  1. Just found this simple info about CB's
  2. When there is nobody transmitting on a channel all you hear is noise, to get rid of this noise you increase the squelch until it has cut off. However, you will still receive all other stations. If you turn up the squelch even more, distant stations will also be cut out, if you turn it up to maximum only very strong or local stations will be heard.
  3. Being an ex Avionics Engineer in the RAF, I did a small bit regarding communications and from what I can remember the length of an antenna determines the range of frequencies it can receive/transmit You can read some CB stuff from here and here. Having an antenna mounted low down will affect it's ability to provide enough range, up is best. Oh, being whipped in the face by a low down one, hurts. I've got one of these and I can pick up traffic from a long way off further away than those I'm out-n-about with. Most importantly, you need a good earth "Ground Plane" or the CB set wont last long. Hope this helps, Keith.
  4. Now I've finally done about 90% of the build in the back of my 90, I thought it would be a good idea to post my take on storage. I've not gone for the drawer idea, why you ask, having done a drawer build before on a 110 before I found I used a lot more wood and stuff and it weighed more than I liked it to do. Having a 90 with a roof tent, spare wheel carrier, hi-lift, etc. I wanted to reduce the weight. So I gone for a frame idea to hold the Jerry cans and pull out cooker, the rest of the area will be used to hold storage boxes that I can leave at home when I'm not using it for fun stuff. Pictures are in my gallery, under New Builds. (Hopefully it can be seen by anyone)
  5. Hi all, I've just helped a mate of mine out by replacing Petrol with Diesel in his fuel tank. He didn't do it, a mate of his did, the 200Tdi engine started fine but ran not well. It wasn't just a case of having a bit of Petrol in the tank, it had nothing but Petrol, maybe 5liters of it was Diesel when it was topped-up. We drained the tank and put Diesel back in, drained the filter and drained what we could from the pipes. Bled and started it up, it smoked for a while and it seemed to run fine. Couple of questions: 1. Will it do any long term damage? He unfortunately had to drive about 30kms before we managed to changed the fuel around. 2. Did LR design these engines to run on nearly any fuel? I don't think 95 unleaded was planned. I know modern cars don't fair well in this mix-up, do the "old smokies" fair better? Keith.
  6. Hi all, I've managed to obtain the latest price of the locks I fitted; erm €30.00 each Not cheap, suppose a good deterrent isn't. Got me 'old man' to check on availability and he's been told I could get €2.00 off per lock if I ordered 30 or more. Just for info. the one on the back door has a shorter lock barrel and smaller than the rest. Also just in case you can't see it clearly, you can lock the doors when one is inside (when one decides to have a kip locking oneself in and everyone else out )
  7. I've put some pictures into my album, hope they give you some ideas as to how I installed mine.
  8. Hi, Just thought I'd put up some pictures of my version of security I added to my motor after some tea-leaf decided to nick my Laptop, Hand-held GPS and Leather Jacket from the passenger's side door, they had jimmied something into the lock (probably a screwdriver). I got them from a local hardware store, in Spain, they cost about €12 each. Had to do a bit of drilling and fabricating to get them in place. Oh and I have 3 keys, not the one does all. Could have done with those other ones, never mind, at least I've got something extra/better.
  9. Good job I don't have a "new fandangled" motor on my driveway. Just got one of them "old smokies" that seem to last forever. So much for new technologies, causes everyone headaches and costs a lot.
  10. I did read the information on the site and yes it won't stop anyone "playing" with their own car. I know there are skilled dudes out there, but whats wrong with the freedom of choice? Not much choice is there when you have to go on a 100 mile round trip to the dealer when the local "Fred In The Shed" can do the work and is authorized to stamp the book. Having to drive further to have a vehicle maintained or repaired at a greater cost will probably cause a lack of regular servicing, therefor, a possibility of increasing the unsafe vehicles on the roads; not good in my book.
  11. Unacceptable, too right. I've been “playing” with all sorts of different motors (not the new fan dangled ones) for over 20 years. Yea it's a bit of a pain sometimes trying to get the part you need but at least it's cheep or relatively cheep compared to being “riped off” from the Dealer. Plus, how many 'mobile' repairers are going to go out of business? And how's the bloke who knows how to detect that noisy tappet with a stethoscope going to pass on that knowledge to anyone when all your going to be allowed to do is to take your motor to the 'garage' when all they do is plug some computer to it and they say it's a Lambda sensor duff; when it's clearly not? Not right, I've voted. Plus I've told everyone I know.
  12. Hi all, For those of you who consider themselves "the bloke who knows" can any one of ya tell me how you go about tensioning the cam belt if you don't have a angular torque wrench (dial type torque meter) as stated the the Bible. I.e. the bible says to hold a torque loading of 19Nm (for a new belt) while one does the clamp bolt up. The reason for asking is I can't seem to find the right tool for the job, I've got a torque wrench (any self respecting LR owner should have one in their toolkit, plus the box spanner for the hub nuts) but not that 'special' one for this job. Help, pretty please.
  13. I've got a set on my 90, full set bar the shocks; dito with the fitting them to the shocks , had them on for a year now. Had to change the OE ones 'cuse they were shot. I've not really noticed any change in the ride quality except it has reduced the body roll a bit. I've sorta got a roof tent 100% fitted to it, plus a 2in lift kit from Britpart. Used Poly on my 110 back in Saudi Arabia, the Orange ones, and I did give the motor a bit of a hard time in the bondoo, with the temperature hovering around 65degC in the desert; never had a problem with them. Put them on about 3 years before I sold the motor. Used the Red-uns on one of the Rangies I also had in Saudi and found it used to squeek a bit and a tad stiff in the ride, but cornered well. Also used the Blue ones on another Rangie again in Saudi and found it softer than the OE ones. Took the sleeping policemen in it's stride. As far as I can tell, there dosn't seem to be much difference between the Orange Pollies and the Yellow Britpart ones, suppose their the same stiffness. Keith.
  14. Hi Fellas, I'm looking to go myself, got a similar problem. I've got a set of Insa Sahara's (235x85) and I've been looking for a set for a while now, with no joy. Even tried Andorra, which is just up the road, nope. Hopefully a set can be got during the meet! I'm actually based in Toulouse, hopefully I wont be as deaf. The other problem I've got, forgot the info on how to book a place (never mind, found it and sent e-mail); probably too late. Keith.
  15. I'm not in UK, in France, Toulouse to be more precise. Yep, even used my other wheels/tyres combo, no change. Tracking, spot on, even tried either end of the 'book' settings, 0 - 2mm toe-out, nope. Alcohol, reduced consumption during the tests Not much wind around, if at all. etc, etc, tried just about anything I can think of. Can't feel any slack, even took the column off and pushed, pulled, twisted, etc.... nope it's good. Bushes are on the list of things-to-do, now on the top, week-end looks good and my 'best-buy' tool, bushwaka.
  16. Took 'em off, did the twisty, pull and push check. No play. Rubber thingy has no play either.
  17. Yep, did that and all bushes on the rear.
  18. Hi all, I have a D90 of 92 vintage with the 200TDi engine and it's all bog-stock. Don't know if this has been discussed before, I can't find anything that's similar to my problem. Steering is a bit vague, as in when initiating high speed turns when on the motorway, it's steering is very light and direct'ish. But sometimes it seems to have a bit of a dead spot before anything happens, mostly when in mid corners when at speed, around 80-100kmh. (50-70mph for those in Blighty) Driving in a straight line is fine, simple lane changes is fine, going round rounder bouts is fine. But taking bends in the road is weird (50-70mph ain't fast or high speed driving it's normal), it feels like it want to stay on the straight and narrow when you turn the wheel, so you have to give it more input and then have to back off when it does decide to turn. Not very funny when you have to play the see-saw game every time you take bends. I've gone through all the normal problem areas and now I've begun to change bits. Changed all of the rear bushes, most were stuffed. (Had a case of rear wheel steering, fun but not good) New panhard bushes, also stuffed. New swivel bearings, pins and wheel bearings. (Changed on spec.) Steering box is now nipped up to just off of stiff steering, took a while to get right. (No more noticeable play I can see or feel) New steering damper, changed on spec. New shocks all round, were stuffed. (Case of bad maintenance before my ownership) New track rods (one was stuffed, changed rest on spec.) Drop arm ball joint changed, stuffed. Arm is tight as I had to change joint in situ. Both prop shafts changed when gearboxes were replaced. Rear wheel bearings seem to be fine, can't feel any play. Not changed the radius arm bushes, yet. I was wandering if other than doing the radius arms, if there was anything else that would contribute to this weird feeling? Maybe the box has too much play in it for the adjuster to take up? Never had this problem with my other 110 I had before, but this 90 just seems a way bit more nervous on the road, fine in the rough. Keith.
