  1. Bingo, sorted.Very happy children now in back seats.
  2. Theres plenty of space under the seats & bonnet on a disco to carry tools & " spares" (though why a spare fuel filter ???)
  3. Thats just what i did on both my disco's (300 tdi).Unbolt the steel flexi pipe that goes to the top inlet pipe & make a blank from a piece of steel sheet or similar.Refit & bolt up.EGR may still operate but no nasty gasses getting through.I must say in both my trucks i had to remove inlet manifold & clean out as both were crudded up ,one so bad there was only a 25mm hole visiable once hose removed.Well worth it with noticeable difference afterwards
  4. Thanks for the info Phil. There is no groove for an 'o' ring in housing or block so i'll go for the sticky option
  5. I wouldn't touch it with that sort of history. There are plenty of good 300's around for that money but you need to look at plenty first & make your own mind up.
  6. HI, sorting out my old 2a (1962)& replaced rear crank oil seal. The problem i have is ,it has a later engine fitted (diesel) with the oil seal pressed into the gearbox adapter plate (5 brg).Does the adapter plate have a gasket / joint between it & the engine block ??? (there was no joint when removed but it looks like it should if you know what i mean ) .Any help greatfully received.
  7. For gentle bends of this type ,fill the tube with some of that kiln dried sand from wicks (the sort you brush into block paving) though dont add water.Cap the end & gently heat & bent to suit.Very easy & effective. When specials are needed in industry this never fails us.Good luck.
  8. Sounds like a good days work to me.Just patch the arches but make sure you weld all the way round (seat belt anchor point).Bushes ,brake pipe & middle box won't set you back more than £100 & some left for a few shandys. Not bad really for a 12yr old truck
  9. On my first disco i removed the cat ,removed the viscous fan, blanked off the EGR valve & turned the fuel up.On my present disco i have done all the above except removing the cat (at the moment) & also moved the pump diaphram pressure feed from the turbo to the inlet manifold.
  10. The last 2 disco's ive had ( 97 & 98 300tdi manual) have both done approx 550 miles to a full tank.Thats 200 miles on the first quarter & then the needle drops faster. This is on a full tank until the light comes on with every day driving.
  11. Dont forget to get a new plug for the thermostat housing (if its plastic its bound to shear off). You should be able to get a nice brass or steel one for a couple of pounds from the plumbers merchant (1/2 BSP thread).
  12. I would buy your tools little & often remembering that quality is better than quantity. After many years of spannering i have built up a good range of tools & as far as spanners go you can't go wrong with britool quality.Remember it always pays to buy hexagon ring spanners & sockets especially for tight nuts & bolts although for everyday stuff multi point are fine.Good quality does come at a price but if looked after you only buy it once
  13. I've done 5 or 6 disco clutch changes in the past. Its easy enough once you've got the top bell housing bolts out.Its debateable weather its easier to pull the engine forward or drop / push the gearbox back .First time it took around 6hrs but as always it gets easier (now down to approx 4hrs).A good quality clutch & release arm should only be £85ish .If you have the gear I would pull the engine forward (you need to remove the engine mount studs to allow this easily).Good luck & what else is there to do between christmas & new year
  14. I removed the viscous fan from my 1997 300 tdi (also fitted a new radiator).I fitted an electric fan fron a vauxhall carlton via a relay & manual switch.Took my caravan to france etc & temp never moved.Only time i had to use elec fan was this year laneing in scotland (high revs slow speed). So my advice would be biggest fan you can find in scrap yard ,whatever suits ,mine cost £10
