  3. Pfft!!!! I wanted to show why I was so keen to try and get it sorted or at least get some un-biased feeback! It would have to be on the side where there are` lots of bits And my engine has only done 78k all documented.. .. ..

  5. I'm told it's a straight forward job, especially as the chassis is abs fine. It's the labour taking off rusted/welded on nuts bolts Here's what the Mot chappi said we needed to have done. The quote I had was just for the wheel arch..; ok problem--->Wheel arch off front, and corrosion within 30cms of rear seat belt mountings on both off and near sides. Re being covered, I think that because it's failed an mot, unless we actually book it in for another mot subject to welding that we aren't covered? (don't quote me on that) which is a bit of a chicken Vs egg situation..
  6. Rats..I'm inbetween a rock and a hard place. Don't have the time (or the tools) to do it myself..and lets be honest, the technical know-how..so I have a vehicle stuck on private land, fully taxed and insured and no MOT and actually no way of getting it mended. <insert unladylike swear words here> Thanks for all the replies by the way Where abouts am I? Broadway..all the quotes we have had have been in the kerzillion pound mark (£900 and upwards) I am completely stuck..anybody any suggestions or have a desire to take it on? I can send over a pic of how it all is etc etc including what actually needs doing.. Eep my bad, that was just for the front wheel arch bit and it was £1100 not £900..I'll drop in a couple of piccis (not sure where I got the 900 figure from ---> noob!)
  7. But first a small rant at my incompetance! <rant rant rant> Ok got that out of the way... My lovely 91 Classic has hit a stumbling block, which to an enthusiast is a run of the mill expectation, but to me who has moved to the wrong part of the country, doesn't have endless supplies of cash and doesn't know who to go to, it's a bit of a mess. So I'm hoping that some of you good people will be able to assit or point me in the right direction.. It failed the MOT due to corrosion of the Off side wheel arch (which needs replacing/rewelding) and corrosian of the panels where the rear seat belt mounts join. The rest of the vehicle is really clean, & mechanically really sound, just I don't have the contacts and obviously as I'm not in 'the know', this is proving to be very very expensive. Any suggestions? It seems criminal to break it when the rest of the vehicle is so clean. But I'm stumped.

  11. Probably should have been a bit more fortcoming! I bought this vehicle just before Xmas..and being naturally cynical (female trait! ) I can't help looking a gift horse in the mouth..i.e. it seems to be good to be true. (can't find a thing wrong with it...) The 'knock' as discovered from a previous thread (thanks to all for that) is a 'just-starting-to-have-a-bit-of-play' CV joint, I'm just a bit sensitive to any changes in the engine..and being a non mechanic but hugely interested..i like to know not just the how to fix, but why it started and what the knock-on effect might be. As far as I can see..this is a vehicle that will just enjoy being used the way it was supposed to be. Just I am so used to hoofing through Europe in a slightly different sort of vehicle..I wondered if I was expecting a tad too much..I know most of you are extremely experienced and knowledgable...and apart from not wanting to be standing like a lemon at 3.00am on a European motorway ( B) !!) I just wondered what you thought..
  12. When I bought afor mentioned 91 classic, it had already had the best tyre upgrade: 235/70R16 H Srangely at full lock to the left it is rubbing (bushes? is the explanation I was given) I have been told that's normal..is this right?

Ok after the questions about my wierd 'knock'..my next question is as follows: She's a 1991 classic, 75k fully documented, fully serviced, completely unspoilt...not a thing has been missed service wise or replacement wise (hence my paranoia about the 'knock' as she's not long come to me) I usually drive through Europe & have a trip to Grindlewald planned in late feb..(foot of the Eiga!) My question is: Will this well maintained seasoned lady cope with a 2,000 mile round trip or am I expecting too much? I'm afraid my view is that cars should be driven..and frankly 75k for a 91 vehicle is probably low enough to cause more harm than good..imho What do you think? Am I expecting too much? or exactly what is to be expected ..I can't stress how incredibly clean this vehicle is..(it really is that good mechanically..except for that bloody knock!!! grrr )
  14. Well...it would seem that my CV joint does in fact 'have some play in it' but not sufficient to warrent changing..yet.. All the other stuff you have all suggested I have had checked, she's as sold as a rock.. Heyho Oh Re: the card in a wheel metaphor..I was trying to add 3d sound to my poor visual description! Is it just me or am I just being wierdly paranoid because of a knock?!
  15. Ah-hah..that somehow sounds like the kiddi..just about everything else has been replaced and/or checked.. Mind you...dang.. I'll check the other things you have all suggested..will keep you posted ...muchos gracias!
  16. Hrrm...yup taken all the wheels off...checked all of that... negative.. is there anything 'major' that may be causing it in the drive-shaft/axle dept?
  17. ..''knock'' .. Ok here goes..not a very technical explanation, but i'll do the best I can! I have an abs immaculate 91 classic... 75K fully documented all the recepts blah blah .. just had the Discs & pads done..and have now developed an extremely odd knocking/sound. At first I thought it was the tappets, then I wondered if it sounded like the discs hadn't been 'set' correctly..then my imagination ran wild..and a little knowledge is a dangerous thing kicked in. I had it checked again today and have been told, 'nothing loose, nothing going to fall off' but its an extremely unnerving noise, sadly its been a few years since I was rummaging about under the bonnet of an older landie/rangie..and I wonder if anybody can offer suggestions as to what it could be? It is a 'revolution' sound.. It isn't always there & only obvious'ish when accelarating. (frankly it sounds like a playing card`in the spoke of a bycycle!) She's a lovely old girl, who has been lovengly maintained but it's payback time for all the low mileage (for heavens sake... one 12 month period clocked 1200.. ) Hope somebody can offer some suggestions?
