  2. Cheers for the help guys, The wiring was superb as now i can do away with the switch and put a Carling in stead. Think i shall fix the cable in place so the flap stays open all the time. Many thanks James
  3. Hi I am currently in the process of fitting a LRS Dash to my truck as it has controls of the heater direction and heat in the cab but not for the on/ off. I have removed the dash and this is a thick wire which goes back to the heater matrix and then there are some electrical wires which must operate the 2 speed fan. I was wondering would I be able to just fit a standard on-off-on Carling switch for the fan but what does the wire do at the heater matrix? would i be able to get rid of this or should I keep it. Does anyone know exactly what the wire does which goes to the top of the matrix? i was at first to believe the wires were for the speed control however went to local landy garage today and am now not sure as they wern't either. Any help much appreciated. If i can't find a switch i shal have to cut a slot into the new dash and fit it horizontally above the radio. Dash Below. where you can see the two heater controls on the right of the dash but not the one on the left. Many thanks James
  4. Whitbread do the HedTec one's. Got mine from there, superb delivery and very comfy, Bar a little hot this Sunday at LRS!!! James
  5. well. For once in my life. Thank you very much!!!! I was insured with Adrian flux for my challenge 90 last year when I had policies with the nfu as flux were a lot cheaper but when I came to re-new the NFU more than halved my quote. And on the business of new machines and farmers, Don't most bushiness try to re-new there machines as much as possible when they have had a good year? With the price of machinery these days there many farmers who simply can't afford not to keep buying new machines and trading them in before they become two expensive to repair or before there old machines become worthless that they hen can't get the funds to buy the new kit that is now more and more expensive. Is there any business what wouldn't want to update its machines if it had the ability too? You don't see many hauliers with 15-20 year old machines or a call centre with a 10 year old computer do you!!!! That's just Business. Well, There are a few that think the new range rover is an essential item to the farm however!!!! far more important than a new £250,000 Combine James
  6. Um, if you search the part number on the internet and then put that into the Devon4x4 search bar you shall find it, try searching 'warn circlip' in there search I know this for sure as they delivered 2 to me Yesterday. Or, it is amazing what the power of words are. Just pick up the phone and ring them and they would be able to put some in the post the next day for you. This is the circlip on devon. http://www.devon4x4.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=11672&category_id=-2&keyword=warn+circlip&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=14 James
  7. can't speak from actually use but a friend of mine has the goldfinch TDs with air spool and he also has the 24 volt conversion box David offers and that is superb. when he has the 24v conversion box in it is quicker than my standard 8274 which has a Bow 1 on it. His free spool is air operated and seems to be ok but never bitched for him so can't talk from experience. I know I would happily put it in as my middle. Wether you need the 24v box on it is optional as in 12V it seems to work just as well and if he is ever doing any heavy pulls he leaves it in 12V. I am sure someone shall be along shortly though with some actual experience. James
  8. i use a normal M10 8.8 with a nylock on the end. If you get a flat screwdriver it fits in a treat and you shall be able to do up as tight as you can and then simply remove the screw driver. Easy as and far cheaper than the ali square nuts i seemed to round off every time i used them. James
  9. i have an ex-British army Hitachi WR12DMR 1/2-Inch 12-Volt Ni-Cad Cordless Impact Wrench Is an awesome bit of kit. un does my wheel nuts when batteries are fully charged fine and all the other stuff i ask it do do. James
  10. Hi, I currently have a 1981 range rover axle on my truck and i am converting it from 10 spline to 24. I am going to order some ashcroft Drive flanges and i have a 24 spline diff and also the Left Hand half shaft which is - LH FTC871. Does any one know the part number for the Right hand rear half shaft. They were fitted to Range rover around 1992-94 i believe. If anyone can be of help it would be much appreciated. Many thanks James
  11. Still, when i rocked up with the fastrac we were the nuts and did cause a few heads to turn!!!!
  12. High Hige, Just read your list of cars and thought i would add my input. I was given a freelander 2 GS as a work car along with a few others and we all thought oh dear, reliability however much i loved LR. Had it for over a years and actually nothing went wrong at all and it never went back to the garage, one of the other company cars had an alternator fail when it was about 3 weeks old but once that was fixed all seem to be ok. We did alot of driving in them getting around 35000 miles a year across fields as well as on road being chemical sales men. Whilst working there a coligue had a Honda CRV, nice car however once being in the freelander we would never get into his honda, you sit a little lower, it feels a little cheaper and generally not as comfy as the freelander. Can't comment on the others as no expericen as them. before i had the freelander i had a Audi A3 2.0 DSG which went like **** of the shovel and i thought the i would really miss the power however supprisinly i actually found the freelander had all the power it needed for the car, it pulled away on a slip road as quick as you wanted and i was very pleased. Terrain response was awsome and if you ever wanted some fun just stick it in sand and off she went!!!!! I would say that when i then left the company they started getting the auto's and they were far more comfy than the manual that i had so i would go for on of them. i was a sceptical until having the audi auto but i would always have one now if i could. I now drive a Nassan Navara and it is a typical work vehicle. Uncomfy in comparrison and bloody way to big. And when it breaks down. and that more a case of what is broken rather than when, i am on first name terms the the garage now it is dam expensive, i have just had to fork out £650 for one front wheel bearing!!!! i was like what, i can get one for my landy for £20!!!! just as they are nissan and alot of parts you can't get aftermarket so a rear uj for the prop, £110!!! dam expensive!!! Saw plenty of XC60's on the way back from south of france on sunday and they nearly all overtook me on the auto barns as i was doing top end of nissan navara, which is faster than one thinks!!! All the best and at the end of the day it has to come down to what you feel comfortable in and what is pratical for you as in dealer location and all the rest. James
  13. Morning all, I am currently looking into axle modifications for my challenge truck as its the next step and was wondering what route to go down. I currently have a challenge 90 with range rover 1981 10 spline alxes on it with dual brake lines. I spoke with ashcroft and priced up to convert to 24 spline and its all standard bar the modified stub axles i needed. Had a look at santa's and saw a few running Disco 2 front axle's. Looking on the ashcroft site seems it may be a cheaper route to go for shafts and CV's. so my question is, basically how easy is it to convert this axle to fit my challenge truck. It is based on a range rover chassis however im sure mounts arn't an issue but i was wondering how do people get around the abs issue and what other issue's do i need to look into before deciding. Would it be easier just to change the internal of what i have now. Any help much appreciated, did a quick search but it didn't come up with two much i couldn't see so if its already covered please re-direct me. Happy Christmas James
  14. i used them for some of there dyneema many years ago and to be honest, i wasn't expecting it to be very good however 2 1/2 years later i still have it on the rear and ok i have had to butt splice it once but that was due to my fault of getting it caught on a sharp edge and not the rope. keep it well looked after and it seems to be ok. Now doing more challenges however i am using goodwinch bowrope. just for piece of mind when your hanging off it. James
  15. i run 35" tyres would anyone recommend changin the panhard rod for an adjustable one as i also have a 2" lift or would you think it would be ok? don't notice much on it. Many thanks James
  16. Hi, re-build my 90 a few months ago and i am getting odd vibrations now from the steering. Was running 35" silverstones and was just putting it down to those not being ballanced. I have now fitted some small 205 road biased tyres to try and solve the problem which are ballanced and the issue is: I have no vibrations at all until i reach about 50mph. once here, the steering will go from smooth to a violent vibration to the verge of loosing control until braking and the vehicle is brought back down to about 20 mph. steering wheel moves a good few inches either way. Only done it twice as i am not driving it over that as its so bloody dangerous. I have a new steering dampner on there which is all working fine as no vibrations until i reach 50 so does anyone know any issues i may have? Haven't checked the tracking as garage i took it to said the tyres were to large to fit there macgine as i took it with the 35"s on so may go and get this done. any help much appreciated it is on range rover axles if that makes any difference and is a challenge truck so solid dan bars but wouldn't have thought so. Many thanks James
  17. Many thanks for that nigel. Spoke with ashcoft about changing my range rover axles for defender ones for ease of upgrading. Think i shall be leaving them on now and slowly upgrading. You are a star. James
  18. These are my isolaters. Now have three in there as one for rear winch and easy to access and not much wiring involved. James
  19. not to sure i always fit slidy bit back, keeps it higher out the way of al the **** and then the female end- open end if sacing back also so less likely to be full of mud and rubbish!! and i do have my grommits on!!! James
  20. cheers for the replies I haven't had the transfer box away from the gearbox so hopefully i can put this concern of bolts out of the question. As the front ourput bearing is nackered i am going to just replace the T box i think with a 'good' second hand one and see how we get on!! Thanks for all the replies though. James
  21. Hi, I know that the td5 and the 300tdi both run the lt230 transfer box but my 300tdi one has just given up and i am looking for a new one. don't use the truck enough to warent a new one, about 1000 miles a year and i can find alot more td5 lt230's than 300tdi ones. Would i be able to fit a td5 one as long as the ratio was still 1.41? Many thanks James
  22. Hi, Build my truck up from scratch and now has 300tdi and R380 gearbox and LT230 transfer box. Ever since it has left the shed, (used an old defender as a donar car which all worked ok when came into the shed) there has been an awful wining noise from the gearbox/Tbox. I smashed up a front prop at the weekend at the mission 4x4 and have now noticed that there is alot of movement on the front output shaft. i know there should be some but i can move it about 5mm up and down. The transfer box also took me about 20 mins to get it into low box. wouldn't come out of high to start with and then kept jumping out of low diff.. Then i had a big bang and it went in and stayed in so i competed with it there!!!!! have got it back into high now fine. As for the noise. When you are putting power on there is a horrible wining noise. take power off and the noise goes away until engine brakeing and then there is an even worse noise!!! Is this the front output bearing that has gone or do you think it is more a case of a very warn T/box. or is it something to do with gearbox? that seems all ok and changed gear all ok with no noises or anything. I'm running 35" silverstone tyres. Any help much appreciated. Thanks James
  23. indeed shall be up there camping, not sure if landy is coming yet but i shall be!!! looking forward to it
  24. got a 14 and a 16 and i would actually say the 16 tows better, is slightly newer which may have some reason!!!!! the 14 is on the old heavy duty tyres however an is a true work horse. They are superb. James
  25. Cheers all. Much appreciated, shall try the loctite stuff i think as there are pretty dam good, can spray it in the cab and then remove to dry. Cheers James
