EFI. Regarding the fuel evaporative unit under the offside rear wing. I am sure I read somewere many years ago that its not really needed. Can anyone advise ? (I am only thinking of removing it if its not nessesary as I am in the middle of changing the rear crossmember and noticed a lot of hardened or split rubber hoses and rusty circlips)
