  1. Yep a 2" lift also works fine. I have extended bump stops, +70mm springs and the gwyn lewis challenge setup. My bump stops never get hit unless the wheels travel vertically up, i.e it bottoms out. What this means is that my extended bump stop is now too short as it was designed for a 2" lift and is therefore 1" too short. The travel is still the same, but is an inch higher to start with and therefore when the wheel is at the top of its articulation, it is an inch lower than on a 2" lift. The correct solution is a 2" lift and a 1" body lift. This way it is only the body going up higher and keeps a little more weight lower down, which means the car's centre of gravity is lower. That is if you need a 3" lift for your tyres.

Some 35" tyres are actually bigger than others. I ran 35" mickey thompsons that measured around 34.5" tall and I am now running simex that are 35 1/4" tall. The tyres width also plays a big part in how high the car needs to be raised etc.

ok cheers as i say i have 35s ,2" lift but forgot to mention 1 1/2" body lift so should be covered, havent used the car much yet so dont no exactly how it behaves. thanks for the info

also i think the disco looks fine. if it works ok and its only looks your basing the extra inch on i wouldnt worry

  2. With a 2" lift, the 265/75 tyres will be fine, with extended arches you could run 34" tyres (possibly 35") but with a 3" lift you could run a true 35" tyre no problem if you had extended arches (as this is what I have) so really there is no reason why you would need to lift it up another inch as really you want to keep the car's centre of gravity as low as possible.

#this maybe a silly question but how would an extra inch make that much difference to the 35" tyre as the bump stop remains in the same place so on hard articulation you will have the same problems as a 2" lift.

only asking because i have 35" tyres, 2" lift and want to if im losing out somewhere

    cheers

  3. Thanks!

Basically the roof and rear/side windows - also, how did you seal up the rear doors?

    Cheers,

    Roger

ok ill take some pics might be a few days, i have to borrow a camera

basically the doors are welded from the inside to secure them then the door gap built over wilth ally welding and body filed, then the rear handles filled with an ally plate, welded and finished.

really the doors still exsist but just not on show, and to cover the inside i made a plate to cover the door and what was left of the quater panel.

the rear window is the orignal window and surrond moved forward and braced down to the floor and side windows are bonded plastic made to fit the left over hole.

most of it was a case of changing things to suit as it progressed

hope this helps as i say sadly no build pics, i expect these would have explaned it better than i can.

  4. That's my thinking for when I do mine next Summer. Do you have any higher-res pics or even some of the build perhaps?

no sadly i didnt take any of the build although i wish i had now, ill see if can get hold of a camera not on a phone and post some more. is there any particular area you want to see?

  5.

Nice looking pickup - I love the whole 'acres of glass' look that you have there - and looks well executed too. Does the top-tailgate lift? How did you do the roof?

    Roger

thanks was trying to keep as bigger field of vision as possible. yeah the tailgate does still work handy if you stuck between two trees  The roof was cut about a foot back from the front, middle section removed, welded back together and an original roof support beam fixed over the seam on the inside.

  6. Hi,

Are there any good green lanes/off road areas around Oxfordshire? I only know of the ridgeway which I have been told has been closed to vehicles?

    Cheers

i would say your best bet of finding them is an os map that way if you get lost looking for them you can find your home and there should be most of them on there

  7. Excellent thanks for all the helpful advice will have to start looking out for/ fabricating some bits and pieces.

    Cheers

P.S. Timmymac yes it is the Woodlands center near Brands as i am very local to there ;)

oh right .yeah not to far away myself havent been there in my range rover but last time i went i took a lada niva with 2" lift , mud terrains and home mad snorkel and it was fine on all the course except the real deep water, dont no if the course has changed but i would say you dont need to go mad on bits till you find out if you like it. there will be plenty to keep you busy. even the car park area if its wet enough ( saw a few people get stuck there at the end off the day ) good luck

  8. i would say for the money you want to pay its got to be second hand or from guardian i have one of the tubular bumpers from guardian and am very pleased with it ,they are a good standard for the price , although it doesnt rap around the edge like the comp version but did envolve trimming the grill to fit. will try to post pics if i can take some.

  9. Hi Tim

Would also search scorpion :( while you are there,, should keep you occupied all evening !!!

oh so its not just me that thinks that there a waste of space. thanks ill have a look at that search

  10. Well I've got a V8 & I've been modifying the dizzy etc so it is as waterproof as I can get it, seems to be doing ok in deep water, I did get a bit of a splutter but that was before I finished modding it. Check out this vid of mine in deep water, mines the green one by the way, there was only two rangies there mine & a blue diesel bobtail.

As regards to the engine, I think its got 120k on it & its just the engine for sale with no bits.

yeah looks good so it can be done it coped fine have found a local engine at a good price but thanks for the help. i think that maybe the diffs should be the first job and dont have the money for both .its one of those decisioins not sure what way to go diesel or v8? but i supose time will tell . nice area you live near where are you from.

    cheers tim

  11. I haven't managed to find any that are local to Kent :( The best I can find (for reputable/recommended companies) are North Off Road (Skipton, North Yorkshire), Whitbread Off Road (Almost on the western coast of Wales) and Performance and Protection (can't remember where they are but their website is www.ppcages.com)

With regards to building your own - as long as you follow the spec and design criteria published by the MSA, you should be fine. There are a couple of handy links pinned to the top in the Tools and Fabrication Forum. Have a read through and see how daunted you feel!!
