The mobile borer from Stockport does an amazing job. We have just used him on a DAF 55 LF 6 cylinder engine that had been running for 6 months with no air filter. He did it all in situ, took him a couple of hours to bore and reline. Was remarkably cheap too.

I have a LWB RWD Transit 350 converted to a motorhome weighing about 3 tons with the 2.4 TDCi 140 engine in it (Same as Defender) It's got satellite dish, TV aerial, chimney and solar panels on the roof, so not the most aerodynamic - I get 32 - 35mpg on the motorway doing >70mph, so I think there is something very wrong with your 90 if you are only getting 18mpg

Drill Bits - Cobalt M35 ( 5% ) M42 ( 8% )
nicksmelly replied to robertspark's topic in Tools and Fabrication
Why not consider Tungsten Carbide hard plate drill bits...Very similar to a masonary bit, but the tungsten carbide tip is ground to a very sharp edge. -
We plan to be, if there are enough entrants for it to happen

Most Defenders already have a bias valve on the back axle. You could replace that with an adjustable one. http://www.jjcraceandrally.com/race/brake-bias-adjusters-balance-bars/jjc-screw-type-brake-bias-valve £35 from JJC race and rally. On the Discofairy we had vented 110 discs and calipers on the front and standard on the rear, we kept the standard bias valve.

The Discovery - named Discofairy for some unknown reason was originally built in 2002 and did a few hillrallies and a couple of stage rallies. It then sat unused for nearly 10 years before I bought it. We rebuilt the 3.9 engine which was lightened and balanced and then megasquirted it. The rollcage was modernised ready to race in France and fitted nice new Milner Varidamp shocks, but unfortunately my circumstances changed and we never managed to race it at all. It sat in a garage for a year. A new project had started so I decided to sell her to fund a nice 6 speed sequential gearbox for the new car. The new owner raced her in France at the Rally Plaines et Vallees where it finished and he received a trophy This is the new project - Can you guess what it's going to grow up to be?

A 110 will be more stable, but don't discount Discovery's and Range Rovers - which are much cheaper than equivalent 90's or 110's. This was my Discovery Comp-Safari / Tout-terrain racer, which I sold to a nice man in Oxfordshire. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LYTzmvzeGYA

Review: Fenix HP05 head torch - 3xAA
nicksmelly replied to Chicken Drumstick's topic in Tools and Fabrication
Like it. How much did it cost? -
Powder coating is not the same as the sh*t plastic coating of old that was applied to bull bars and the like. Modern powder coating is very good, better than paint. We use it on wishbones, space frames of comp safari racers, and where it's worn off with hitting rocks, the ground etc. its not suddenly all flaked off around it. It's also cheaper than painting. Just had a full spaceframe and panels powder coated for £250. It would have cost £250 in 2k paint to do the same job.

Does any one know any thing about this?
nicksmelly replied to muddychris300tdi's topic in International Forum
Thats a TDCI from a 3.2 Trasnit, I know it's been said above... It's the same type of engine that is fitted to the current Defender, only the Defender engine is 2.2, not 3.2. It's a proper common rail with high pressure fuel pump and electric injectors, not an old fashioned mechanical injection system. I have a 2.4 TDCi in my Transit that has been remapped to 170bhp and its the fastest van I have ever driven. -
I'd be visiting Trading standards. If they replaced everything you say, I would say 800 miles is not reasonable time to failure. They will advise you correctly.

CPC were selling an identical inverter to the one below listed on ebay last year for about £499. The CPC one is badged Mercury. I have a 1kw version that work bought for me and it works fine, so I bought one of these off ebay from Taiwan. It was delivered in 3 working days and does exactly what it's supposed to. It even runs a 900w microwave in my campervan, which is unusual for inverters as it's a purely inductive load. Anyway - here it is. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PEAK-3000W-12V-PURE-SINE-WAVE-POWER-INVERTER-BATTERY-SOLAR-PANEL-WIND-TURBINE-/281153140596?pt=UK_Computing_Power_Inverters&hash=item4176087774

Private individuals do not have to comply with the information comissioners guidelines on cctv data protection as long as they only use the cctv equipment for crime prevention.

Did you got the oil holes on the rocker shafts at the right angle so the oil from the pedestal was able to flow properly in to the shaft?

need advice on which multimeter is best
nicksmelly replied to ehayashi300's topic in Tools and Fabrication
I have several Fluke meters, but I also have a Tenma meter from CPC which cost a quarter of the price of the cheapest Fluke I have. It's just as good, and feels very well made. I've used it most days for the past 18 months and not had a problem. http://cpc.farnell.com/tenma/72-7745/digital-multimeter-trms/dp/IN04419 -
The tyres on a trailer must have a greater load carrying capacity than the GTW / plated weight of the trailer. You face penalty points if stopped and checked and have under rated tyres.

I think this double post doo daa needs fixing.

Nail Pauline to it. Job done. Thank you Pauline.

The rear axle of a fairly recent Transit RWD van is very similar to Heep Cheeriokie axles.

You are getting proper powder coating mixed up with plastic coating. Powder coating doesn't lift. It does chip and where the chips expose bare steel, the steel will rust, just like it would with paint.
