  1. no problem so it is mainly the refinement then.....not the engine...... i cannot quite work out why I like driving the defender. we have 2 other perfectly civilised and charismatic cars (new Cooper S and and BMW M3) yet the defender makes me smile at less than half the speed.... just wondered if i dobbed in the M3 and the td5 and got a new defender and put a load of cash in the bank whether i would be smiling even more....hmmmm but then i would be too scared to scratch it of course
  2. have not driven the Puma - is it actually better than the Td5? mine is chipped by J Fearn and also has the straight thro' pipe - sounds like a Lancaster bomber when on full throttle and feels pretty darn quick too - for a defender still gets around 30 mpg and is relatively civilised......so curious to know whayt is better, if anything.... cheers
  3. thanks all - had wheels balanced by Kwikfit and it was a loose wheel!!!! all well now - phew
  4. Shardlow 4X4 very good although labour rate a tad high.....very honest though and knowledgeable and friendly which counts for a lot! Also Aylmer near Potters Bar a good straight bunch.
  5. Just had new springs (Britpart HD) and shocks (Britpart Cellualr Dynamic) fitted to my LR90 (2001 Td5) and it has tightened it up nicely BUT I now have a bad steering wobble at 55 that goes at 60 and returns at 65mph.....any ideas? thanks
  6. In my 1985 V8 hybrid the tank is 12 gal (original V8 tank)!!! Great for a trip to the petrol station and back and then time to go back to fill up again!! Glad I have 30 galls of LPG
  7. Hehe - the progress of a diesel is also "stately" compared to a V8...... Having driven both today I resolved to stay with the V8 - the power, torque and sound just does it for me...and surely they are cheaper to maintain in the long run - more simple? Good luck, whatever case you put to your other half will find you in severe brownie-point debt at the very least and in the divorce court at the worst.
  8. Thanks FF - I went to try out a couple of alternatives today at Shardlow 4X4 (good dealer by the way - honest and seem to actually care!). Drove a chipped Td5 - nice car but just could not get over the sound nor the wait for power to arrive as the turbo spooled up. Came back from that and took a 50th Anniversary out - wonderful ride and sound, very civilised for a Defender and confirmed to me that I prefer the V8 anyday. However I could not imagine me offroading in the 50th - would be gutted to scratch it and that pearlescent paint would be hell to touch in! And you were right (as was my best mate who seems to have an almost psychic ability to diagnose issues from 200 miles away!!) - it was a hose down near the manifold. The drama of the "explosion" was caused by the fact that the water spewed out all over the hot manifold - could not see the car for steam at one point. Sounds like that was the only issue though and my engine has escaped damage -PHEW! So I get it back on Saturday with new hose and also an Optima Yellow Top battery as the one in it turned out to be a duff new one but, just in case there is a drain, Shardlow are fitting an isolator switch for me as well! Great service! Happy again...until it breaks that is! Cheers for the advice!
  9. Hi Tim Good luck - I was interested but called Liveridge before visiting to do a check and they had never come across that reg before but they did know of MRM and were very professional but at the same time pretty damning (in the kind of way that they probably did not want to be if you know what I mean?) Obviously you have been, seen and bought so you will know far better than I as to how good or bad it really is - I just have trust issues with car dealers and always judge the guy selling moreso than the vehicle. The Liveridge guys are very knowledgable and honest with one of the best reputations around so i took their view as gospel and stopped there. In the end I went to Shardlow 4X4 and they have been great - honest guys and good service - cannot fault them really. Got a similar vehicle to you in the end - V8 LPG Hybrid with tons of extras and toys Let me know how you get on and if you are going to be around the South Lincs area PM me and we can meet up! Charles
  10. Hi, I went for Britpart springs with ProComp ES9000 shocks - sits and rides really well. This on a V8 3.9 90 hybrid with a 12k lb winch on the front and 135l of lpg tanks!! Not the lightest vehicle....
  11. having the same debate with myself - i have a V8 90 3.9 hybrid (orig 1985 90 3.5 V8 CSW) which was fine for the 120 miles i ran it and then it overheated and blew apart a hose down near the V of the engine...now I am not sure if I trust it anymore and have been offered a reasonable deal on a newer Td5 - with 71k miles. The V8 is an auto and the Td5 a manual that has been chipped by Rogers and the V8 has had a pro LPG conversion (£1.2k) about a year back. It has only done 4k miles in 3 years (about 70k in total) and has had a full engine rebuild (£1.6k) and recon gearbox (£1k) and BW transfer box in the last 3k miles - along with another £4k of various spends on toys and work. Part of me says that it has had so much spent on it by previsou owners that what else could go wrong but after the overheat I have lost some confidence and worry about any damage that may have been done before the hose blew. That said, a Td5 (6 years old) with 71k miles could be just about to start costing money couldn't it? God knows.....wish I could just NOT WORRY but I want a reliable 90 that will get me to the trail, do the trail and get me back without breaking down. Not interested in competitions...yet.... Any thoughts or views most welcome.....
  12. in fact WE ( yes - i work for DHL - but not for DHL Express who are the transport division) are not known at all as that in the industry - but thanks for the creativity. TNT are known as trash 'n trample, ParcelForce as Parcelfarce, Interlonk ans Interstink, Citylink as 5hittylink and UPS as Utter pile of 5hit though.... I would say that DHL Express are as if not more reliable than the other big carriers - especially when you think of the size of company, there are bound to be more anecdotal negatives - this is an $80bn company after all....
  13. this guy seems to have a reputation - even the mild mannered and very professional guys at Liveredge know of him. He is selling a "Liveridge refurb" at the moment that they know nowt about! best way with folks like him is to stay away and, if you have been done, go see him with a BIG friend and start to talk the language that he might just understand.....
