  1. Over the past 12 months I have had a very occasional small whine when pulling off which normally lasts only for about 1/2 mile and then completely goes. When I say occasional, I mean very rarely but it has been there. It disappeared after having the front propshaft UJs done (they had actually gone and this wasn't an attempt to cure the whine). Recently I have noticed an occasional rattle from under the Disco. It has occured a few time recently and appears to be related to road speed. A couple of times it has occured along with the whine which have again diminished when I have slowed down and completely stopped when the vehicle does. I popped under the Disco tonight to feel about after it occured again (slow speed and dissapeared once I got going.). The rear prop is solid. The front is solid at the diff end and feels loose at the transfer box end. When I rotated it slightly it seemed to make the same noise (metal slapping together) albeit not continuous as when moving. I have been looking into differenct causes and it seems that the front output shaft bearing might be a culprit. I would be very grateful for any opinions that you could give before I start actually trying to carry out any remedial work. Typsey
  2. Guys, Thank you very much for the advice. I thought that it would probably be the case that the timing belt was fitted incorrectly but wanted to check my conclusions with people of more experience. I'll let you know how I get on.
  3. Hi guys, I took my beloved 200K+ disco to a garage to have the cambelt changed. Since that time, she has been gutless on any type of hill. She'll also barely do 70 on the flat. I have taken her back in and he has advanced the injector pump which has just made it sound like a ford transit engine with no improvement in power. He is now talking about adjusting the fuel pump. He insists that the job was done correctly but I can't help thinking that this is all just masking the issue as apposed to fixing the real problem. Can I get some feedback and guidance from you all so that I can get this fixed once and for all please? Typsey
  4. The old girl runs nicely with very few problems in the last 6 years that I've owned her. The starter motor once become stuck the day after she went off-roading; the rear boot has been welded up; managed to adjust the door lock mechanism instead of fitting a new spring on the O/S front door. As for the window, I managed to get it back up and it works over the first 3/4 of movement. Any further then it stays down and I have to strip the door again. She'll sit like that forever now unless I get bored one weekend. Thanks for the pointers. Typsey
  5. Ouch indeed. Was worried that it might take my fingers off when I was working on it at the roadside. Thanks for the pointers. I will have a go at it over the weekend.
  6. Thanks for the reply Les. When I had the door card off I tried lifting the window by hand but it seems to not want to go. I originally thought that it had become stuck somewhere and was hoping to free it but to no avail. Any other thoughts?
  7. Hi guys, I was just celebrating the fact that my 300Tdi 1995 3 Door Disco was super reliable and was about to reach its 200K mile birthday when the nearside front passenger window decided to stay down. I had been survey for newts and had to drive over a barley field using the tractor runs when she decided not to go back up. I thought that it might have worked something loose so I stopped and took the door card off to have a look. I couldn't see any problems so had to drive it away with the window open for the rest of the night. When the window switch is pressed the mechanism makes a noise but it doesn't work. No clicks etc, just the hum of the motor working. I have had a look in my workshop manual to see how to remove the motor for further investigation but it says that the window needs to be fully closed to do this. Does anyone have an idea on the way forward? Typsey
  8. Hi Chaps, I believe my alternator on a 1995 300TDI disco is not working. How do I test to see if my assumption is true? Many thanks.
  9. How much smoke are we talking about here? I get a little bit, not much mind, but a bit of smoke from both the oil filler cap and the dipstick housing. Should I be worried about this?
  10. Did you fit the head gasket the right way round? Mate of mine didn't and ended up with similar problem.
  11. Hi there, I have had a small starting problem since the start of the cold spell in December. The disco was struggling to start and it eventually killed an old battery that I had inherited when I bought it(6 years old). I changed it for a new one and since then it has started but not with the ease of previous winters. Yesterday I dug the multimeter out and measure the resistance of the glowplugs which turned out fine (no I haven't had them out in a vice to see where they glow). I also checked the voltage going across the circuit and it didn't register anything. This tallies with the lack of assistance seen when I allow the glowplugs to warm up before completing the ingition sequence. I think that they are not getting any voltage, and therefore power, which is the reason for the sluggish starting. Question: what's the fix? Is it a new relay? If so, does any kind sole have the part number? Many thanks in advance. Typsey
  12. I agree with ronnie_rotten. Change your thermostat. Very easy job and well worth it. You will notice the difference in heater output almost immediately. I am sure someone will have written up a guide to the job in the technical archive. If I remember rightly they cost around £5.00 from Paddocks. Typsey
  13. Have a leak somewhere in the brake system. Hearing a slight hissing but not losing fluid. Pressure is down and seems to be gradually getting worse. Haven't been able to source a suitable replacement servo so am thinking about using one of Paddocks repair kits. Has anyone used one? Part no: RTC 5832 http://www.paddockspares.com/pp/DISCOVERY_1/Brakes/Brake_Servo_Repair_Kit.html Any pointers would be good. Many thanks. 300Tdi 1995 Disco 3 Door
  14. About a year ago I fitted a heavy duty full normal height suspension system by Britpart bought from Paddocks. Originally when fitted there was a slight discrepancy between the front and the rear suspension heights (front being higher). Since then the difference has gotten more noticeble and I am now starting to think about rectifying. Question is, how? What is the best solution? What is the cheapest solution? And yes, I will not be buying Britpart again! Typsey
