  1. Just out of interest what sort of mark up do scorpion make on products. As i know he was selling the X eng hand brakes and wondered what he had them retailing at. I bet you for the extra price brought from scorpion you wouldn't get the same sort of after service that you get from Simon. When i have the money or hand brake needa attention i will definately buy from Simon. I doubt scorpion give free gifts either other than stickers. Jon
  2. Right ok not what a i want to hear right now. Have done a 20 minute 10mile trip twice and it seems fine for now and is not hot that was with stereo and heater going. I am doing a trip up to london in a few hours which is about 55miles. I hope it is going to be ok for that trip as the starter motor wont be drawing much current it would just be the light on the way back. I will get some cable and change it at the weekend just hope it will last ok until then. Jon
  3. If only i could get to exeter do an event on one tank, it would be bliss. But unfortuneately i can get to exeter on 1 tank and have fumes left in the tank. Exams are quite important so that i get a uni place next year for veterinary, but would much rather do an event than revision but needs must as they say. See you again soon. Jon
  4. Right all fixed now and seems to be charging alright. James not too far ???? Its about 200miles from me as i'm in sussex. Its not too far from darth but he only has the rover 200 at the moment so maybe on bitching duty. I would like to come down for it but its around exam time so i can't make it and its a long way for a day. Will be at steve's challenge at easter though. So may see you there. Cheers Jon
  5. Yer i thought it was like that but the bloke at the alternator shop said it looked like something had been going on by the alternator to engine block mount, and so to clean it up for good contact so didnt know whether washers were needed there. Thanks
  6. Obviously ignore the red wires i know where they go they just got in the picture some how. Jon
  7. Ok replacement is the reverse of taking apart except fir i have forgotten which bits go where. Basically there is a nut and bolt and 1 washer per bolt. So where does the washer go bolt head end? between the alternator and engine block or between the nut and alternator. i doubt any of that makes sense but here a ppicture to paint a 100 words. Just checking it goes the right way round for electricl conductivity etc. Cheers Jon
  8. Cheers for the offer Jon but have brought a replacement now as need the truck tomorrow. The price seemed good and the bloke seemed to know what he was talking about which was good. He said it wont charge at 85 Amps if the wiring is not up to it but it should be fine to run it with out any problems. I will up rate the wiring when i can so that it does charge at 85 amps. Thanks to every for their help. Just got to go an fit it not in the dark and rain, don't you just love land rovers at times Jon
  9. I think its a lucas alternator but it for a 2.5 petrol i will go and have a look. I know it is an alternator with a black cap on the back with 2 screws which can be removed to enable the brushes to be removed and cleaned. I will go and have a look and see what else i can find. Cheers Jon
  10. Oh dam, knew it would probably be worse than i had expected, ill check the earths anyway. Where abouts is the regulator pack then and is it easy to change. I have had the alternator apart before but only to take the brushes out to clean mud od is it as easy as cleaning these??? Thanks Jon
  11. My altenator is playing around at the moment. Looking at the voltmeter it is very near the 15V almost into the red and seems to be moving around more than it has been before. i.e. love voltage below 12V mark and the sometime normal sometime higher than normal. I just checked the voltage across the battery with the engine running and it is 14.5 which is ok but when the engine speed is increased the voltage increased to 15.6 - 15.8 . Which obviously isn't right?? I suspect it maybe the earth. What to look for when re earthing, scrap paint away to get good contact, but i dont want to increase the chance of any more chassis rust. Suggestions please Jon
  12. Yes Simon R on this forum will be able to help he run X-eng. Look on the website www.X-eng.co.uk Hope that is what you are looking for Jon
  13. Yer as Darth said, in my two years of driving the land rover i have had the clutch slave cylinder let go, so got a flat bed home, two wheel bearings on seperate occassions so both had a flat bed home. Also had a fan belt go which i was just about to tightn at the weekend but it let go on the friday morning. it was raining and horrible so i called out the recovery company to do it as i didnt have the right spanners but did have a belt. Unfortunately i still got wet helping the bloke do it as he was making it a more complicated job than it needed to be . Im sure i have more pictures of when it is being off loaded at home each time So so far thats twice a year i have needed recovery, mum says you can earn no claims bonus's for not calling them out, at least its her policy and not mine ! Jon
  14. A P shaped gasket i guess
  15. Its a 300Tdi in a discovery. I'll pass on that information, are you and tony tlaking about the same gasket kind of area. Is this near the water pump? Just remember someone saying about a gasket there being prone to leaking? Yer i have heard of diesel dave. I see if he can find any other symptoms. Cheers for the help Jon
  16. On behalf of a friend was just wondering what else to look for. Coolant needs topping up once a week as the water level goes down. Has replaced hose which looked like it was on its way out. He was told to suspect the head gasket. Yet there is no water in the oil, and no emulsion in the rocker cover. The exhaust gases are normal, yet i did not ask him whether he has checked for bubbles in the expansion tank. All hoses seem ok and there doesn't appera to be an air lock anywhere in the system. Engine runs fine and runs at a normal temperature and you can see when the themostat opens. If he replaces the head gasket he is tempted to skim the head and use a bigger gasket as is worried about the head distorting slightly. If he finds anything else wrong with the head how much is a new or reconditioned head likely to set him back Engine is at 140K (miles) Any other thoughts? Cheers Jon
  17. This is taken from the other post a while back when Chris Watts was thinking of buying a freelander: "Just a quick note on high miler TD4s - afaik you can't rebore them. Dad had to have a new engine fitted to his X-plate TD4 at around 160k (regularly maintained, mostly motoway miles). Mark" Haven't got a clue if this is correct or what would be worth further investigation if it is the case as the engine would only have up to 40k left in it, but saying that it could go on a lot longer and be fine HTH Jon
  18. Just found this on flea bay. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/cyclone-snorkel-top-...bayphotohosting it quotes a few figures with it too. Not sure if this is of any help to you at all. Jon
  19. Since fitting a rangie axle to the back of my 90, the brake balance is a little bit strong at the back at times and the back will lock up when you really stomp on the brakes. I know there is a valve that can be installed to adjust break balance but i dont want to do this. If i install ebc green stuff pads on the front will this help the problem, or will it make it worse or is it a bad idea to had different pads front and rear. I also hear the green stuff pads are not as good as standard apart from when they are heated up? Anyone comment on this? Sorry for thread high jack Cheer Jon
  20. Thats ok Millsy's will see you in the same car park, we can decide which lanes are worth a drive then. Will be good to meet up with various forum ppl. Cheers Jon
  21. Right i am going up to that area, with some others, so there maybe 3 of us or 5 of us not sure yet. Might see you around that area. Have a good day. Jon
  22. Ah thats good i was thinking of going on wednesday too! If its an open invite i may come along, if its not then im not offended. What sort of time are you going? I was thinking late morning afternoon depending on the strength of hang over i have as its my birthday tomorrow. How many of you are there going? Not sure if my mates will be around or not, havent asked them yet. If you haven't got a clue who i am im darthdicky's brother Jon
  23. I am planning on doing some lanes with some mates over the christmas holidays? I am in East Sussex and would like to know of any good ones in the area have looked at land ranger maps and not found much in the area and most are futher a field, most are surrey area. Dont want to travel too far as we are poor students with petrol 90's that have drinking problems. So any sugguestions or i shall head off with an OS map and see what i can find. Cheers Jon
  24. Well i presume the prop is balanced ok because there is no odd vibrations. Will check about binding and sliding joint. Im running about a 1 or 2 inch lift and so expect them to wear a bit quicker but its strange how the other uj's do not seem to suffer the same problem. Jon
  25. My rear UJ on my rear propshaft has needed to be replaced more frequently that the rest. The one on there now i think is on its way out as there is a bit of play in it. It has been on there since start of september as the last one nackered on the way home from tony's birthday bash. So since then it has only done 3-4000 miles. I grease them after every hard off road session. So what am i doing wrong when i replace them as the rest of the joints last well and this it the 3rd or 4th time i have replace this particular joint, the one on the other end is fine. The last one which failed was not quite at 90degrees to each other as i could not fit the grease gun on the nipple easily so presumed this was why it wore out quickly, however this one i made sure was at 90degrees between the yokes. Genuine parts used each time Any tips or help appreciated. Or is there just something wrong with the propshaft? Jon
