  1. Hi,thanks for correspondence, engine only misfires at 3000 rpm. under load, runs lovely at all other times.Have found throttle pot from known good runner for £150 so willing to gamble on this, witha view to future man cable conversion. also need to check crank speed sensor and ECU connestions. Will let you know how it turns out.Bit of an emergency this one as in need to pull the caravan down to cornwall for Easter hols, and need to effect repairs by late thursday night!!!!!!!! Once again thanks to all who replied, this forum is a regular goldmine of help and info. RATRACER...........
  2. Hello, can anyone offer any advice on converting the diesel injection pump on my 300 tdi auto to mech. type.Big job? Just having trouble with a terrible misfire, which has been diagnosed as the throttle pot. This can cost big money,if what i have been told at the garage is true(£600) , will start to trawl the breakers tomorrow. It's just the thought of all that electronic gear just waiting to go wrong again.Need to get back to a bloody simple cable arrangement! Look forward to your valued replies! RATRACER
  3. Now that's a bloody useful bit of info! This thread gives a perfect starting point and has restored my confidence in getting the thing fixed. I have towed a big caravan with this motor for thousands of miles and although not the most powerful truck it has always coped well enough. This recent fault makes it undriveable under load as the violent and rapid up/down/up/down changes every second or two will break transmission mounts or similar if allowed to continue,it really is that violent. I will try the kickdown cable adjustments and clean up the cable connections into the box,and see how we go. It's a start anyway. Many thanks. (it will be weekend before i get to try this,DAMN....but will keep you informed, all other ideas welcome) RATRACER
  4. Hello, Can anybody help or advise on a problem I have with a 300 TDI auto Landrover Discovery? When under load, e.g. pulling a caravan on a long uphill stretch, with the accelerator fully pressed. when the time comes to change up a gear, the box chages up and immediately kicks down again repeating the process until the accelerator is lifted partially, the engine comes off load and the box changes up. Obviously without the accelerator planted to the floor, we run out of power and need to floor it again, which causes the gearbox to repeat the above. When not towing or working hard everything behaves as it should. Anyone had similar trouble. How robust are these auto boxes? My disco has 78,000 on the clock,is it getting tired or in need of adjustments?
  5. WOW, Never would have thought it could be so complex/controversial issue. Have now fitted new gasket with help from the wife and kids, advice from forum members(thank you all) and, horrors of horrors I used the Haynes manual torque sequence and settings, and the same bloody bolts. Now worried, as although it was not too technical a job, it was hard work , and the thought of doing it again fills me with dread! It's run well for 50 miles and fingers crossed............... once again thanks for input.............RATRACER.
  6. Thanks for your responses so far, I will try the lift, see how she handles and then consider the castor correction bushes/arms. Am i correct in assuming that if i correct the castor, then i will need modded cardan shaft at the front? Or as i was led to believe by the magazine adds that modded cardan shafts are only needed for lifts of 3" plus? Best regards, RATRACER..........
  7. HI, anyone out there have any opinions or advice on whether or not it is necessary to correct camber with the offset bushes or even the purpose built correction arms,if we go for a simple 2" suspension lift on my 300 tdi Disco? What are the consequences of not doing this mod? Also, while we are askin' ,has anyone had propshaft trouble following a lift of 2"? Look forward to your respose, RATRACER.........
  8. Hello, can anyone offer any advice as to pit falls or problems when replacing 300 tdi head gasket? My engine has done 78000 mls and is blowing at back off the head, but losing no coolant(as yet),but it,s getting louder. A distinct chuffing noise that can also be felt when you put your hand to the back of the cyl.head by the bulkhead. Is this a common problem? Thanks in anticipation............RATRACER. PS. new exhaust gasket fitted friday,so its not that,or the injector washers, any other suggestions welcome.
  9. Hi there, Has anyone got any opinions or advice on when [milage /age] tohave injectors checked? Ihave a 300 tdi disco auto and fuel con. is about 23/25 m.p.g. Slowly working through all major fuel system components to see if we can improve it a little. Any visual checks? My motor has done 66,000 miles and some of that on new veg/diesel at 60/40%.....runs perfect, pulls well but still think mpg. is a little steep. Has anyone had improvements using K&N or similar replacement filters? best regards and thanks in anticipation.. RATRACER.
  10. O.K roof racks coming off! Only use it to carry timber from B'Q anyway, about once every six months. High tyre pressure in a vain attempt to cut rolling resistance of 265/70 colway mud tyres!!! Tyre press. now at 32 p.s.i. thank you[and all who picked up on this horrendous mistake]. The veg oil i use is direct from Makro or Tesco e.t.c. and disco actually seems to run smoother the more oil in the tank. I intend to do a proper fuel test using a remote tank containing exactly one gallon and G.P.S. to clock the mileage. THanks to all who provided info and otherwise! REGARDS,...RATRACER.
  11. THANKS FOR ALL YOUR REPLIES. biggest concern is that veg. oil use without a proper conversion may have done harm to top end of motor and affected m.p.g? Does a roof rack really upset things on local 30m.p.h use, i can understand motorways but pop to the shops use? I have 50 p.s.i in standard diameter tyres ,albeit muds, but it does get its feet dirty as often as poss. so loathe to change for road tyres. Any ideas on redex diesel treatment? CHEERS , RATRACER
