  1. You guys were spot on, thanks for all the help, here are some images of what had happened, incidentally half of the bell housing nuts were missing and the spigot bush was unhappy ... all replaced. thanks.
  2. out of sheer desperation i popped it back on and its still had it. Gearbox nearly off and clutch kit on its way ...
  3. i popped the slave cylinder off and it looks like the piston had come out and was dangling in the housing, is this probable?
  4. thanks for your help guys really appreciate it ... tomorrow ill check the slave cylinder before i embark on removing the box ... fingers crossed ...
  5. I had just cranked up my L reg 90 defender and was happy rumbling down hill and the clutch felt unusual, when I tried to change down the Clutch pedal went solid and I couldn't get it back into gear, the pedal just wouldn't move. The engine runs and will go into gear as normal without the engine running ... There is clutch fluid in the pot, quite low ... No signs of leakage anywhere ... Pictured is the reservoir (I'm sure you know this) the piston pictured will not push in by the pedal unless I open up the pipe joint and which the pedal goes down but fluid comes out ... I am no mechanic but happy to get my hands dirty and want to know whats wrong, I changed the gearbox and clutch alone about 35,000 miles ago ... Any suggestions or obvious things that could be wrong? I would appreciate your thoughts ... dennis
  6. True! I got one from Bearmach in maidstone and it fitted and works like a dream now, thanks to Les and his legendary instructions. I think I owe him a few pints.
  7. Oh dear i just read your instructions again, first line DOH!
  8. Les are your instructions to fit a steering box the same for a 4 bolt box?
  9. Thanks for that Neil i ima going with the bearmach replacement one i didnt get much joy or love from paddocks.
  10. Thanks Paul thats what i sort of suspected i just need to work out the exchange deals now as Bearmach local to me charge the same price but the £100 on top so it seems that paddocks is £100 cheaper.
  11. I have finally got around to changing the drop arm on my defender and noticed the box is leaking fluid, should I change the steering box for a new one or should I just put the new drop arm on? I am no mechanic but this forum helped me change my first gearbox so ... I just need advice on what I should do. It also looks slightly off centre which is a worry. any advice would help me make a decision. thanks
  12. thanks that is quite helpful. I should have checked all the leads before I bought a new starter motor as the lead that connects to the ?solenoid? was loose and was the intermittent thing.
  13. Hi. I have a defender 200tdi and have had it for 4 years replacing the starter motor twice, both times I could start it with a tow start so my guess was right, however this time with a similar situation although sometimes it starts and sometimes it does not. My question is if it is the alternator and not the starter would the engine try to start or would it just be dead as if the starter had gone? The battery is only 12 months old and is fully charged. thanks dennis
  14. Please dont laugh at me but I am trying my best to find the correct pressure for my tyres when it is in normal driving mode and when I am towing! (Heavy Stuff) I have a 90 defender county with BF Goodrich Tyres at LT 265/ 75 R16. Any Wisdom?
  15. I used the Bosch one and it is a perfect fit, only they forgot to take the exchange one! Does anyone know is it worth having the old one overhauled?
  16. These three photos show how the Joint looked and then cleaned and the state of the bearings, some were dust! I guess we should grease our joints often. Actually my joints need greasing to but ill be buggered if Im attaching that grease gun to my nipple.
  17. ill post some photos of mine later! and you will see that they were not even filled with grease when they were fitted last!!!!!!
  18. I followed the link above and it was an amazing step by step of removing and fitting. I did the job in 2 hours having never done it before I am impressed with myself. Thankyou so much for your help guys! it only cost me £18 for everything.
  19. I dont suppose its too difficult to take them off is it? Ive never done it but I fitted a gearbox 4 months ago so Im pretty handy.
  20. Just looking for some advice people! I have a Budgie under my Defender 90 county and I have wondered and wondered what it was. When I checked the forums out I dutifully checked my propshafts and the rear one is as loose as well..... Its loose. Should I change the whole shaft or get a set of Uj's and fit them? Its a big difference in price but I am thinking about the long run. dennis
  21. Hi people. I have a 90 defender and a Steel Tubed Roof Rack with Ladders (heavy). I know it eats fuel but has anyone noticed a significant difference in their fuel consumption, its just I cant be bothered to take it off! Do you guys remove yours? When I do come to remove it I always find that I need it. dennis
  22. I am hesitant to post here because its like making up a diagnosis for someone's health, it might be wrong. But it sounds like a problem I had last week, mine started by jumping out of gears and then unless I wrestled with the gearstick it wouldn't go in without crunching. I thought it might be clutch problems until in the end it wouldn't stay in 3rd gear so I took a guess and advice. It turned out to need a new gearbox.
  23. I just wanted to CONGRATULATE my self! (ha ha) and really wanted to say a MASSIVE thankyou to all you guys who responded to my original post of "LT77 gearbox would you fit one yourself". I followed the thread that Les Henson posted, the post was by White90 It was an excellent description of what to do which I followed quite easily. So I took out the offending Gearbox along with the exhaust, Transfer box, clutch, all kinds off other stuff and then fitted the new Clutch & Box, IT was well HARD but satisfying. It took me 14 hours to do. Ill post some photos when I can actually move again as I am as stiff as a board. THANKS once again for helping me guys.
  24. Thanks Les, I have took your advice and ordered a box today from Ashcrofts, it arrives next tuesday. Good job really as I was driving home today and it wont stay in third gear at all now. Would you suggest changing the clutch regardless of its condition or should i just use the old one? thanks for your advice and encouragement. dennis
