  1. don't know if it helps or not but the microc*t lists locking and non locking rear diffs for the 4.2 & 4.4 AJ engines. no option for locking on the fronts though.
  2. there is a website called www.way-finder.co.uk if you go there and register there is an application called track explorer that allows you to download an overlay for memory map/ tom tom etc that will then allow you to export it into said application and plot them on the map.
  3. vinegar shouldn't affect the paint too much, as it is not an overly strong acid, as long as it's flushed over with plenty of clean water afterwards it should be fine.
  4. I have ordered the conversion kit from eblag, intercooler pipes and downpipe to save some time. Bearmach are sorting the seals, cambelt, tensioners etc which will be with me this afternoon. Clutch i should have in stock here somewhere.......
  5. another question for the guru's - which clutch should we go for (borg & beck make-wise i know)? 200tdi disco, 2.5 n/a defender - or something else??? i take it they need moving forward a bit? he seems determined to use the disco box in this one - but i think it's going to be less hassle and easier to re-use the n/a box from the sound of it.
  6. Sucha shame to end up on the way home after such a valiant effort Well done to them both though for getting as far as they did - looks damn tough to me.
  7. full story at; http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/7624574.stm
  8. nice tidy job there - you must be well chuffed with that, good to see there is still some top quality workmanhship out there. off round to maccy d's now then with your baseball hat on backwards is it???
  9. Refitted the damper as per the instructions in the RAVE manual, so should be ok. Will have to double check it again to be sure though (the old measure twice - cut once comes in here, although no cutting involved - yet) Definately no free play in it either - done up nice and tight, checked the mountings too and they are tight as well. I will substitute the old damper when i get five mins, just to make sure it's not a faulty replacement, which would be unusual for a monroe item.
  10. does it have to be any special hose? or can i use normal reinforced fuel type hose? so far as extra's then we have; exhaust downpipe intercooler hoses oil cooler hoses (possibly) hose (8mm ID & xxmm) hose clips crank seals (possibly - will check first) cam belt & tensioners filters & fluids Also, i am a bit confused with the oil cooler bit. Now i know in the tech archive (now printed out) it says that the disco pipes are longer, surely if that is the case then they don't need modding? How does that work with the rad for not cutting the mounts - anything to make the job a bit quicker and less painful would be good
  11. cheers for the advice so far guys. we will have the complete truck to dismantle, so should have everything we need off the disco - thought it was better to get the whole thing, rather than just the engine.
  12. the shims are under the top swivel pin - remove the two bolts that hold the top pin in place (and the brake pipe bracket) and they should be under there.
  13. right, a mate of mine is looking to swap his n/a lump out of his defender after the timing belt went on it. i have looked through the excellent conversion guide in the tech archive, but still have a few questions for the guru's out there we are off to look at a complete disco that is local to us tonight, to inspect the engine (usual stuff will be done - cambelt and filters before it's started) and other gubbins. In the tech archive it says that the 200tdi will mate up to his original box ok, but would it be much more hassle to change the box for the disco one or best left alone? we are hoping to get it done without too much arsing about with fab work, and were wondering that if by using the disco box, we could retian the disco front pipe. any other helpful pointers would be muchly appreciated on this one, as i am sure there will be more questions to come.
  14. been there done that - along with drop arm joint, track rod ends and drag link ends, steering box free play adjusted and steering damper replaced (going to put the old one back on to eliminate that as being faulty) as well as two new front shocks (HD gas ones) just soime superpro bushes to fit now and then hopefully problem solved
  15. that is exactly what mine does. everything is fine below 45-50mph, but hit a bump at anything over that and it shakes better than shakin' stevens ever did
  16. Bearmach sell Superpro bushes - just got some for my disco 1 - quite a bit cheaper than OEC too.......
  17. the damper i fitted was a brand new monroe unit, that i was given by a friend who fitted it on his RRC, which never actually saw the road. i still have the old one, so will refit that one and see what happens, as it was only since changing it that the wobbles started. i will keep things updated as i go along, i will solve this one - somehow....... i think you are only about 20 mins away from me.....
  18. the bushes appear to be ok, can't really detect much more than normal play in them. i think i will order a set and try those next, then onto the hockey sticks if that doesn't work.....
  19. Did that last night - and it still shakes when you hit a bump in the road (and if anyone knows Herefordshire roads they are all bumpy) Any more ideas guys? it's getting annoying now
  20. right - update time. changed both the n/s track rod end and the drag link end, re checked the pre loads and made a slight adjustment to both sides, which appears to have made a slight improvement. but, it still has a shake when i hit a bump. could it be the hockey stick bushes and the panhard bushes causing a problem? there is some side to side play, but no more than you would expect from a rubber bush
  21. slight hijack, but my eldest bro made one of those when he was at school to control a morticing machine using compressed air and a dragon 32 computer, this was in 1982, and he won the regional finals, got £2k and we got to spend an expenses paid weekend in London at the British association of young scientists exhibition at the science museum
  22. hadn't really noticed them TBH, few *cough* small-ish puddles on the road though
