  1. I have just been given an old boat trailer which needs the wheels replacing. The existing wheels are 5 stud and are 15 inch. I do not know how to measure PCD on 5 stud. I have measured from 1 stud to the next around the circumference which is 67mm. I have also measured the hole in the centre of the wheel which also is around 67mm. Any ideas? Thanks MINESAPINT
  2. Thanks to everyone for their contributions to this thread. I am now much better informed. I do have a large number of cassettes & vinyl records which as far as I am aware I would not be able to transfer onto CD. But as I own these legally if I can download them or find someone with the identical album to copy onto CD for me then my copy becomes legal also. It would be wise in these circumstances to keep the original vinyl as proof I guess. The underlying principle is the fair use policy and if I have paid the artist once I should not expect to have to pay them again for the same work. Now I understand the above I can also see the loophole. If you purchase second hand records or cassettes you then hold legal copies. You can then download CD's off the net which are considered legal as I do own original copies! MINESAPINT
  3. I live in NE England and our local news this morning is featuring a bunch of prosecutions for illegally downloading music! Serious issue I understand with fines running to many thousands of pounds. Need some clarification of Otchies post. Any CD,s I legally own I can copy onto other formats (MP3, USB etc) to enable me to listen to them on other devices? True or False? Does this mean any 8 tracks, cassette tapes & vinyl I legally own I can obtain from other sources as I already own an original. You will understand what I am getting at. I have already paid performers by buying hundreds of recordings in various forms which I would now like to listen to on other devices. Should I have to pay the performer again? MINESAPINT
  4. Bowfinger, I have come across a site we7 which sounds as if you can download certain tracks for free as long as you also download some adverts. The performer is paid out of advertising revenue and I get music for free. However due to either my general incompetence or my VERY slow internet connection I am unable to download from the site anyway. MINESAPINT
  5. MOG, AUX socket. I looked in the Land Rover pric list Oct 2007 page 11. Under entertainment it is clear that Land Rover fit 2 different models of CD player. The XSSW and XSDCPU are fitted AUX socket for ipod/mp3 player. The rest ie County Hard Top have just the standard fitment. Whether anything will have changed between Oct 2007 and end July 2008 when mine is due I will have to wait and see. Never know your luck, they might run out of the common CD players the day before mine is built! MINESAPINT
  6. Although I experienced no problems with performance/starting my fuel pump became noisy a couple of years ago. After a couple of weeks and a long run it quietened down and has been OK since. I put it down to becoming very low on fuel and getting air in the pump. Is this likely? MINESAPINT
  7. I have now established the CD player in my new Defender will not have an AUX input so I need to concentrate my efforts in obtaining tracks I can copy to CD. Yes I am on dial up and cannot get broadband, something to do with distance from the exchange? (11 miles). There do seem to be differences of opinion with regard to whether downloaded music is "FREE" or "STEALING"?. I suppose it could only be decided on a case by case basis. I am beginning to understand that new artists are prepared to let their music be downloaded for free to "get it out there". With regard to established artists, clearly making music is their job and they expect to be able to sell it in one way or another and receive their agreed share of the proceeds. However there are various and ever more creative ways of selling it. ie. selling a CD to a newspaper to be given to all readers, agreeing that a web site could distribute it freely for a cut of advertising revenue generated by that web site etc. So I do not see that downloading music is always stealing and quite honestly however much I would like to obtain all my favourite music for free I am far too afraid to get caught as I understand the potential fines/penalties are substantial. There is a major problem as far as I can see which is when we find a track available for downloading for free how do we establish if it is legal? If NOBBYS post is correct none of us need to worry about the downloading bit as it is legal in the UK. MINEAPINT
  8. Thanks TOMMO, I have downloaded BitTorrent but still no luck. I think I am beat with my slow download speed. If an album is 5.5MB how long will it take to download at 2.00Kb/second??? MINESAPINT
  9. Needing help now! After searching for music to download I signed up to we7. Have tried & tried to play or download some music but no luck whatsoever. The instructions available on the site bear no resemblance to the site. They might as well be describing how to make pork pies! Is it just me? I freely admit to being a numpty where computers are concerned! Additionally I may be hampered with my slow connection, my average download speed is 2Kb per second. Any help appreciated. MINESAPINT
  10. Thanks guys, The post has made me aware of the possibility of connecting an MP3 or Ipod to the the CD player which I had not thought of subject to the CD player having the AUX connection. This I will have to check. The vehicle is an 08 Hard Top County. I have searched the internet for music downloads and free music downloads which has thrown up some interesting possibilities. Napster. Free for 7 days then £9.95 month but can be cancelled monthly. MP3-freebie. 66p a month. musicdownloadinc.net 30p a month. music download pro 39p a month. Anyone any experience of using these sites or can you recommend others? Thanks MINESAPINT
  11. When it arrives my new Defender will have a CD player in it. Problem is I am a bit of a ludite and have never owned a CD player or naturally any CD's. I will want to start a collection of CD's and am wanting to establish a cost effective way of achieving this. I remember a lot of controversy over Napster a couple of years ago. Could anyone advise the best way to go? Thanks MINESAPINT
  12. Just received my welcome pack from Land Rover having ordered a new Defender. There is a section "Warranty & Servicing" in which it is stated that servicing "should always be carried out at a Recognised Approved Service Centre using Land Rover approved parts. However, all warranty work must be carried out by a Land Rover Authorised Repairer". Question is how do I establish where the Recognised Approved Service Centres are?. Who does the recognition & approval and do they publish and update a list of these recognised & approved centres?. Any ideas? Thanks in anticipation. MINESAPINT
  13. Sorry, leaving the vehicle parked for a couple of months is not an option, it is my only transport. I did remove the nest this morning and within a couple of hours "he" had rebuilt it. I thought it might have represented a months hard labour although found this difficult to comprehend as it would have been underwater yesterday morning. I hope to be able provide alternative nesting sites if someone can give me some ideas. Thanks MINESAPINT
  14. Just walking past my Defender last night and noticed a Wren fly out from under it. Also noticed the Wren was flying in a suspicious manner. Quick look under vehicle revealed a nest in the rear crossmember where the chassis joins it, next to the jacking points. No eggs in it yet. What are the options: Ring Bill Oddie, Remove it, Drive carefully or contact Land Rover who will offer to lend me a new Puma for a couple of months as a publicity stunt? MINESAPINT
  15. Further to my post about towing a boat on sand. I am planning to fit additional wheels to my trailer as follows: Trailer frame is 5 feet wide. Plan to buy a length of stainless or alloy tube about 2 inches OD 6 feet long and U bolt it to the underside of the frame. Also plan to buy a set of 4 alloy wheels and bolt them together in pairs using the fixing holes and lengths of threaded rod. So I will end up with 2 sets of double wheels. Now if the centre holes in the wheels matched the size of the tube they can be threaded onto the tube which will act as an axle. What can go wrong? MINESAPINT
  16. Can now confirm the wheels are 100 PCD and have also found a list of wheel fitments on the internet provided by an alloy wheel supplier. I now have a comprehensive list of suitable donor motors. Still have a few questions: As my previous post I have found hundreds of suitable wheels available on ebay. I therefore thought I should try to establish which of these are in my location (Whitby, N Yorks). Is this possible on ebay or do I have to look at everything advertised? Having established the wheels are 100PCD is it likely that all the studs will be the same size/thread? MINESAPINT
  17. Definitely going for some larger diameter wheels fitted with largest tyres possible. Slight increase in height of trailer will be advantageous anyway. Just been looking on ebay and there are plenty for sale sets of 4/5 for under £10! Might be a bit ropey but hey they will be dipped in the sea every day and the trailer is less likely to get nicked with shabby wheels on it. If anyone is interested I noticed a set of 5 Series 2 Land Rover steel wheels on Ebay just been primed and look mint. 13 hours to go and currently 99p. MINESAPINT
  18. Just looked at my spare wheel. Tyres size 145/80 B10 Wheel has on it: 3.50Bx10H2 I know how the tyre sizing works, not sure about the wheel. I measured the stud spacings on the wheels: 4 Stud diagonally about 4 inches but about 3 inches apart around the circumference. MINESAPINT
  19. Thanks for replies guys, Buying some wider wheels/tyres is the simple option. The tyres at the moment are 145/80. The skids/ski's are a good idea but the beach is generally strewn with rocks/cobbles. It is sometimes difficult to drive round them all. A tyre would cross over these more comfortably. I did enquire at an Indespension dealer who quoted me for some wider wheels & tyres which I seem to remember were pretty expensive. Not sure if the hubs/wheels are specific to trailers or will other wheels fit? I think the dealer was trying to give me the impression other wheels would not fit. Mini, Clio, etc but he was trying to extract about £200 from me for 2 wheels & 2 tyres. Once I have sorted some wider tyres for the trailer I will still be interested in providing an additional axle so the spare tyres will not run in the same grooves made by the trailer tyres. Hope to fit them between the main trailer frame on a piece of stainless tubing. I should add the trailer never goes on the road. This arrangement is for the beach only. The wheels look about the same size as a mini wheel. How can I check the fitment? MINESAPINT
  20. I have a small boat which I launch with my Defender. The boat weighs about half a ton and is on a 2 wheeled trailer. On firm sand it is no problem but for use on soft sand the trailer could be improved by the addition of additional wheels. I could purchase an additional axle with much wider tyres to make a 4 wheel trailer but this would be a costly option. I wonder if I could clamp a piece of tubing to the trailer with U bolts and arrange a couple of wheels/tyres to spin on this tubing and be positioned with stops. I would also like to arrange the spare set of tyres so they do not touch the ground until the main tyres sink into the sand. Anybody ant ideas? MINESAPINT
  21. Recently discussed having new life breathed into my Td5. New doors, new body cappings, respray etc which would have cost £5,000. The garage were going to issue a letter to the effect the vehicle was now worth £10,000 and I should take this to the insurer to agree this increased valuation which is £5,000 more than the book price. So the key is making an agreement with the insurers beforehand as opposed to arguing with them afterwards when the car might just be a heap of molten plastic & aluminium. MINESAPINT
  22. Due to the rear door on my Defender Td5 showing signs of stress I decided to order my new vehicle with a plain rear door from the factory, the wheel to be fitted internally. The dealer advised me this is not possible and the vehicle will be delivered with the wheel fitted to the door. If required I can get the dealer to fit the wheel internally at extra cost once the vehicle is delivered. The scar on the rear door will be plated over. Thing is I am reasonably happy that the wheel should live on the rear door providing the door will not suffer in the same way as the Td5. I know time will tell but has anyone any issues to date with the new doors on the Puma and what is your best guess as to the doors durability? MINESAPINT
  23. MOG is absolutely right. It is up to us to find the good mechanics in our area, thing is how many of us are still looking. You would hope if you stick to a main Land Rover dealer you would be OK but as my experiences show this is not the case. If anyone can recommend a garage in the Whitby/Guisborough/Marske/Redcar/Middlesborough area I would be glad to hear about it. MINESAPINT
  24. Unfortunately car servicing is a mystery to me. I can do most other things but have never had the desire to get under the bonnet. However it is a skill I wish I had as I have had some bad experiences. My current Landy is Td5 and I had it serviced at a dealership in Stockton (UK). They did some gearbox work & failed to retighten the bolts holding the crossmember on the chassis. They also ruined the locking wheel nuts on my alloys, broke my windscreen and left the vehicle with diff lock engaged for me to pick up. I decided to have my vehicle serviced at a local garage and after the service the vehicle developed an oil leak. It was not until the next service at ANOTHER garage it was realised that the oil filter had not being tightened. Additionally it failed its MOT due to a missing retaining pin that should have been holding the rear brake pads in place. Either was not fitted or was not fitted correctly. This is only a list of stuff I am aware of. Recently at a dealership at Pickering my wife who was waiting in the vehicle while I was inside looking at new Defenders witnessed the dealership staff playing football in the car park in and among the customers & dealers own vehicles. 25. With regard to the colour, not a big deal for me. If Mrs MINESAPINT had not had something to say on the matter we would have been driving around in a Keswick Green one by now. However no bad thing and as she chose to get fussy about colour and it became clear we would have to place a factory order I got fussy about the other bits. We are ordering the County version with ABS in whatever colour Mrs MINESAPINT chooses. Would have ordered alloys but can't abide seeing the balancing weights clipped onto them. The Deep Dish alloys on mine do not have them on and are balanced with stick ons on the inside of the wheel. Much better idea. Anyway I can buy some Deep Dish alloys anytime. MINESAPINT
