  1. Hi, Can anyone tell me the correct gearbox mounts for a 1991 2.5 VM RRC, I have the round rubber disc type as used in the V8 engine RRC and the cone shaped as used for the VM engine mounts. I have checked the parts book but they confuse it by calling the cone shaped ones "rear engine mounts" but show them with the brackets for the gearbox. Small thing I know but it drives you mad. Thanks in anticipation.
  2. I think the front springs are green stripe , I seem to remember those being on my ex police 3.9 RRC,but I think that greens are standard rears .so if you have greens on the rear just put them on the front with red/white on the rear,it should give about 2 inches of lift. Steve.
  3. Hi Just a quick one ,Can the fans from an aircon RRC be used as cooling fans for the radiator? I have a spares car fitted with aircon and wondered if I could use them on my diesel RRC instead of the engine driven fan,I have heard that it could save 10% on fuel, And as I do not tow a 3 ton trailer across a desert do I need the original fan anyway? Thanks in advance. Steve.
  4. Hi I thought I would add my 2p worth ,My 2.5vm has done over 200,000 mls and still going, I still get 29-30 mpg. The vm specialist told me of one he had in done over 350,000 and was taken down just for a recon. Its all down to care change oil at 5,000 mls and make sure it never runs hot,I think even TDIs dont take to kindly to runing hot.The TDIs are smoother but the VM 2.5 has a littel bit more power. As for the 4 heads they are not better than 1 ,one head off all off, the heads share head bolts so you undo one head and the next one is lose, But from my exspierance the VM 2.5 is a good solid workhorse. Steve.
  5. Hi I had a very bad shake on my 91 RRC when I lived in the UK ,I replaced dampers springs bushes adjusted the swivels, I took it to a power steering workshop and had the box passed as good, In a last try (befor it went in the river) John at LRR lent me a s/hand box and......IT WORKED!, So a recon box was purchased and fitted no more trouble (and the RRC stayed on dry land). When the box was stripped down they found a seal had split and under great force such as hitting a pothole it allowed fluid passed it and started the shake, but with normal hand force there was no play . That was 60,000 mls ago and still no shake, But I do all my driving on French roads now so not many potholes out here. Regards Steve.
  6. Hi The headlights are attached to the front panel behind the grill ,All you need to do is drill the small tabs on the new plastic one to line up with the self tapping screws that hold the old one on,I did this to my 1972 RRC to update it (I know, but it was a long time ago when the new grills first came out). Hope this helps. Steve.
  7. Hi Thanks for all the advice, I have just blown the small vent pipes though with an air line and bled it by disconecting the small vent pipe at the top of the water rail, result air came out water level went down so I hope thats it. Thinking about it when I changed the thermostat I backflushed the system so I may have blocked the vent pipes. Thanks again for the help Steve
  8. Hi , I changed the thermostat on my 2.5vm RRC and now it seems to have an airlock in it,It runs at the right tempreture but the hoses are really solid and when I losen the filler cap the water pours out,I was wondering if it makes a differents where the small hole on the thermostat is ?. I am a littel concerned as the VM heads are a bit prone to damage due to heat. Thanks in advance Steve.
  9. Hi Paintman How many breathers are there on the box ?, I have checked the one that comes up behind the engine and that one is clear. Roversteve.
  10. Hi I have just traced a small leak on my gearbox (LT77) , It is coming from the hole where the wading plug goes to seal the bell housing, Not too bad yet but I asume that it will need to be done. Any ideas on what could be leaking ? or do " they all do that sir", I am sure that it's from the gearbox as the oil is red . Thanks in advance Roversteve.
  11. Hi Dave I have had R/R for 20yrs and all of them have had the splines to the gearbox front and rear. Hope this helps. Steve.
  12. After all the good advice from you guys I have changed rear springs on my 1991 ex police Range Rover. The ride is now a lot smoother with the progressive springs. However the gap between the axle and bump stop is now the minimum according to the manual. The car now sits 1 inch lower at the rear. The springs were the correct length so I think it's possible that the self leveling strut is u/s. I have a spare self leveling unit on a 1990 RR that seems to sit correctly. Is there any way of testing or measuring if this one is OK before the "easy job" of dismantling. Thanks in advance Steve
  13. Thanks everybody for your information. I took the top off of the forks on my old 1967 triumph motorbike ( fitted with progressive spings some years ago) and the tight coils were at the top so I'll try that way up first. Still not sure if progressive springs were fitted to anti roll bar models but as I have a pair of progressive springs they are what I'll fit! Heres looking forward to a smooth ride. Thanks
  14. Hi to all. I wonder if someone can help me with a small problem ,I have a 1991 ex police R/R that I fitted a VM 2.5 diesel into,I changed the front springs to the correct ones for the diesel version but left the rear with the police spec ones, Now that I no longer need to carry heavy loads I want more comfort , My parts book shows two sets of springs one set green standard the other set pink/purple progressive , My car also has antiroll bars fitted, so which ones ?, If its the pink/purple which way up ? Thanks in advance Roversteve.
