  1. Happy Nude Bears all 3 simple questions from a simpleton! Tyres: Trying to establish the correct ture pressure with whats listed in Haynes, and I can't understand Tyrese! The tyres on our 90 have - R235/70 R16106T RM7J. Can anyone point me to a tranlation tool for what they mean? Rear De-mister- Can the element be replaced in-stu if it's damaged, or does the whole glass need replacing? Lastly, on behalf of my girlfriend - whyn is when driving through a local well known and persistent puddle in a Peugeot 206, the water scythes away symmetrically either side, when driven through in the 90, it all seems to concentrate into a giant horizontal coffin shaped slab of water which drenches the windscreen, giving a momentary excitment of total blindness, even with wipers on "Do I Have To?" Speed (actually they only do "Do I Have To?" speed now since the faster, "Oh All Right Then" wiper speed has gone the way of the rear-demister. Cheers! Jon
  2. Morning It must know I've been talking about it. Earlier, It turned over once, then died. Then proceeded to 'click - click' on every key-turn after that. Not being overly technical, I undid everything, checked battery charge and reconnected and it started just fine. But to save my other half getting stuck or stranded in the week, what could be the cause of click-click-fever? It couldn't have been poor connections because the glow-plug light and battery light came on with the ignition, and the charge seemed o.k? Following yesterdays post asking for electrical references (thanks for the suggestions) this is in light of every week, a new function going off-line. It's quite exciting actually, we never know what will work or what won't every time we get in it. Rear screen wash means "indicate right" and reverse light flashing means "intermittent fog wiper". I guess.
  3. Howdy At the risk of being patronised off the planet . . . . can anyone suggest a good starting point or reference to learn about vehicle electrics, web or print? Cheers Jon
  4. Cheers, there's quite a few weeps; hopefully will sort them out one by one, now the main leaks (crank case & sump) have been sorted.
  5. Morning all As I only drive the truck on weekends (wife has it in week) I only noticed yesterday, while coasting to a stop almost landed me in my next-door neighbour's Fiat's back seat; that the brakes weren't right. A quick test-drive seemed inconclusive; sometimes they felt fine, but (at lower speeds?) it felt they weren't servo assisted and it was like stopping when the engine wasn't running. The fluid reservoir is full, but peering with a torch under the air-filter, there seems moisture/fluid around the vaccuum pump, but that could just be general engine gippage? I haven't crawled underneath yet (I need eggs AND bacon for that) so thought I'd ask while I finish me coffee. Cheers for any help. Jon 300tdi 11400mls
  6. Evening! I know it's not strictly technical; but we need to get a roof-rack/roof-cage on our 90 this week due to unexpected workage coming our way though some festivals. There seems to be a wide range on ebay and commercial sites; but can anyone recommend a site/seller or product? We need to carry empty apple boxes and canvas. Cheers Jon
  7. Right on, Sam! Mine hasn't worked either and have been loathe to post the question as there've been other, more oily and significant issues to ask about. Also didn't want tot get the "get a grown-up to help" response, which is never helpful. When wife returns, I'll give Western and LML's advice a go; good luck with yours! Jon
  8. Cheers Jim! Would I feel play in the offending shaft? I guess the thing would be to compare the feel of the opposite side? If so, how would I tell which end the wear was?
  9. Howdy! Can anyone help with a noise problem? I don't drive the thing day-to-day (300tdi 11000mls), only weekends, but noticed today while off to market something which I'd picked up before, but slightly more noticeable. On changing down/slowing down or coasting , there's a low rumble/rattle which I had put down to a panel-rattle or something like that, but it's definitely more strident than before, and now I can also feel a slight vibration through my feet (and behind!) Intuitively it feels like it's coming from the near-side (if that's the same as 'left side'?) but I'm not certain. Wheel bearing or cv-joint? Cheers all! Jon
  10. Hi, just a quickie; 300 Tdi, fuel guage needle; when it drops to just the right edge of the red, how many miles/km have we got left (broad guesses?)? Having only driven cars before where the fuel warning light means you've got another 2 days driving to do. Cheers Jon
  11. We've a 11200 miles on a p reg 90, that's now working everyday. It's in apparent good nick with mostly original bits, apart from usual wear & tear. Any suggestions for upgardes/modifications of components to make it a sturdier truck as time & budget allow? (mind you it seems pretty sturdy, as is) Cheers Jon
  12. Hi Tony I think you gave me his number last December when I first joined, but don't know how to retrieve it! It'd be great of you could give it again? Cheers Jon
  13. Thank you very much, Les; as ever helpful and clear.
  14. Afternoon We're getting closer to tracing our oil leak(s) now on our recently bought P-reg-90 300tdi and have identified the following causes and likely works needed;a leaking crank-case oil seal (to be replaced, assuming timing belt hasn't been knackered) and leaking sump (with cross-threaded drain plug, also to be replaced) A question for the professionals and super-capable DIY-ers out there; what sort of job is this in terms of time and effort, so we could compare prices between garages/mechanics? We haven't got the ca$h to get it wrong or the skills/space/time to D.I.Ourselves. The other alternative is to leave it, not worry but keep checking for a total-oil-loss situation and wait! Cheers Jon
  15. I'm sure it was my fault anyway. Removed bulbs, still fizzed, going to try L-M-Luke's thread, and am looking at multimeter tutorials right now. Maybe if I can get this right, I'll be able to fix the rear-demister, rear-windscreen-wiper, heater, particle accelerator. . . none of which work on our Landy. Cheers!
  16. I know, 20p each!? Just as well the rate I'm going through them. So, did that, and replaced the relay, and now the fuse only blows when I indicate left. Still makes a squeal. Have re-read Mr. Haynes and will try and borrow circuit tester/voltmeter (and 'a grown up') Cheers Jon
  17. Good Morning We've suddenly discovered a fault where on indicating (Preg90 300), there's a squeal like a stuck rabbit and a fuse goes (fuel guage, water temp and hazards) I'm guessing the relay has gone and that it's behind the fusebox, haven't taken it off yet as it's just about to go out for the day (with instructions on hand signals) Will it be labeled clearly? Also, on looking at the fuses for the first time the other day, most of the blades looked furred and partially corroded. What's a good method of cleaning them? Cheers!
  18. Evening all I've just realised with (mild) horror that when we bought our (first ever!) 90 just before Christmas last year, I transferred the insurance from the now-replaced Peugeot 406 estate to the Defender so I could go and pick it up and drive back covered but never sought a new/better deal. What with the holidays, exciting new truck and all the rest; it all got lost in the mix. It was only going through the insurance thumb-screws after having our other runabout interiorly thoroughly inspected and cleared of contents by a kindly Bristol smackhead with a screwdriver yesterday (2 p.m busy street, right next to a gobsmacked coffee-drinking AA-man, awe-struck at the speed and efficiency of thievery) that I realised what had (or hadn't) happened. After almost an hour on the phone this afternoon (while typing/working one handed) for a couple of quotes to the usual biggies; I thought I'd ask you guys if there is anyone else I should try? This might be a dumb question (but not as dumb as loading car up with laptop, PDA, and surveying tools beforegoing back to get the AtoZ , lunch box and high-5'ing mates)
  19. Lin-Bin = Brilliant! Thanks for that, I can leave Caractacus to designing his all-wooden folding bicycles! Perfect. Dickson-Bate - cheers for that, AND they're still in business? I was imagining a tweedy eccentric English inventor in his garden shed fabricating Enigma machines and tow-hitches between cucumber sandwiches and Classics revision. Jon
  20. Afternoon all A few schoolboy questions here that someone may be able to help with?; 1. What's the best place to find bitzenpieces, like at a landrover autojumble or something here in the south west? We're after a few things, one being a tow-hitch plate which we can swap between NATO (already on) and ball hitch quickly and easily. I remember it being a type with a name something like Braxton-Hicks, but my wife (with a wince) assures me it's not that. 2. Secondly; Before re-inventing the wheel; does anyone know of a modular racking system that fits in the back of an unmodified hardtop 90 or will I have to get together with my Caractacus Potts-a-like mate and make something up? Basically we need something that we can remove when we need the space for tools and tat etc. but then is fitted back in, onto which we can slide and store containers (for delivering cut flowers) and that maximizes the space. 3. Lastly, I'm dreaming about rust; our 90 gets covered in cow muck, mud and slurry daily, and after some earlier advice received here we (garage) jetwash the underside off every saturday morning. Is this enough (daily isn't practical) or should we look to be taking more precautions? Cheers in advance! Jon
  21. Cheers all That's a great help, I'll get mask and wait for a dry day!
  22. Evening all Two questions from a new(ish) owner!: How do I tell what the paint colour of our (P reg) 90 is so as to match up when touching up scratches & rust? Pale farmer blue is how I'd probably describe it, I'm fairly certain it's original (it's the one behind our teenager's Banksy stencil on the left - <he did it for an art project at school and it was just the right dimensions to put on the truck!) 2ndly; still trying to trace and rectify a small annoying oil leak; have had three opinions and two very different suggestions; is there a LR specialist around Bath Bristol area anyone would suggest? Tony recommended someone in Cheddar which I'll try if no luck elsewhere, as I work in Bristol/Bath so that would be easier. Cheers Jon
  23. Can anyone recommend a good 1-day course/event (preferably in the SW) as an introductory session for driving LR's off-road? I want to treat my wife to a day (or half day?) 'play' just to experience what they can do, to learn some techniques and improve her 'kinetic envelope' (I made that up) and to give a bit more confidence when having to bash around the place with trailers and tractors, cows, straw and fields getting in the way!?
  24. Following on from my "can't-reverse" post earlier (missing reversing collar) the trailer seems sound but is in a bit of a cosmetic state (flaky cammo paint, rust and general wr&tr) I want to clean it up to a point where we can paint it the same colour as the towing 90 (farmer blue) as it's a new small business venture. Any ideas or pointers towards a "how to" in cleaning, preparing and painting stuff? Cheers! jonjon
