  1. Just wanted to say 'Bad luck mate' and 'Cheers for the write up.' I've been looking for a clear guide for the 200tdi cam belt for a while now, so I can do mine when it next needs it. Looking forward to the 2nd 're-assembly' part.
  2. There's no way I'd put mine in the td5 position. I'd break them too easily. I've gone for a similar approach to diesel_jim but not quite as well carpeted! I was going to enclose them properly to improve the sound quality, but it sounds great as it is. They're 6x9's in the back BTW.
  3. Nice one Steve, it does look good. I must get around to doing something similar on my 90. Were the Range Rover HD springs you used the same as the RR 'police spec' ones I keep seeing for sold cheap by craddock? I was tempted by a set of those, byt have heard mixed reviews of them.
  4. I take loads out when I go laning, but I must say that the single most useful recovery item I take is a simple spade! It probably sees the most action anyway. I've had to build up my recovery gear mostly while at university (only got 6 months to go!) so I've had to do it on a very limited budget. If I had to prioritise a beginners shopping list of kit, it would be as follows: 1. Gloves (heavy duty leather jobs) 2. Recovery points front and rear (jate rings are cheap and easy to fit) 3.= A rope or long strop (8m or longer). 3.= 2 good sized (tested) bow shackles. 5. Spade 6. 2nd-hand tirfor hand winch off ebay 7. Ground anchor 8. Jack The big step up has to be a powered winch (priority 9!). I've not found the loot for one yet, and my current kit seems to get me out of most trouble. All that said, the most important piece of recovery kit is .... your mate in a vehicle that isn't stuck that also has suitable recovery points fitted.
  5. That exactly what I've done on my defender. Picked up two series 3 door bottoms for £5 each and some snazzy ally door tops (military types with two moving windows) for £120 (complete & spotless). As Millsy said, lots more room inside, cheap and easy to replace if bent/broken/rotten and they look better IMO.
  6. Without wanting to get into the whole 'KERRs are dangerous' debate, I recovered a pal's 90 with a borrowed black-rat (I think) recovery strap and it was excellent. I don't know the full details, but the owner told me that it was meant to work kind of like a KERR but without as much stretch/spring. Certainly did the trick when I used it following a failed straight-pull with a non-stretchy rope. I didn't put much energy into it (i.e. I didn't take off at full pelt). Instead I recovered the stuck vehicle with a couple of small 'jerks'. I think he said it cost around £40 from a 4x4 show. If I had the money, I'd consider one. But I should add that I don't have much real experience of KERRs to compare it to. Only what I've watched others do, which, to me, appeared to be a lot more violent with far greater forces involved. I suppose what I'm getting at is that it appeared to be a middle ground approach which worked well and didn't scare the cr*p out of me.
  7. When I couldn't get my 90 under the height restrictor at the old tip in Swindon, I just drove up the exit and unloaded!! One of the council jobsworth plebs came and gave me a mouthful so I told them they must have mistaken me for someone who gives a carp. Such a bunch of simpleton muppets the lot of them. But if you pay peanuts, you get monkeys. Throw in the red tape brigade and local worzels and its a clear recipe for disaster.
  8. I've got those military ones on the front and back of my 90. I always fit a bridle to the front before getting stuck (which has happened more times than I'd like to admit to!) so I don't have to go digging around underneath in a mud bog. I've never been KERR recovered, but have been dragged off my axles and not bent them or obviously damaged them. As others have said: cheap, easy to fit, and seem to do the job.
  9. I love the way these movies always have dodgy Beavis and Butthead rock music, and some redneck in the background. Yeee-haw!
  10. Hee hee, nice one. Maybe we should paint 'kill' marks under the driver's window like on fighter planes?
  11. Check these loons out: Anti-4x4 posters They really have it in for the new disco. More importantly, Sam (the world's ugliest dog) has died. Ugly Dog
  12. Damn it, I only caught the 2nd half. Sounded like a load of carp from what I caught i.e. compeltely unbalanced load of ranting from both sides. Whatever!!
  13. Without wanting to sound unsympathetic, thanks for sharing that, I nearly fell of my chair laughing. Mostly because it's exactly the type of thing I usually do. Good work fella. Chicks dig scars. However, I'm currently working in A&E, and if it were my job to clean you up, I'd not be quite so happy!!
  14. Don't get me wrong, I know there are those amoungst us that don't help our cause. I'm sure that some of that list is indeed true. My problem is that the facts get mixed in with generalised opinons and assumptions and does us no good at all.
  15. It's certainly a demonstration of how determined and organised they are. It's a shame that we (drivers of green lanes) don't seem to be able to put up as good a fight. I suspect a lot of it is simply down to numbers i.e. there's more of them and the general public is probably more swayed in their direction. Depressing really.
