  1. Thanks, Think I've sussed it out now Gearchange & Lever ??? LandRover Discovery Series I 1989-1998, Gearbox.pdf
  2. Trouble is:- Discovery LT77 main gear lever has gone all "floppy". Instead of resting at the 3rd 4th gate in the neutral position it now falls all the way over in 5th gear position. There's still resistance to going into reverse from a spring but no guidance at all for selecting 3rd and 4th. She who must be obeyed hates this with a passion. I think the bias spring (springs?) is the culprit. Is this located in the gear selector housing? Anyone know the part numbers? Anyone out there know if this can be accessed without having to drop the transmission. We're talking Discovery 1 here. If it was the 110 I'd pull the floor and have a look. Can it be accessed as easily on a Discovery?
  3. Get a long bit of flat bar& drill a couple of holes to match the bolts sticking out of the flange slip this over the prop shaft bolts and use the bar to prevent the flange turning then you can let your biggest gorilla loose on the M20 nut holding the flange onto the output shaft.
  4. The speedo won't show a thing unless the truck's moving. It picks up drive from the output of the transfer box! Pull the PTO cover & see what the output shaft from the main gearbox is like. Sounds like it's stripped the input gear splines to the transfer box gear, sadly a common fault.
  5. You taking off a Safari tub or a hardtop tub? It's just a case of undoing everything in sight lifting one end and putting a bit of 4x2 under it. You can manage on your own but help makes it eaier
  6. Stick to Land Rover engines in Land Rovers - the end result will be worth more in the long run.
  7. The 1 ton rims have the extra width - 1" on the outside of the rim. 9,.00 will loose steering lock, should be alright with 235's, might even be able to turn the lock stops in a bit and improve the turning circle. used to run 1 ton rims when I trialed a series. wouldn't go for the 9.00's though too tall, 1 tons had a different transfer ratio I think.
  8. You say it disappears with the clutch depressed, are you sure its engine and not transmission, is the noise road speed or engine speed related?
  9. Take a photo of how the brake shoes are fittted. It's pretty difficult to get them on wrong
  10. Well I like my 110 with the 1.222 transfer box not so good for towing though
  11. Check for play in the sliders on the props, check the balancing weights haven't come off
  12. Mine only leaks around the doors having "shrunk" the bulkhead by galvanising it.
  13. A hammer should play no part in the fitting of a UJ. If everything is straight it should squeeze in with a few twists of the vice
  14. I've got 5 second hand ones for sale if you're interested. I'll be going to the surrey auto jumble 14 June with them or drop me a pm if you're interested still. They're all in good condition.
  15. Fuel filter... change it other things to check... is there a small filter on the fuel pickup in the tank, if that gets blocked you won't pick up enough fuel and the lift pump will fail due to sucking against this obstruction. Is the tank breather blocked? Your symptoms are exactly what I suffered and the above fixes sorted it. problem caused by using dirty jerry cans of fuel- -paint flecks blocked up the system a treat.
  16. 190,00 on the 110, & 270,000 miles on the discovery S1 both 200 tdi's
  17. Isn't there a pin that locks the flywheel through the flywheel drain hole as well? Not that I've ever used it when I've done the job.
  18. The power is still there,iIt's just that you can't use it. Had to fit a Disco box to my 110 coming back from Morocco last year when the !.44 box cried enough and spat some of it's teeth out and ran all the bearings! Disco box in the 110 is great but not for towing. Destroyed a GKN on the previous trip, luckily I'd packed the old transfer gears and did a quick change on the roadside near Madrid. My GKN was nothing but trouble for the 3 months I put up with it and I was glad to see the back of it.
  19. Check the stub axle where the seal seals, that can get chewed up too.
  20. Penetrating oil and heat, oh and a good wire brushing. rotating the prop as you pull.
  21. Yep, splendid day out. if a trifle expensive. New gearbox looms, due to the utter destruction of reverse gear
  22. Yes. count me in. I'll put some sensible tyres on this time too. Some slightly gentler punches might be good too.
  23. Yep. splendid day out. Thanks Paul & the organisers. When will there be a repeat visit? I'll be breaking out the "simex" next time.
