  1. little bit of advice please, I've looked around and narrowed my problem down to a couple of things. First off my 2004 td5 has developed a wobble on the steering wheel (side to side) noticeable at very low speed, not noticeable when traveling at speed. Jacked up front wheels, driver side no noticeable movement when rocking the wheel, near side has a very slight movement when rocked at 12 and 6 o clock next to nothing at 3 and 9. Do you think this is down to the wheel bearing or as I've just been reading about the 'swivel pin shims /bearings' which i know nothing about. is there a way to check or do i need to strip it all down. thans in advance.
  2. Job done, couldn't get the air intake out (air con pipes in the way) good call on the sticky nut idea. thanks guys.
  3. thanks for the reply, will give it a go
  4. Help/advice please, i've just bought a pair of wing top protectors for my td5, and fitted the r/h side using the ss c'snk nuts and bolts, quite an easy job. looking at the l/h side (passenger) looks a lot more tricky to get the nuts in place, any ideas? is it best to remove anything or fiddle about for hours. any suggestions please. ps. the easy way out would be to rivet them on but really prefer the c'snk bolts.
  5. Sorry to bring this up again, but i have looked around the archives of this and other places and i'm still a bit confused as to which oil i should use. there seems to be a lot of conflicting views as to which is best. it appears the best option quoted always seems to be expensive, as if i'm right it should be changed every 6000m which will be at least twice maybe 3 times in a year and at £35 ish for 4ltr (why has it changed from 5ltr) to me thats a bit steep on top of every thing else. So should i really stick to the top end stuff or can anyone recomend anything else, and does it really matter on the sae 5/30 or can i use 10/40. is there any real problem using castrol gtx 10/40 for example which is around £19 for 5ltr. once again appologies for bringing up this old chestnut ps this is for an 04 defender td5
  6. any advice please. i've owned my 04 90 for just over a year now, no probs. up til now, its just sailed through the mot. the brakes have been working fine until i used them on the snow yesterday for the first time. when i apply the brake on the slippery stuff i get a really bad graunching noise which seems to come from the drivers front side and the brakes are as good as useless. as soon as i'm off the snow/ice the brakes are fine again. the abs and tc lights do their thing on start up and don't come on again so i assume alls ok. back on the slippery stuff again and i get the same horrible prob. any ideas as it doesn't sound to good at all, or am i doing something stupidly wrong. thanks in advance
  7. can anyone help,i'm trying to remove the interior panel off the front door of my defender, the manual does'nt give much info other than saying unclip the the surround from the door knob but it does'nt seem to want to come off (close to breaking it) ive unpopped the studs, door handle and opener no prob. it has central locking could this be diff. to manual locks? thanks
  8. i'm just about to open my doors up to waxoyl them to try and stop the onset of rust on the bottom of the frame which i believe can be a prob. so i'll check the frame while the pannels are off. to remove the pannels is it just a matter of prizing off the clips and removing the opening and closing handles. do i need to remove the locking button it seems to be well fixed in there somehow. they are electric locks on an xs90
  9. hi guy's my first post on here, but have been looking around the forums for some time now and this seems about the best i've finally got the car i've wanted since i was a young lad hence user name. now the proud owner of my 04 defender 90 i'm looking for a workshop manual, is it best to buy the official lr one or are there any other options? thanks.
