  1. Mods, please delete this question. Was being stupid.
  2. Hi all. 1989 range rover axles on a defender. Quick question. I've rebuilt my front differential. Replaced all bearings etc. Thought I had some Ep 90 oil in garage but it turned out to be 75/ 80 mineral oil. Gl 4 rated. Can I use this until I get some EP90 for it. Not going a long way but just want to get it MOT'd and back on the road.
  3. That's chucked a spanner in the works. Never heard of this, thanks for the info. Honiton hobbit, cheers I've looked at a few d3's and I think I prefer td5. I like simplicity.
  4. Hi, yea I'd heard that the d3 can be an expensive repair when certain items wear out. I'm still tempted though. I guess I'll have to look at some to make my final decision. I'm planning on doing a lot of mileage on my travels and want to get it right without too much messing about.
  5. Hi, I'm currently looking for a new motor to tow a 28 foot caravan around. I'm fancying an 04 plate Td5es but am tied between that and an early D3. I'm slightly afraid of all the electrics on the d3. Has anyone any thoughts on which motor is best to tow with and reliability issues. I've owned a Td5 before and liked it a lot.
  6. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252583887465 Hi, I'm thinking about buying the above as my swivels are pitted. Anyone any experience with them. I see that they are britpart but I can't find any alternative makes. Your thoughts would be appreciated.
  7. I got a full set of stainless nuts, bolts and washers for my ongoing 90 refurb. Bling.
  8. Yea had a look at their site. Not much on there without registering. Thanks . Anyone on here any ideas. I put. Some of the kit on fleabay and it went mad. Watchers and offers flying in. I've taken them off for now to research them properly prior to relisting them later.
  9. Hi. I've just acquired my next project vehicle, a 1967 series 2a. I'm told it was initially an ambulance. It was later converted to a radio vehicle. This is a photo of her loaded up ready for journey home. There are various bits of radio equipment I want to sell but don't know their value. A pole aerial on the rear panel that extends. Two aerial pods on the wings. A radio bulkhead with map lights and fire extinguisher and two radio sets. Can anyone please assist with rough values. I'm clueless. Thanks Max
  10. Hi Chaps, I'm now the proud owner of a 1996 Discovery that's in need of some TLC. it's a Mot failure that I've picked up cheap. Needs new outer sills and some electric issues. One of the back doors wouldn't open so I've removed the lock mechanism and need a new rod that's in this photo Can anyone give me the part number please. I've looked all over and can only find the complete unit for sale. I was Landroverless for six months after selling my hybrid but now back in the game and it feels good, I built a large carport last year and the wife asked why I was using nine by four timbers,, perfect for lifting engines out with the old block and tackle. Anyway your help would be appreciated in solving my current issue. Max
  11. Now a Discovery 1 owner

  12. Also remember that the IVA test fee is 500.00
  13. You have to ask yourself why it's on a q plate. Also why it's on a buy it now for eight grand. If you can answer these questions satisfactorily then it may be worth a look. My truck is on a q plate and insurance comPanies take the mickey with premium costs.
  14. It's not that bad to get a well built vehicle through the I VA test. The test itself is very thorough but common sence dictates that if you take a shed then they will climb all over it They check speedo calibration and measure the wheelbase at various points. All wiring has to be fixed at various distances to the chassis or body. All fluid reservoirs have to be clearly marked as to their contents( I still have some spare stickers that someone on here kindly made for me). If you need to speak to me then pm and I will give you my number.
  15. That's some technical stuff. I won't be making a habit of towing anything in future except for the caravan. I was late for work and he was struggling. Road blocked etc Leave recovery for the experts is my philosophy.
  16. On my way to work this morning I came across an articulated lorry that was stuck in the ice and snow. It was causing mayhem. I asked the driver if he wanted a tow. He smirked and said that won't pull this. Maximus was connected up. First gear and away he went. No problem. The driver couldn't believe it. He then told me his truck weighed just shy of fourty tonnes. I've no doubt that it wouldn't tow it without the assistance of his engine but it still felt good.
  17. I use my iphone loaded with memory map, i have all the trails loaded onto the maps prior to setting off. I have a dash mount for the phone and a car charger. I'd like an ipad and might invest in one when my contract ends in November.
  18. Thanks chaps for all the info. I have thought long and hard about this and have decided to do down the diesel route. I will have sufficient spare bits off the discoveries to run my car for many years to come. I will start the strip down of the discos next week and dry store the bits until February when I will have bought new clutch and cam belts etc. I love my V8 but petrol isnt ever going to get any cheaper is it. I will update this thread with pics as I go on. No doubt you can all keep an eye on me as I do the work and advise when I'm doing the wrong thing.
  19. found this on Steve Parkers site. Will i really need to spend this much on parts for the conversion? http://www.steveparkers.co.uk/conversion_300TDI_to_90-110-LT77.php?PHPSESSID=81543d91f053276c0191b3ba566bbdc4
  20. Flipping heck. Loads of info to think about. Yes I like the like the noise but I see MPG dip even lower if I'm silly so I keep it sensible. I've never checked the cam because it runs ok so thought why fix something that works ok. It does run slightly rich and plugs keep requiring a clean or replacement periodically. I would like to travel to Morocco at some point in the future and this is the reason for thinking diesel. I'm only paying three hundred quid for two discoveries one with a poorly engine but ancillaries are good so think I might be sensible to go that way. Also my truck might be more saleable in the future. So apart from the initial cost of the engine what is the likely requirements to fit it. I've seen new engine mounts and an exhaust kit to convert it into defender friendly fit but these alone came to three hundred quid. Do I need them or will the exhaust clear the chassis from the discovery manifold. I don't want to take the engine out of the discovery, trailer it home and discover it's going to cost alot more to get it to fit. Thanks for all your replies so far. Very helpful.
  21. Thats petrol. No LPG fitted yet. Its consistemtly between 10 and 13 to gallon. Thats my problem....tooo expensive!!!
  22. Thanks for the info. Nearest is guisburn about 20 miles. Could incorporate fill up with weekly asda trip. I've been figuring out a few sums. 70 ish pence per ltr for LPG. Roughly half the cost of petrol. So my weekly commute of 120 miles to work that costs 60 quid would be cut to around 30 straight away. It's doing ten to gallon at moment despite changing all the sensors. If I could get a bit more by fitting megasquirt it might be worth doing. Can anyone tell me a rough estimate for the kit for a 3.5 efi engine. Can it run LPG aswel as petrol.
  23. Thought about gas previously. How difficult is it to install. I live in the sticks and nearest LPG station in 30 miles so I've always talked myself out of it. I've also been told that LPG runs hotter than petrol and eventually damages the engine, I know lots of people have it so it can't be that bad. I'm also wanting to prep my landy for some overlanding in the next few years and thought that diesel would be better. I love my v8 and built the truck thinking I would keep it forever, hence the Q plate but circumstances change. My god I've even thought about selling it completely but wife and kids sobered me up. I've also recently been offered a 1960ish series 109 ex military truck that once featured in LRO for not much money. I was toying with that idea but again money and storage are major issues
